Why is Nintendo doing this? I thought they were only good at gaming? Is there a real market for downloadable movies? Id rather watch in HD on my handheld than 3D.....CoolyfettNintendo said they are also in HD and in 3D.
Also I like this idea I can use it when I go on vacation or when I'm at school I used my DSi a lot sometimes just to listen to music when I was in between classes. I'm sure I would use my 3DS for stuff like that aswell.
Same point as watching any movies on any portable. It's a 3D handheld so isn't it sort of obvious that they would have 3D movie playback functionality? What's the point in watching 3d movies on a 3 inch screen?

I suppose I don't get it due to not being able to see fake 3d (stereoscopic 3d effect), but it seems to me like if I COULD see stereoscopic 3d, I'd rather it be on a big screen. I mean, I always hear that these 3d movies are better on the great big imax screens... Yeah, I can pretty safely say that if I was able to see fake 3d, I'd rather have 3d games and movies on my big screen tv, where i can enjoy it more and enjoy it with others, than on a 3 inch handheld, even WITH the glasses. What's the point in watching 3d movies on a 3 inch screen?

Well, if you had a big screen TV available, you wouldn't be using a handheld to watch movies anyway, would you?
And just out of curiostity, what's "fake 3d"?
i just hope there is a way to watch the movies I bought for my regular tv on the 3DS. I'm talking about the digital copy of course, like how you can watch movies on your ipodGunSmith1_basicPlus the iTunes store gives you both an HD copy of a movie (which you can then playback on a PC/HDTV through HDMI out) or an SD copy for your iPod/iPhone. I don't know if Nintendo will have enough foresight to offer these kind of options.
Like you said, the best way to distribute 3DS movies would be as digital copies accompanying Blu-ray discs, just like they do with digital copies for iPods. I hope Nintendo concentrates on that particular area, because I don't want to have to choose between paying full price for an HD movie or a tiny low-res 3D one.

Oh well nevermind then. Still isn't a bad res for a handheld. I'm reading that the PSP is only 480x272.Dahaka-UKBrunoBRS was at E3 and he saw some of the movies played.
it looks just like on your TV... but you don't need to wear glasses to watch it. i saw some footage of "how to train your dragon on it" (while looking for the MGS trailer >.> ), and it looks really well.BrunoBRS
it's a feature.. don't like it don't use it. For 3d movies, it could be pretty cool. I'd rather use a 3ds and get 3d without having to wear glasses and get a headache. fastrFrom what I understand, most people that get headaches or nausea from watching 3d has nothing to do with the glasses, but rather the way their brain processes the stereoscopic effect. Meaning if you get headaches from watching stereoscopic 3d with glasses, autostereoscopic 3d without glasses will most likely have the same effect. The option of turning the effect slider down on the 3ds may help, but at the expense of getting the full 3d effect.

OK, I see what you mean. Though "simulated 3D" might be a more accurate description.

The video quality on the PSP still looks great though after all these years.
That's Dogfights (The Last Gunfighter) playing on the PSP.
If the 3DS plays movies then it'll be great. I might buy one just for myself. I know my kid wants one. Just wondering what format will the videos be in.....
Edit: In case a mod might find the PSP video image questionable, I have the Dogfights DVD sets.
Fake 3d is stereoscopic 3d; taking a two dimensional image, such as an image on a flat screen, and giving it a 3d effect by making each eye see a slightly different image. The image doesn't truely exist in 3-dimensional space. If you walk around to the side of the tv, you won't see an image projecting out of the tv. Contrary to popular belief, people with full or partial blindness in one eye still have depth perception and see the real world in three dimensions, but they cannot see fake 3d (2d images made to appear 3d through stereoscopic visual effects). Real 3d, as far as games/movies/etc, would be something like holographic images that you can move around and through (something like the holodeck on Star Trek) and is a long way from being a practical option.[QUOTE="ianuilliam"]

That's a valid point. Means the same, really, but simulated does come off as less negative.Because sometimes, that's going to be the only screen you have. What's the point in watching 3d movies on a 3 inch screen?

It's movies in 3D that's why, it's a selling point.
3D photos
3D games
3D no glasses
3D this and that
As they can't showcase the actual 3D effect to the mass market, they need selling points so that the gamer of each family gets a hold of 3DS, passes it around other family/friends, they get the ahaaa feeling and go out to buy it, simple. That's also why they are heavily focusing on hardcore games this time around.

I love how on the PSP, being able to watch movies is a huge plus, but on the 3DS it would suddenly be a useless feature. System Wars strikes again!!

Yup. I take mine to the gym with me. An hour on a cardio machine can get boring sometimes. Watching videos on the PSP makes that hour go really quick.
Of course there is a market for downloadable movies, iTunes has done it for years on iPhone, iPod Touch
Digitally. Netflix streaming would be insane....but doubtful.Wonder how they will be distributed. Online/netflix or retail cartridges....

Thing is, though, a big advantage of iTunes is that you don't have to make a compromise between an HD movie or an SD movie -- you get two copies when you buy a movie, one for your phone, one for your PC/HDTV...Of course there is a market for downloadable movies, iTunes has done it for years on iPhone, iPod Touch

By contrast, Nintendo steadfastly seems to hold out on even allowing TV out in their handhelds...
To expand their market.IronBass
Expand into digital downloads of movies? Very Interesting. They have deals with Paramont, Disney & Warner Bros....It will be interesting if 20th Cent Fox & Universal come along. I have downloaded a few movies from PSN to my PSP and they look really good for SD, once they switch over to HD I a sure they will look even better. Its just interesting how Nintendo is following the downloadable content trend when all they are supposed to do is gaming...Interesting..

Interesting question and argument...Its funny yousay this because I was just having the same chat with some dudes at work. Whats the point in watching movies on a small screen like the DS, PSP or Iphone/Itough? They never release the numbers for this topic, as least I have never seen the numbers in any of the business rags I read. But who is really pushing this agenda...is it the device firms, the studios or another factor. I read all the time that Blockbuster Video is having trouble, but Net Flicks and Red Box seem to be doing ok...RIGHT?? With Red Box you still have to leave your home though. Is THIS the future of movies? Will Sony and Nintendo eventually have music & book stores?? What is peoples opinions on all this?
Will Sony and Nintendo eventually have music & book stores??CoolyfettI would be surprised if there wasn't some form of e-book functionality in the next gen of handhelds. That 100 Classic Books cartridge for DS is actually really good, and they could certainly extrapolate that by letting you buy individual books from the DS3 shop.
