http://www.tested.com/news/rumor-microsoft-launching-xbox-live-game-streaming-service/2981/

The rumor calls for an Xbox Live universal gaming portal for PC, Windows Phone 7 and Xbox, where titles would be delivered simultaneously across all three platforms. Supposedly, gamers could buy a game once and play it on multiple platforms witha streaming service akin to OnLive.

Windows 8 is suppose to feature XBL so this may be true. What do you think?

Possible,but still rumor for now.

I'm actually suprised pc already doesn't have some kind of live feature, since they already have a phone version for mini games

Again, that sounds like a fantastic idea to me.

If this is true (and will support old titles), I will laugh at all the people who bought an Xbox 360 for the games.

Why would you laugh at lems?

I don't understand the SW mentality.

You're either backing MS, Sony or Nintendo right? And MS supports multiple platforms. So naturally if you're backing MS you'd want them to do well. The hardware is irrelevant to supporting the company itself. :|

they will have a ways to go to best onlive.

i just checked it out again after a long time and it's kinda a sweet deal now if you get the playpass or whatever they call it.

also the games run way better than they used to.

i'm thinking i messed up when i missed my chance to get a free micro console with a game.

if they ever bring that back i may subscribe.

Hmm... are PC-exclusive games that are on Onlive, like The Witcher and Dawn of War II, still exclusive? Technically it's on another "platform" (and also technically does not require a PC to play either, if you use an Onlive Game System).

From what I've seen, people generally back systems (not surprising, this is System Wars). I've seen people who love the PS2 and hate the PS3, people who love the PS3 and hate the PSP. If these people really backed Sony they'd want all their platforms to succeed, but most people enjoyed seeing the PSP Go go up in flames.

It doesn't make sense to me.

I figured a fanboy would follow whatever their company of choice does. At the end of the day the system is nothing more than a gateway to an experience. If it's MS's decision to try and bridge the gaps between console, PC and mobile gaming I don't see how that's bad for Lemmings. If anything it gives them more options on how to play. Much like Kojima's new plan to have your PS3 and Vita progress be essentially the same. It's just a way to open up new avenues of play for the fanbase.

no it wont. Video games will continue to increase in graphical fidelity streaming gaming doesn't even work right now the amount of compression and sheer down grade in visuals to push that content through the internet we have now while keeping input lag down to a minimum and they haven't even managed that I've tried onlive off and on many times and when it first came out input lag was so atrocious at a 25mbps and 4mbps up line that it was literally push a button and the action on screen would responde near a half second later and they've still yet to improve upon it that much.

graphical fidelity will increase causing for more downgrades in the graphics we see dispalyed on our screen from streaming just to keep up with the input lag these games will cause it will never be a viable option unless gaming stays static with its graphics then as internet speed increases it will actually be able to keep up but they will never get rid of the input lag fully it will always slower then a local setup would be when it comes to input lag.

As well dont even compare Streaming gaming to Digital distribution they are 2 completely different concepts one is a method of receiving content another is a method of playing content online Digtial distribution doesn't have near the hinderances that Streaming gaming does.

if M$ plays its cards right, they'll have one market place you can download/stream games onto pc/console/phones... If they have one unified service with buy anywhere play anywhere attitude its going to be better then the rest. Just image you want to play a game you bought for xbox, mess around on it with the laptop, get home its downloaded to your xbox, and play where you left off.

when someone invents a technology where input lag is closer to that of a local setup then streaming will be a viable option but till then it doesn't matter how fast your internet is if the ping is even 15ms then its not going to be viable.

Once this is confirmed, I will sell my 360 on Ebay the same day. Why in the hell would I own a 360 if I could play the occasional "must-own" exclusive (which is pretty much only the Gears of War games) on my laptop?

You know, I dunno. Last time I bothered signing into onlive, they hadn't actually added any pc exclusives yet, it was all still multiplats. So if they have pc exclusives now... I dunno, on the one hand, you are just playing the same pc version. On the other hand, if you're using the microconsole, it's not a pc... so the game is appearing on a non-pc platform... I dunno.

