Molyneux Wants Over 5 Million Fable III Sales

Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux expects Fable III to be the biggest-seller of the series to date.

I haven't played Fable 1, but I played Fable 2, and I thought it was a good game. Hopefully this one sells well too.

Molyneux states in the article that his 5 million target sales is for the 360 platform alone, discounting PC sales.

To date, worldwide, the first sold 3 million, the 2nd Fable sold 3.5 million.

Fable 3 needs some ridiculous hype to get 5 million in sales. MS will need to ramp up its marketing for its release if they wish to achieve this sales figure.

Even Mass Effect 2 barely edged 1.6 million units sold on 360 alone in the US, by March 31 (from its January 26 release date). That's 3 months, and that's Mass Effect 2, with its heavy marketing campaign and hype.

Take a look at the hype and quality of a game like red dead redemption, and then take a look at fable 3. Now notice the difference. ;)

But we don't always get what we want obviously.

it will come close but i don't think it will hit 5 mil. it will end up somewhere around 4, which is fantastic. i can't wait for this game to come out.

I don't think it will reach 5 million especially on the xbox alone. I guessing around 4.5 million combined xbox and PC sales.

My opinion:

Hype is certainly an imp. factor for Fable III sales.......Then comes the quality of the title as promised by Peter.

It must be better than the 1st two which Im havin still a bit doubt in that. Mass Effect & Bioware has totally destructed the rest of RPG's set by any dev.....

Just look wat happened to FF XIII.....It was good but no where when compared to ME2.. I hope Fable III won't get the same fate as FF XIII.

Considering Fable 2 has already sold 4 million, and is not on PC, i dont see why not

In fact, since Fable 3 will be on PC at some later point in 2011 or 2012, i can easilly see 6 million sales or more

And when it later gets the confirmed Kinect support add on, will go even higher

360 gamers usually buy lot of shooters. I doubt Fable 3 will even reach half that mark. Especially when the second game was a such a disappointment and a complete failure of design.

Fable 2 is one of the best scoring games actually too, aside the 4 million sales

Fable 3 is in amazon top100 preorders constantly too, both versions (special and regular)

I can't say anything about reviews because obviously each gamer has their own opinion and I'm just saying each time I see someone mention Fable 1 or 2 most of the time there will be more people talking about it being a disappointment rather than it being an excellent game. Most of it was hype I'm sure.

Fable 2 was a good game and it seems to get a lot of crap from everybody. Also it is pathetic when you want to see a game fail because you don't like one of the designers.

Looking forward to Fable III so I hope it turns out well.

the funny part is that you mentioned the sales part of my post yet totally ignored the part where i said it got glowing reviews across the board. obviously the majority of reviewers disagree that it was a bad or disappointing game. as far as your "general opinion" comment, i'll leave you with this: the haters are ALWAYS the most vocal. most of the people i've talked to agree that it was a great game. i love the hype excuse...

i agree that peter hypes the hell out of his games but still doesn't stop them from being fun to me and millions of other people. we all have different preferences and opinions on games.

Last time I checked 9.0 > 8.5. Demon's Souls got GOTY here. Fable 2 got G4's GOTY and we all know how credible that is.

The reason it is bashed is because Molyneux hyped the first game to be the god send of RPGs. It turned out to just be a barely above average RPG.

Why should that make any difference? I think they're great games, not the best ever but I wouldn't hold a developer's comments against a game. If you don't think they're great, that's your opinion but no one should bash a game based on a developer's comments.

No, success will depend on what they spent making the game. I imagine some games can't even break even at one million sales. Entirely depends on the game budget and end cost. Unless you mean successful in building a fanbase, taking a loss on the first one, and hoping the second does much better while costing a lot less to make. That makes sense to me.

On topic, wouldn't every dev want their new game to be more successful than their previous games? Kind of goes without saying.

Last time i checked Fable 2 received 23 perfect AAAA scores and 35 above 9.5/10 scores

Demon SOul has nothing on that, sorry, not even close, both are 89% on metacritic, but Fable 2 has far more reviews and praise in the real world

There is 4 million that got fable 2, so i guess only 999.999 would be missing, these will either come from PC version in 2011-2012 or since Fable 3 is much better and uses Kinect will just sell loads more
