A new HD DVD designed to help calibrate HDTVs has hit a problem with the Xbox 360, apparently because the disc manufacturer failed to test it extensively on non-Toshiba players.  It will be the first disc to use an Xbox 360 firmware update to fix an HD DVD playback problem.

Digital Video Essentials, the most comprehensive calibration disc for HD DVD, was released last week.  In the days following, the disc creator's online forums lit up with complaints from owners of the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive, saying the disc would skip and sometimes even crash.

The HD DVD release of Digital Video Essentials was anticipated among videophiles, after countless release date changes made it the most delayed title for the hi-def format.

A spokesperson for DVD International, the publisher of the disc, wrote, "As many of you have seen, 'Digital Video Essentials' HD DVD experiences severe playback issues on Xbox 360 HD DVD add on players. All other players have been tested extensively in their current firmware build. All Toshiba players

Sounds like it's more of a problem with DVD International than with the 360 HD-DVD add-on.

The Legendary Halo 3 box comes with it's own 360 audio video calibration software, so I've no need for Digital Video Essentials.

You know Toshiba helped co-design the 360 HD-DVD add-on?

Good thing alot of 360 owners don't care for HD movie playback. As you can see from the discounted units found in Sam's clubs for $72.

Not like you can't just buy the DVD version and calibrate your TV that way.

P.S.

This is a games forum. So if your post gets locked... Don't ask why.

True videophiles that were looking forward to this callibration disk would never use the HD-DVD add-on to watch HD-DVD movies nor the PS3 to watch BR movies. That kind of people use dedicated players...

I was going to get it until I learned that Bungie is including an AV calibration disk in the Legendary edition of Halo 3.

I don't know if this is MS fault...but sometimes it makes me think does Microsoft even have a QA department?

It's not surprising that a calibration disc might cause problems with some players.  It's going to stress the system more than a movie would, that's kind of its job.  Firmware updateable consumer electronics FTW.

lol ;) oh god only german could try spinning this, so a hddvd calibration disc not a movie wont work right on the hd dvd addon and it will be fixed with a firmware update? lets get this straight a calibration disc something really only videophiles use and most will have net access, wont work right on the hddvd 360 addon and the problem can be fixed and will by a firmware update? something that most if not all those that want to use this will be able to get? lol
