its known as FADE and Arma 2 uses it. What it does is it slowly corrupts the game, making the guns impossible to fire, creating all sorts of bugs, and even turning you into a segul (yes its what you think it is)

But as clever as it is, its also highly problematic, because a lot of misinformation is being spread about the game as a result of those who play the pirated copy of the game, since it seems not a single one of them actually knows about this copy protection.

very few people know about it, because it doesnt actually come into effect until you play for a little bit, and so as a result there are a lot of people that actually think the game is broken.

There are a lot of people complaining on the forum about how they cant shoot guns accuratly past 100meters for example.

That is by far the best DRM I've heard of since STEAM.

Please we need more FADE.

Then you haven't heard about OnLive I presume? FADE is surely possible to circumvent but OnLive on the other hand is undoubtedly impossible to crack We need OnLive

Spiro the dragon had similar protection. Actually, it had quite a few built in but one feature was if it was cracked a certain way, the pirate would think he had a working game because it ran, but certain gems weren't included that allowed you to progress.

The one you posted sounds fantastic though!

there are such thing as cracked steam accounts.... i wouldn't doubt they'll find a way to get cracked onlive accounts, at least for a bit.

The thing with circumventing the account stuff is that you can't play on official servers. And even if you do get on there, you won't be there long.

EA does this, too. In Mirror's Edge, you were stripped of your ability to run after like level 3 or something. You could only walk.

Yeah OFP and ArmA1 used it. Happened to me with ArmA1, as I was too impaitent to wait a few months for the retail release, and my ukranian version bugged out. Though yeah ArmA1 anyway - the final retail build was... well still a pretty damn buggy. Though yes, most of the poor comments about ArmA2 - nameley bugs seem asthough they are primarily due to FADE in the German version that is being downloaded. Quite frankly i'd rather wait until the 19th and pick it up at retail.

cool, how many people do i have to frag to get one!, on topic, i thought securerom was pretty bad, but this FADE thing sounds funny, anything that stops software piracy is a win, but stopping it and taking the utter **** out of them is double win

Maybe, but if the code is signed and filled with checks and balances and checks on the checks (IOW, you booby-trap the program file--possibly even encrypt pieces of it), you'll give the pirates a headache. Not only that, since the protection is delayed-reaction, it's hard to tell whether or not your tinkering works until you've played it for a while, giving you more time.

Meh i hope they won't make it impossible to pirate or less people will be able to enjoy the games.

Well that's a good way to stop piracy in a way. I guess that explains the bad feedback I've been getting from the game. But those are some heavy ass bugs.

Its not a new idea, in 90s it was quite often, I think BlueByte did it first in Settlers 2 or 3

Yep, it was in Settlers 3 (Siedler where I live).
