PC
Alan Wake
Publisher: Microsoft Developer: Remedy Entertainment Release Date: TBA, still Also on:360
What is it? Psychological horror from the folks who brought you Max Payne's twisted dream sequences (and, y'know, the rest of Max Payne, too).
Why should I care? We're pretty intrigued by the lighting-based gameplay, with light-hating enemies that essentially turn your flashlight into a weapon. And it doesn't hurt that the game looks damn gorgeous.
What's the prognosis? Well, if any of this sounds familiar, it's because the game was on our most-wanted list for 2007 too. We're still excited, but the delay, the lack of new info, and the fact that the developers keep talking about releasing the game "when it's done" have us even less confident it'll be out this year.

Borderlands
Publisher: 2K Games Developer: Gearbox Software Release Date: Q4 Also On:360, PS3
What is it? It's a first-person shooter! It's a role-playing game! It's two, two, two games in one! Well, sort of.
Why should I care? Gearbox is aiming for a multiplayer focus with this post-apocalyptic shooter, with four-way co-op and lots of community features. But the real hook is the RPG-like structure, which sends players out into the wilderness to complete quests, and offers ever-more-valuable loot for completion. By allowing deep customization of characters, vehicles, and weapons, the game could approach MMORPG-like levels of addiction.
What's the prognosis? Solid. The randomly generated environments and gear are giving us a Diablo vibe, which is just fine by us.

Demigod
Publisher: Gas Powered Games Developer: Gas Powered Games Release Date: TBA
What is it? An RPG-themed real-time strategy from the studio responsible for Supreme Commander and Dungeon Siege. Perhaps you've heard of those?
Why should I care? Gas Powered Games is aiming for a true hybrid game, offering both in-depth strategy for fans of RTS micromanagement and hack-n-slash frenzy for anyone interested in a more visceral experience. This so-called "strategic fighting game" will offer a vastly different experience depending on which of the main characters (those aforementioned Demigods) you choose.
What's the prognosis? We're optimistic. You can't argue with creative director Chris Taylor's RTS pedigree (he was the project leader for the excellent Total Annihilation, in addition to the games mentioned above). But balance is going to be a key issue here; with such a disparity of playing ****, it's gonna have to be just right.

Dragon Age
Publisher: Electronic Arts Developer: BioWare Release Date: TBA
What is it? A medieval-themed RPG that Bioware has described as "the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate." Oh Bioware, you do know how to push our buttons.
Why should I care? You mean, aside from the fact that the folks behind it are calling it the successor to one of the greatest PC RPGs ever made? How about the fact that the game is aiming for a grittier, more realistic approach to medieval fantasy? Or how about being to play through your character's own back story as a sort of prequel to the main story? Or how about your battles taking place in cinematic, painstakingly animated -- almost choreographed -- **** If none of that grabs you, well, you have no soul.
What's the prognosis? Doubting BioWare's RPG cred is like doubting the sun will come up tomorrow. Our only concern now is the fact that the game didn't make it out last year. But we'll take late over rushed any day.

Fallout 3
Publisher: Bethesda Developer: Bethesda Release Date: Fall Also On:360, PS3
What is it? The sequel to one of the most innovative and highly regarded RPG franchises on the PC. With a decade having elapsed since the last real Fallout game (Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel are dead to us), it's also a pretty dramatic re-imagining of the Fallout formula.
Why should I care?Fallout and Fallout 2 were so exceptional that they still enjoy a large, enthusiastic fan base today. But Fallout 3's technological lineage is just as solid, since it's using a modified version of the Oblivion engine.
What's the prognosis? We're looking forward to exploring a ruined Washington, D.C., and blasting away at mutants in gory detail. We're also curious how the game will manage to balance its action and RPG elements; Bethesda is aiming for a stat-based system that can also work for run-n-gun players. That could prove to be a delicate balance.
Left 4 Dead
Publisher: Valve Developer: Turtle Rock Studios Release Date: Q3 Also On:360
What is it? A tender love story that portrays the heart-wrenching saga of the formerly deceased, and the passion they have for your luscious brains.
Why should I care? Because you can team up with other player-controlled characters and blast the unliving hell out of hordes of slavering, fast-moving zombies, online. And because these zombies are designed by the team who brought you Counter-Strike's clever bots.
What's the prognosis? This one's already been delayed a bit, so there's that to consider. But if the designers can deliver the kind of novel, ever-changing online play they're aiming for, sign us up. We're especially looking forward to playing as some of the special-****Infected characters. Oh was that your brain we were just feasting on? Ever so sorry.

Rage
Publisher: id Software Developer: id Software Release Date: TBA Also On:360, PS3
What is it? Would it shock you to learn id is crafting a first-person shooter? Probably not. But what if we told you it's also a driving game, complete with vehicles you can upgrade using loot earned on the road? Yes, this is the same studio that made Doom. It's a departure.
Why should I care? Not only are the designers adding driving to the successful FPS formula, they're also throwing in some free-roaming adventure elements. In one interview id gave the example of driving around a huge, open world and hopping out of your vehicle to explore caverns in FPS ****
What's the prognosis? We've seen very little of the actual game, so this is certainly one that could slip to next year. But it's nice to see id putting all that FPS experience to work in a slightly different context.

Spore
Publisher: Electronic Arts Developer: Maxis Release Date: Spring Also On:Wii, DS, Mac
What is it? Hey look, another game that slipped into '08! But from what we've seen of Will Wright's staggeringly large-scale god-game (you could call it SimEverything), we're willing to wait.
Why should I care? The idea of evolving a character from single-celled organism to galaxy-dominating civilization is almost absurdly ambitious. But what's really absurd is the fact that, from everything we've seen so far, it all seems to be very user-friendly and sensible. And the idea of populating each player's world with creatures from other players' games is brilliant -- Wright once described the game as "massively single-player," which just goes to show that he's a guy who thinks outside the box.
What's the prognosis? Spore still looks great, delays and all. Just please bring it out already!

StarCraft II
Publisher: Activision Blizzard [??] Developer: Blizzard Entertainment Release Date: TBA
What is it? It's the sequel to one of the most popular online games of all time. StarCraft II will feature the return of Protoss, Terran, and Zerg races, but look for greater differences between the three races -- as well as a healthy selection of new units, and new tactics for the returning units.
Why should I care?StarCraft's mastery of real-time strategy rocketed it to the top of the charts, and it still enjoys a mind-boggling success online, especially in Korea, where it's not unusual to find multiplayer matches on television. There's no reason to doubt Blizzard's ability to deliver another compelling RTS experience.
What's the prognosis? Korea will explode. But we're not sure when -- regarding a release date, Blizzard says, "We will take as much time as needed to ensure the game is as fun, balanced, and polished as possible."

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
Publisher: Activision Blizzard Developer: Blizzard Entertainment Release Date: TBA
What is it? There's this game called World of Warcraft, OK? It's kind of a big deal. Lots of people play it. This expansion offers more stuff for those people to do, more places for them to go, more creatures to bash on, and more loot to collect.
Why should I care? If you haven't played WoW, you probably don't care; this one is strictly for the heavy-duty players. It bumps the level cap to 80, the profession level cap to 450, and adds a new Hero ****(the Death Knight) and profession (Inscription). You'll also find siege weapons for player-versus-player and, well, a whole damn lot of new stuff to obsessively collect, kill, or explore.
What's the prognosis? Would it even be possible to go wrong with a WoW expansion at this point? Theoretically, perhaps. But Blizzard's well aware that flubbing this would make around 10 million subscribers very, very angry.
