Which platform (from any generation) you think was the most underrated?

For me, I think it's the Commodore Amiga. Reason being It's a 1985 technology (at the time where Nintendo had NES) but with a technology that was superior to SNES, Genesis and PC (graphics, sound, & processing power) and multiplats that it shared with those platforms showcased that superiority big time.

Definately the Amiga. Those floppy boot up sounds meant that something good was about to begin.

It's been received like it was Hiroshima pretty much. The platform will only improve from here on. Seems like likely candidate at least.

It was a great computer for the time. Heck. The Newtek Demoreel 1 demo came in two 880k floppies. The whole demo is a bit less than 1.76 MB.

I think this is the best demo showcasing Amiga (mind you, it's an 85 hardware that predates SNES).

@nyadc: So many people have looked back at the Dreamcast as an underrated console that it has become a bit overrated if anything.

Either the Saturn for it's myriad of sh'mups and other gems or the Gamecube.

BTW I don't think the Dreamcast meets the criteria. I'm met very few gamers who didn't love it.

Atari Lynx

Released in 1989, it's tech was light years past Gameboy. Full fledged 16-bit handheld with a backlit LCD color display, hardware sprite scaling/rotation, vector processing. Only a handful of worthwhile games, but I still think it never got a fair shake..

Notable Lynx games:

Steel Talon (used colored polygons)

Stun Runner (pseudo 3D future racer)

Blue Lightning (stunning jet shooter)

Hydra (good arcade conversion)

Batman

Turbo Sub

Pit-Fighter (most accurate 16-bit version)

Ninja Gaiden (best 16-bit arcade conversion)

Yes (although compared to the gen it came out where it was the most despised machine compared to it's competition, it's getting more love than both the Wii and Wii U).

I'll go Intellivision. At the time it released Atari had stranglehold on the home market when the Intellivision was more powerful but couldn't get too many popular arcade games at the time...

Yeah Gamecube definitely comes to mind... but I'd probably go with the original Xbox. Had a lot of hate (especially from my friends who all had PS2s), but I loved it.

This is a hard one for me, but i might have to go with Dreamcast, was think Gamecube, but Dreamcast had some features that were very underrated. Dreamcast had like Keyboard, VMUs, Mic, Online, great sport games, and a very diverse library. I feel if people had waited it out and givin Dreamcast more time, i feel Sega underestimated it.

Lol so it dominated for only a year and a half :P

But yeah, the first Xbox goes under everyone's radar. I mean, come on, this was the generation in which Sega left the hardware business and Sony was killing it with the PS2. How Microsoft broke into the industry is still legendary, especially when the 360 went toe-to-toe with the PSTriple.

Same deal for me in Jr. High. There was a kid who said the GC couldn't do graphics the PS2 could. Dead. Fucking. Serious.

^^^ The PS2 has graphically superior games than the gamecube. Fact. Just because gamecube was more powerful on paper does not mean it was more powerful in the real world.

Nothing on gamecube is better looking than MGS3, Gran Turismo 4, or God of War 2. And nothing on Gamecube was as huge as GTA SA.

Stop pushing the myth that gamecube was more powerful.

Also stop pushing the myth that the wii is more powerful than xbox. Nothing on wii was better looking than Ninja Gaiden Black or Conker.

Is the Dreamcast really "underrated?"

From what I've seen, whenever the Dreamcast is brought up it gets nothing but love and praise.

You could actually say that about any console. Nonetheless if your console doesn't sell...it's under rated I think. Hell SEGA went out of the hardware business because it didn't sell. Too many people waited to get the PS2. I think that qualifies as under rated. On a gaming forum you will undoubtedly run into SEGA fans. But in the grand scheme of things.....SEGA and their consoles were under rated. The Saturn was as well. Genesis not so much. Only one they had that wasn't.
