Poll Most accurate portrayal of a foreign country / culture in a game / game series? (9 votes)

STALKER series 22%
Metro series 22%
Max Payne 3 33%
Assassin's Creed series 11%
Sleeping Dogs 0%
Yakuza series 11%

Only this generation counts. By foreign, I mean generally not an English-speaking country. The cultural component must also be a very integral part of the game and it of course cannot take place in the future, so no Deus Ex: HR allowed. If I missed something very relevant, please feel free to suggest amends. Anyway, my knowledge of Japanese games is limited, especially the more realistic ones, because most of them are heavily fictionalized and have fantasy settings and there are very few I'm aware of that would qualify here...

Duke Nukem Forever portrays Americans exactly as Europeans think of them.

Does that count?

As an expert on Roman culture, Sleeping Dogs portrays it quite well.

I have no idea, as I have not been in most of the cultures. I found Max Payne 3 to be convincing to what was in my head though if that counts?

Max Payne 3 did it extremely well, I must say, I agree.

Uncharted 2 and Cursed Mountain really represented Tibetan Buddhism quite well. The latter very much so.

Blyadj!, I just contradicted myself, but I don't know any way to edit the thread anyway. I should have said, it simply cannot take place in a distant future and that's it.

Damn, completely forgot about that game... despite the clunky gameplay and dated visuals, it had plenty of charm, great atmosphere and interesting story.

Also, about UC2, are Yeti-men that take 20,000 bullets to go down while making you argue with a TV a common theme in Buddhism? :P

-Max Payne 3, a ton of the dialogue was even voiced in Brazilian without subtitles, really nailed that feeling of Max being an estranged white guy

-Spec Ops: The Line, it does a very good job of depicting a post-apocalyptic Dubai

-Sleeping Dogs, I kind of resisted putting this up here because I feel a lot of the dialogue is kind of cliched, like you're watching some Chinese-American kung-fu movie, but I'd say it's the most accurate depiction of a modern Asian city in a recent game

All I can really think of. Developers really should expand their horizons beyond the Western world.

It does and it does it really well. It did it so well that I'm 100% convinced Galatians were modelled on real life football club Corinthians. That and a crapload of other things besides football.

I found it funny how in Splinter Cell: Blacklist in some levels, the non-english speaking guards are swearing haha. Got to say though that I can't really think of any games, though.

Left me with the impression that it did a poor portrayal of São Paulo specifically. It mishmashed a lot things (ripped off from several movies), thinking that Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, even in it's geography and climate, criminal and police life are about the same.

Yes, sometimes they even say "sukinsyn" which is assumed Russian in game but it's also used in Poland (my country).

I heard American levels in Modern Warfare 2 is pretty accurate depiction of Detroit when it's not all crazy and hectic.
