Is it true that the more variety a games color palette has, the lower the performance is?

If thats the case KZ2 should run at 120 fps

Not that it would matter anyways if it did.
On topic, I don't think so. Super Mario Galaxy 2 runs like a dream.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 runs at a constant 60 FPS. So I don't think it is true that more colors reduces Framerate. Also most of Nintendo's games are at 60 FPS.
That is a lot of games that are at 60 FPS that have a lot of colors.

Thats because they running at Standard Defintion at the most, it wouldnt be hard to get 60FPS with any Nintendo game right now, next generation might be different though, as the Wii U wont have hardware from 1999 and might have games that are actually pretty graphically impressive.Depends what you mean. If you mean if more colorful games run worse that's a no but if you mean higher color bit-depth then yes. However the established color bit-depth today is 32-bit color and going past this is pretty senseless. Of course when we go lower things start to look uglier (for example 16-bit color is much worse).
Color does not slow down the framerate, what it does is show flaws in the lighting system.
Think of it like this. If you have a piece of neon green paper and you hold it near a window you can see the green light reflected onto your hand (or anythign else around it). This is really difficult to do with lighting in a game, and without these little subtleties the light engine can look awful. So if a dev makes a game that is mostly neutral colors like gray and brown, they dont need their lighting engine to be as precise because you are only reflecting white light anyway.
If you have a good lighting engine, more color can slow it down. Mario Galaxy doesnt have a very advanced lighting engine so it doesnt get affected byt the large amount of color.
You can make a game look better by making it monotone simply because you wont notice that colors arent being reflected properly. Gears has a great looking lighting system, but if you added as much color as something like SMG2 you'd notice that it looks really awful, or it would run much slower.
More colour in games demands more appropriate lighting (radiosity) for it to not look flimsy as colours indirectly bleed lighting off its surfaces. Having less colour a la Gears of War allows the game to ignore that feature.
Or so I've heard.
Maybe teuf could fill us in with some wisdom.

How does it not matter if a game runs at 120 fps? The difference may not be as big as 30 to 60 but it's still pretty noticable. The hardware is rendering millions of pixels and setting a colour to each one. It makes no difference what colour each pixel is.

Thank you fpr pointing that out. it's so true. the Prime series especially runs like greased lightning. It should be an example for all other studios to follow.
Also other games to look at on this subject would be Sonic Colors and de Blob 1 & 2.
