My pick would have to be Fire Emblem. One of the best SRPG series ever made(IMO), yet when people talk about Nintendo franchises, its all Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc.

Ultima. I've only seen a handful of people who have mentioned the games, and yet it's a great, and very influential series. If it wasn't for the Ultima series, the RPG genre would not be the way it is today.Hungry_Homer111I agree, and if it wasn't for Ultima Underworld: Stygian Abyss, there would be no System Shock, nor Elder Scrolls, nor Deus Ex.

TBH, the only things I've heard about Ultima were from Yahtzee Croshaw... And they weren't good. Its a WRPG, right?

Before I even clicked on this thread I said "Fire Emblem".
I totally agree with you.

The series, starting with Akalabeth (unoficially Ultima 0), went through certain developments in its combat system and other elements in the games. Early games helped to mold the genre as a whole. Early games helped to set up the basics, from the first-person dungeon crawling gameplay of Akalabeth, to the shift in focus to an over-world in Ultima 1. Ultima II didn't really play with the combat system or other aspects of the game as much as other games in the others in the series, but played with the idea of traveling between different times and worlds. Ultima III - V had a combat system similar to strategy what strategy RPGs. Ultima IV was the first game to do something very different from the usual "destroy the ultimate evil" storyline of early RPGs: It had you trying to live by eight different virtues in order to become the "Avatar," an ultimate hero with the traits that a hero should have. Ultima V was the first game in the series to incorperate a somewhat realistic day/night schedule, and also had the towns change depending on the time in the game. Its story delt with a corrupt government that you needed to overthrow, which was unique for the time it was made. Ultima VI was the first time that the series didn't have different maps at different areas (seemlessly transitioning between the overworld, towns, and dungeons). The combat was similar to previous games, but again, it didn't change views for the battles. It still used the It had a unique story, having you trying to stop a war between the humans and gargoyles, which would be caused by a misunderstanding. Ultima VII was no longer turn based. The game was controlled completely with the mouse. You didn't directly control the combat, only turned your character (and party) to a combat mode when there was an enemy nearby, leaving you to control the items that you use durring battle, such as magic spells (for the first time in the series), healing items, and other things. It included a lot of other upgrades to the series as well, big or small, which helped to work the early form of the WRPG. VIII and IX both took things even further into the WRPG. And you can't forget Ultima Online, which was one of the earliest MMORPGs. And that's not even to mention about the spin-off games, Ultima Underworld 1 + 2, and Worlds of Ultima 1 + 2. I don't really know too much about those unfortunately, but I do know, like Salt_The_Fries said, the Ultima Underworld games also had an influence of the WRPG genre. Please Log In to post.
