MotorStorm Downloadable Content Impressions
We got a first look at some of the new content heading our way during our recent visit to Evolution Studios.
By Guy Cocker, GameSpot UK

MotorStorm DLC See the new Eliminator mode in action.

It's fair to say that after it was unveiled at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2005, MotorStorm was one of the most anticipated titles for Sony's PlayStation 3. The end result didn't quite live up to our high expectations, but some of the criticisms leveled at the game appear to be addressed by a series of downloads that are due for release in the coming months. With new multiplayer modes and new tracks already nearing completion, we made the journey to Evolution Studios' headquarters in the north of England to become the first in world to see some of this new content in action.

Many of the negative points made about MotorStorm revolved around the game's multiplayer mode, which lacked variety beyond the single-race mode. While that in itself was fun enough, and the game was more than capable of allowing 12 players from across the world to hit the dirt, it lacked the depth of the majority of its contemporaries. While split-screen multiplayer remains off the cards because of technical issues, Evolution plans to appease the online community with a number of new modes, two of which we saw on our visit. The eliminator mode should be familiar to players of such games as Burnout Revenge, where the car in last position is forced to retire at periodic intervals. The tried-and-tested time trial mode will also be making an appearance.

The Evolution offices made a perfect environment to see these new modes in action, and the design team wasted no time in booting up nine PlayStation 3s over their local network to demonstrate the fruits of their labour. The elimination mode works by retiring the person in last position. So every 30 seconds, someone was removed from the race. It's up to the host to decide this exact time period, as well as the other match parameters, but 30 seconds seemed like a decent amount of time to produce the necessary frenzy at the back of the field. Once eliminated, players can view the current last-place competitor until the end of the race, while those still in the race can dish out taunts via voice communication. As with the single-race mode, only the winner is given points that count toward the winner's online ranking, but it already looks as though this will become a popular alternative to straight races.

Meanwhile, the time trial mode looks as though it will become a surefire way of sorting the wheat from the chaff when it comes to online competitions. The game gives you the chance to prove your mettle on any of the courses and in any of the vehicles while ghost cars record your performance every step of the way. Once completed, you can compare your times to those of the best around the world and upload the ghost details if you're in the top 100. It's fairly simple stuff in the grand scheme of things, but hopefully the time trial mode will combine with the eliminator mode to extend the appeal of the multiplayer offering. Evolution is still tweaking both game modes, but the developer hopes that people will be able to get their hands on both downloads in the next couple of months. No price has been announced formally for either release, but it is very likely that there will be some charge involved. There were some strong hints that the time trial mode may be offered as a free download, but we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed until an official announcement is made.

The final piece of downloadable content unveiled during our visit was the new Coyote Revenge track, which will be the first new circuit added to the original set of eight tracks. While Coyote Revenge is a reversed version of the first Coyote track, which was the first track designed for the game, it has been updated with some subtle upgrades. The team believes that even masters of the original Coyote will have a hard time navigating the reversed track. To make sure of this, the team dropped in a new turn at the beginning of the course, as well as added in more festival details, such as caravans, hot air balloons, and even a giant coyote skeleton in the middle. The team also changed some of the mud and dirt to balance it out for different vehicles, and the thin, winding roads promise to pose quite a challenge for multiplayer races.

Clearly, much of this new downloadable content offers much-needed longevity to the original release, so the only downside is the likelihood that we will have to pay for it once it hits the PlayStation store. The new eliminator and time trial modes look likely to match the original race mode in terms of popularity, while the new Coyote Revenge track will hopefully pave the way for some completely new tracks in the future. The game is set for release alongside the console in Europe on March 23. We'll be sure to keep you updated on any developments with this new downloadable content.

how these bastards even DARE to charge for new content for a game that is clearly INCOMPLETE in so many obvious ways absolutely baffles me.  No splitscreen.  No hint of addressing the obvious problems with the online play.  One weak additional race track that's nothing more than a revised old track.  #@#$&#$!  evolution studios.

point is, the game is so incomplete they should go out of their way to make as much free as they possibly can.

