MS and Nintendo are releasing almost all of what's left of their big franchises at the end of this year. What I mean by that is, the games that sold really well on previous gen systems, the NEW games in those franchises are being almost totally used up THIS year. After that, they really don't have much else. Nintendo will still have pikmin, starfox and maybe mario kart, and MS will still have Banjo and Fable. I'm not bashing the games themselves, I realize that they both have great exclusive games coming this holiday, but all I'm saying is they shouldn't use up most of thier games all at once like this.

Sony, on the other hand, while having a great exclusive lineup this yearas well, is making sure next year, and the year after also has plenty of BIG exclusive franchises that will be coming to PS3 for the first time.

Here is how things generally work when talking about system sellers (that were on previous consoles): If you have a game that sold really well on a previous platform, there is going to be a greater chance that the game will be anticipated by the owners of that game. And when a new console comes out, that game will have a higher chance of selling systems than a lesser known game. Once that first game comes out, ussually it's done it's damage in terms of selling systems, which is why you see the second or third game in a franchise that is on a particular consoles sales decrease sometimes (MGS3 and GT4 for example). There ARE expetions, but this is generally how it happens. If MS and Nintendo release most of thier BIG franchises in ONE holiday season, they will burn up alot of momentum, and they will expose a big disadvantage.

Just my thoughts, post your opinion and please don't get offended, just post how you would disagree or agree.

Yeah it does.

And PS3 is going to be getting plenty of those as well, especially from sony themselves.

He's saying that Sony isn't releasing all their heavy hitters at once while still releasing potentially good titles.

Agreed.

But luckily that is something they can fix.

Nintendo and MS can't turn back time to spread their main franchises out better.

How do you know another Starfox isn't in development? If I remember correctly, Nintendo hasn't announced all their games currently in development. And Starfox DS should hold you over until then. :)

I have to agree Sony has done a good job by spacing its games out more for 08, but as we get into the year I'm sure we'll be talking about many more games that have been announced for Wii and 360.

What's stopping them from making new installments in those franchises?

Or they can make completely new IPs for next year

Look at DS, and all the new IPs on there. Also if Wii sales continue and if it takes lead, then i suspect more third party games will be released next year.

They COULD of course.... but when talking about system sellers, it's ussually the first game to come out on that platform that really drives sales, yes, there are exceptions (halo 2) but that is ussually how it works.

And yes they can make new IPs as well, and so can sony.

well i do see your point. i would say it would be best if nintendo released corruption August/September and Brawl in December and galaxy in Febuary so that its all spaced out and gamers will have somethign good to look forward to but that wpould also mean that 3rd party wouldnt bother with the wii since they know that they wont stand a chance with nintendo games.

And that is what is going to happen and has begun to happen. One reason that Sony will have some heavy hitters in long run is that it's taking so freakin long to make the games. So one could argue that is a bad idea. Create games that takes year to make. Which in all honesty I enjoy the fact that the developers are taking their time. Hopefully those games will be amazing. I see what you are trying to say but your argument is weak. Do you think that Nintendo will let their current reign slip? Do you think that developers will miss out on cashing in on the Wii's success?

Sony can do new IPs too.

In fact they have already proven this, with games like LAIR, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Resistence, Uncharted and more.

Sony is the third largest publisher out there. they publish quite a few more games than MS and Nintendo do. And they are known for taking risks and publishing some very original games, unlike alot of other game publishers.

I expect better games by 2008 (and some of the announcements don't actually look that bad, if a little strange.) Most of the games on the PS3 and 360 have been in development for years. Wii games have not had that luxury since developers were unsure if the console would catch on or end up like the Gamecube. Developers are starting to make more games for the Wii, which is shown by the many game announcements. Most of the announcements this year are, like you said, uncompelling. But as the Wii goes on in its lifespan we may see better games since developers will get more time. Most of the Wii games that have been in development for a while are all first party, hence the good, quality titles coming mostly from them. This is only one possibility, remember, and it seems to be a likely one in my eyes. The question remains: if this happens, will Nintendo be able to catch up games-wise?

Let me get this straight... you don't thinkmass effect, gears of war, Lost oddesy etc and going to become great franchises. As some great franchises end, new ones begin. And both ms and nintendo and trying to take over the '07 halidays, sony is not even in the race. I have no doubt that the games for 08 will be great as well.

Sure they will. They will greatly benefit MSes next console a great deal (hopefully).

But I'm sticking with this generation for now in terms of console war discussions.

And BTW what do you mean not in the race? PS3 has a great holiday lineup...

But in terms of thier main game franchises ATM. their strategy is shortsighted and just not a good idea.

The logivity of some games will be huge. Microsoft will most probably relese overpriced (in some cases) DLC packs. And really. When games are out, the still contributeto tthe persons buying decision. Multipat games still offerall three companys profit.

But yeah, good post, well thought out annnnd the red font is stylish.

Yes, already released games do contribute to alot of peoples buying decisions. But in terms of pure momentum, for marketing purposes, its always better to spread your BIG games out over the course of a consoles lifespan as much as you can.

IMO, all the big guns will be on the Wii and 360 this year, while the PS3 will have a decent '07 and awesome '08. I won't discredit 360's '08 lineup yet, however. Alan Wake has a lot of people hyping it, and it looks good.

And I am more intersted in PS3s lineup than Wiis.

They are following this strategy. Which will give them a big advantage, so hoefully PS3 will have consistantly good sales. Once it gets its price down more, and more BIG games come out for it that are slated for the coming years it will end up selling pretty well IMO. Don't forget that it will also have a very long lifecycle.
