Microsoft are selling a console with 20 CU's, the amount of performance lost here vs the price difference its a product I would NEVER recommend.
The specifications of the XSS should give console gamer's a idea of what a console looks like when companies fall your $399 or lower demands for a new consoles in 2020.
Don't let the cherry picked last generation games fool you, games like Assassins Creed will be running at 1080-1440p at 30FPS on this console or worse.
Its not enough power for 1440/60 without serious sacrifice.
Like Sony makes it's decisions on what Microsoft prices it's consoles.
Let's face it the PS5 will cost around the same as the XSX and will outsell it any where from 3-5 to 1.
Casuals are gonna eat this shit up. Sony has no answer. Guess it wasn't such a good idea to release with one console huh Sony bros?
if the ps5 digital is a 100 bucks more. you get 6 teraflops more, ssd with more space for digital games, faster ssd, and a good cpu.
series s all you get is a better cpu.
but now xbox fans thinks a better cpu means better graphics instead of teraflops.
more raytracing
more textures
have fun playing next gen games at 1080p/30fps. remember when they say 120fps it for current gen gamepass games. not next gen titles that are made next gen only.
casuals are gamers to and do research which console is better.
xbox fans series s is going to have a better cpu so games are going to look better. yet the gpu is weak as the pro for next gen titles.
funny is series s will have better fps over the one x but the games will look worse because not in 4k. but yet its a next gen machine?
now xbox fans are saying fps is more important than teraflops of performance. graphics don't count no more.
I am sure the 4TF SeSXbox will be a hard sell unless they can demonstrate the scalability. People need to see it in action but we haven't seen much of anything yet.
The 100 million PS4 gamers who don’t give a shit about exclusives will lap the serious S up
The Xbone has been cheaper than the PS4 for most of this gen. Price obviously isn't the biggest factor.
@bluestars: and leave behind their PS4 games? PS5 digital will be 400 bucks. You think a 100 dollar barrier is enough to make people switch? Lmao. Stick to touting the unimportant Spec differences between PS5 and XSex. This gen was the worst gen for either company to lose. People are sticking where their digital library is.
@bluestars: X1 has been cheaper than PS4 for 2 years here in the UK... Made absolutely no difference.
If Sony made a weak casual box, they never would have heard the end of it. I'm sure there's more of an advantage by having one unified architecture for Playstation. Playing it above the middle of these two makes sure everyone gets the same experience.

but yet those ps4 owners might not give a crap about the exclusives but they care about 4k or raytracing or what makes next gen look next gen. multiplat games as well will look better on the ps5 over this crap.
how much raytracing is this thing going to have? why doesn't xbox one x or ps4 pro have raytracing? cpu does not = better graphics just better fps but at what cost? 1080p or 720p at 60fps.
4k became main stream so why have a system that can't do it?
for 100 bucks more you get 4k/60fps or 4k/120fps like call of duty. you know a casual game.
so happy sony went with same specs for both systems so the digital people don't get duped with low ass specs with just cpu upgrade from last gen.
Casuals want a disc drive.
They are the ones going to the store picking up madden and nba2k and COD physically at the shops. They don't want to download anything they want to put there disc install there game and be done with it.
The casuals need that drive the series s is off the table for these guys they buy 1-3 games a year all physical all the time.
@ProtossRushX: Complete farce of an argument especially when you consider this gen. You still need to download and install the game when you pop in the disc. Have you forgotten about that little detail all this time?

I think you are wrong. Most people want to hit a button and play a game. Most younger games have spent their lives grabbing things off of app stores. Also most people don't want to go to a retail store anymore.
Old school gamers who like to collect or play all their old games want disc drives.
The 100 million PS4 gamers who don’t give a shit about exclusives will lap the serious S up
There are plenty of reasons for them not to transition.
Ex.
- Their games library will be gone when transitioning platforms
- You assume those gamers:
- don't have 4KTVs and/or, don't want 4K graphics
- aren't that into PlayStation exclusives or, PlayStation exclusive content like Spiderman in Marvel Avengers
- aren't OK keeping their existing systems for at least another year
etc.
The Xbox Series S has a great price but, gamers aren't going to turn away from PlayStation *just* because of the price.

I seriously doubt they are offering the digital version for $399 they would lose money at that price point.. more realistically $449 is the break even point.
@regnaston: whose going want to be stuck with PS store only to save 50 bucks? Should easily be 100 bucks cheaper, else it's not worth the difference. They make most of their money from PSN so they'll eat the cost and easily make profit.
Sony already has a 4 teraflops system, with a disc drive. It's called the PS4 Pro. Casuals don't know any difference. Its gonna look bad that the Xbox One X had 6 teraflops and this only has 4 for casuals.

I doubt it is $100 difference. The drive does not cost that much to manufacture and that is the only difference. If they sell at a breakeven point it would be around $499 for the PS5 Disc and $449 for the PS5 Digital. If they take a hit and sell the consoles at $50 less than they manufactured them for then that would mean a loss of almost $60 million for the reported 1.8 million units they have ready this holiday season.
This article is about the XSX but the tweets they are referring to also mention the PS5

It's going to backfire.
Games will look worse on the xbox because of the parity strategy devs will put for the Series X and Series S. After all, this was their original intent. Xbox's strategy is to have games available on all of their platforms, even if that means sacrificing graphics and making their flagship game look worse than last gen.
This is a far stretch, but it would be hilarious as hell if Sony announced their digital at $299 as well. Lems would cry and shout foul and I'd be dying over here.
@NathanDrakeSwag:
The reason the PS4 started so well....yip...cheaper
Facts
So what about April 2014 and beyond when Xbone was cheaper? I remember those Titanfall bundles at firesale prices.
I seriously doubt they are offering the digital version for $399 they would lose money at that price point.. more realistically $449 is the break even point.
No $449 is not more realistic at least to people with good judgement.
Many here claimed the series S would be $199 and the X $399 and how did that go? Now that was unrealistic.