My guess, is that the new modes will be free. And at some point, one track will be free. Everything else down the road - they'll charge for. But anything that's going to drastrically effect the multiplayer (the modes), they'll keep free.

this game is incomplete. that's the difference. I have no problem with games that have been fleshed out bringing things that are clearly EXTRA FEATURES and having to pay for some of them...but a lot of this DLC is stuff that should have been there in the first place.

:P but yea, anyone who has played this game for a significant amount of time knows that this game is dreadfully lacking POLISH and the basic things you really take for granted in games. I might make another thread with my issues with the game. no owner of the game could disagree with those things.

Yes I have motorstorm, haven't been playing much online, mostly for the reasons talked about in this thread. although the online is incomplete, it can still be played without the DLC

well...at a basic level, I can't disagree with that. but as it stands, the game shouldn't have been released for us to have to issue all these apologies for it.

...and for most 360 games that got DLC, it was clearly an add-on to a complete package. this game is not a complete package, so it seems outrageous that they'd charge for features that would make it look more like a full package. it's like they sold us a body with a torso, 2 arms and a foot. and now they might charge us for the 2 missing legs, the 1 foot and the head. :| that's why I see this differently. the only 360 DLC that I ever had a problem with was the GRAW Chapter 2 add-on. and that was because of the price and how it cut the number of people you could play with online in half.

I completely agree with you. From what I've heard about Motorstorm, good game, not enough staying power.

I agree that the new tracks are just extra things that should've been in the final game. 8 tracks just isn't going to last very long no matter how you look at it and making people pay more for additional tracks later on when you've got so few to start with is just wrong.

I just wish they would make a few additions to the offline side of things such as splitscreen multiplayer and a few more single player modes. Sure, the online experience is important to me, but I have to have some offline stuff to keep me entertained when I just want to practice by myself.

agreed. maybe the outcry will be loud enough that they'll offer this stuff free. but then again, the way PSN is set up may make it financially difficult for them to do so. I feel like their between a rock and a hard place. I have to believe Sony forced them to get this game out. now they have to figure out how to support an incomplete product without losing more money. tough proposition.

The PS3 online is free. This is just additional content to a game.. Lemmings didnt complain when they had to buy additional content to any other game.

very few 360 games launched this incomplete. fewer still demanded we pay for content to enhance the game. but if you would like to counter the point, feel free to point out the list of 360 games that came out that were incomplete...tell us HOW they were incomplete...and tell us how the DLC (which must be paid for) made the games complete. we'll wait. don't worry. :|

It's content that should have been included from the get go. And the 360 community complained bitterly about some of the downloadable content that they were charged for.

I never said that you said it was impossible, I said your making it sound like its impossible. What this? I'm a cow now just because I didn't come in this thread to bash the PS3 and/or MotorstormChopperDave1
Whether or not I made it "sound" like its impossible to play is subjective and idiotic. Why would I try to make it sound like its impossible to play online when it clearly isn't? :| And, yes, you're a cow.

What problems is Motorstorm having online? I own the game, but I haven't tried out the online portion yet because I wanted to unlock some vehicles and get used to some courses first... but, yeah, what problems are there?

Pretty lame move but i'm not surprised.  Was it not Sony themselves that wanted a bare bones GT game with over $200 of DL content?

I thought cows said MS is milking thru the marketplace....Motorstorm came out a few days ago and they are talking about DLC you have to pay for. Atleast, on the 360 and Wii, I don't need a credit card to buy those things (my student loans are killing my credit :( ) I'm still waiting for the Playstation Card.

shungokustasu, it's not just you. I posted my lists of complaints in another forum. I might bring them here. 11 points that nobody can disagree with, most of which are issues online.Dreams-Visions
Could you post link to them? 1 I don't like is the fad out between chat and the music. Motostorm has a nice soundtrack by the way. Me my friend be busting a flo on the intro song to the game.