Your still not getting it, If I can download it or play it streaming, a game I own, on either a PC or console, its an incredibly flexible situation, even if there is button lag, its better then not being able to play at all on my laptop. M$ is in a position where it can achieve this flexibility, its a plus through and through regardless of what technical difficulties this type of technology has starting up.

Any of these companies would LOVE to just give you a box with a name on it and make you pay $99/month to stream games. MS may be the first to achieve this.

Well wouldn't that be viable only for developers who agree to release so (thinking only first party right now)?

And what costs will there be associated with this?

Will this be forced on Windows 8 in order to play games?

Why would you laugh at lems?

I don't understand the SW mentality.

You're either backing MS, Sony or Nintendo right? And MS supports multiple platforms. So naturally if you're backing MS you'd want them to do well. The hardware is irrelevant to supporting the company itself. :|

NeonNinja

Like when some cows went with the "Sony wins because PS3 + PSP + PS2 sales since the start of this gen >>> 360 sales" back in the day, and they got ripped up in here because its System wars, not company wars. And the SDF fakeboys started using the "Sony family" sales defense? Yeah... no, that doesn't go over here.

Um, you know your example is dumb, right?

Comparing the combined sales of three different platforms to one is really stupid.

But opening up your games to work on every platform you as a publisher support is a positive.

And WTF is an SDF?

You're advocating supporting the company, not the specific game platform. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just that in the past people who have done that have been told "this is SYSTEM Wars, not COMPANY Wars." If we're just backing the company ("So naturally if you're backing MS you'd want them to do well. The hardware is irrelevant to supporting the company itself.") how is pointing out that PS3+PS2+PSP sales from November 2005 to whenever far exceed MS-built gaming systems any different from what you are saying? And SDF is Sony Defense Force, a group of fakeboys who make fun of PS3 fans by pretending to be PS3 fans and being waaaaaay over the top.

Of course it will - just like Digital Distribution is now seen as a viable option. I'm not a big fan of cloud computing, but it's going to happen.

There are a few key differences between DD and streaming games. First of all, on a hardware level, a DD server is simpler and less expensive. Secondly streaming necessarily requires compression and there is inevitably input lag. The further you are from the server and the more nodes you go through the worse the lag. Thirdly, DD only requires a persistent Internet connection for the duration of the download whilst streaming requires a persistent Internet connection at all times. Pray that your buddy doesn't decide to download a torrent or watch netflix!

The idea is poor. The role of the cloud in gaming will probably be limited to saving on a remove server and stuff like that.

And much like PS2/PS3 games, PS3/PSP games, and PS3/Vita games, they won't count. Because this is System Wars, not company Wars.

Rules change, things evolve. It is going to be like PSN vs Xbox Live, Steam vs. Origin. Service Wars...

So when Company Wars benefits MS more, the rules will change, like how only high rated exclusives mattered, until PS3 passed 360 in high rated exclusives? :D

movies =/= video games

The technical challenges of doing the same with games are far greater than that of streaming video.

Um, no.

Onlive and "buy once, play multiplatform" are not the same thing. As far as I know, Microsoft is not getting into the "streaming games" business (because it's a moronic way to distribute software).

Microsoft wants to unify the purchasing experience in Windows 8, and this has a lot more to do with video than games. Right now, if you buy a movie on your XBOX 360 it's "stuck" there. You can't watch it on your PC or iPad. MS wants to change this by allowing content purchased on the 360 or Windows PC to be playable on any "registered" device (you get up to 5).

This will affect games, in theory, by allowing you to purchase a game on XBOX Live Arcade and then play it on the XBOX 360, Windows Phone 7, and Windows PC, assuming you had all 3. In theory, if you bought the online version of a "packaged" XBOX 360 game you would also get an online copy of the PC version.

Streaming Netflix is doomed. The cable/telco companies will kill it. This is what "net neutrality" is all about.