In a series of tweets, analyst Daniel Ahmad explained that, after examining the Bill of Materials for the console, a single Series X console must be somewhere in the ballpark of $500 to manufacture. The CPU/GPU and memory alone would make up around half of that price, and that's not even counting the cost of the assembly itself. While the design might allow the Xbox Series X to run as quiet as a mouse, it is clear that the phrase "spared no expense" was applied quite liberally and literally in the console's construction.
From your own link look who the culprits are,cpu/gpu and memory account for half the console manufacturing cost, the PS5 GPU/CPU are cheaper so is ram.
Now compare that to what supposedly increased the PS5 manufacturing price.
Bloomberg continues in its article saying that the "biggest headache" is making sure they have a reliable supply of DRAM and NAND flash memory.
https://www.tweaktown.com/news/70625/bloomberg-playstation-5-manufacturing-costs-sit-at-around-450/index.html
Yeah Nand and DRAM which also the xbox series X has hell the series X has even more Nand flash as its NVME is bigger 1TB.
So if you see the PS5 does look like a system that was going to be $399 not $499.
The PS5 has smaller Ssd,much smaller chip, slower ram and narrower bus.
SONY can't really undercut them seeing as though the Series S price is undoubtedly cheaper than the PS5 digital edition.
Apples and oranges and all that shit.
Either way they are two completely different approaches to next gen apart from both being digital. I don't think there is a single person who thought the digital PS5 would be cheaper than the S.. It will almost certainly be more.
My guess is PS5 digital $399 PS5 $499
I don't think we can rule out a $399-$449 PS5 (DE). That would compete against both Xbox models.
Not gonna happen.
Hardware wise MS has done the better job. They have been very clever I cant understand how they wont compete better this gen.
really though did xbox make the right choice? what if xbox fan is all digital? those digital people got the shit end of the stick. 6 teraflops difference, less ssd space for the digital people as well and less ram. xbox fans laughed at the ps5 825 gig ssd space for digital but 512gig is now ok? then they charge 219 for the ssd add on for only 1tb more. so the digital people only can have 4 games at once with that much space.
at least with sony if you go all digital your playing the same specs wise as the physical disc one.
sony console are the same and people will get the same no matter what ps5 they buy.
@Nonstop-Madness:
Next gen ✅
Cheap ✅
C.O.D,Fifa and Fortnite ✅
Casuals Or ps gamers who don’t have emotional attachments to Sony and want a cheap next gen 2nd console are gonna lap this shit up
Keeping your existing hardware is even cheaper and, it'll play games like COD, FIFA, and Fortnite for at least another year or two. And it goes well beyond "emotional attachment" when your games library (monetary value) is attached to another platform.
The value equation is a lot more complicated than just price + cheaper than other next gen consoles.
I seriously doubt they are offering the digital version for $399 they would lose money at that price point.. more realistically $449 is the break even point.

Personally I think both drives are probably 1TB and MS is advertising total space and Sony is advertising usable space (just a hunch)
Also if Sony was actually able to sell it for $399 don't you think they would have announced that already to steal the thunder that has went MS way the past 36 hours?? (I would have)
This is a bait thread, but you're not wrong. I don't see how Sony can undercut them at this point without selling at a loss. Being so close to release, there is no way they could undercut the Series X/S prices without pushing the release date back. And Sony won't be willing to give MS that big of a head start.
Yeah, I think the series S will be a failure for a couple reasons. First off, it may have more "performance" than an XBO, but the XBO is basically 7-8 year old tech. How does a series S compare to say, a 1080 GPU which is already dated? So, you're looking at something that I would suspect to struggle with most AAA titles going forward on that generation, and be more likely to be used for lower spec xbox store stuff. That said, that lower spec Xbox store stuff will also play on an XBO S which will be dropping in price considerably this fall, and that's what I'm thinking of picking up to play OG Xbox and XBLA stuff on. No reason to buy a series S that won't play those games that much better, if any better and won't have the capabilities of playing much new stuff, right?
$100 more for 2.5x the performance when looking at the PS5. So people who don't care much about exclusives and are interested in third party stuff will no doubt be looking at that over the series S. The series X will be like $100 on top of that and maybe a 20% performance boost rather than a 250% boost. But I still think the largest deciding factor between the PS5 and XBX will be the exclusives, and online. Nobody will want to leave behind all their friends on XBL or PSN or deny themselves the exclusive titles they enjoy just to save a measly $100.
They should have just made a digital only XBX for like $399 and scrapped the series S entirely.
Casuals are gonna eat this shit up. Sony has no answer. Guess it wasn't such a good idea to release with one console huh Sony bros?

The switch has shown that the less powerful, cheaper console will sell better. Plus, you get Gamepass Ultimate with EA access and Xbox Live Gold in that bundle, with hundreds of games already available. I can totally see the Series S curb stomping the PS5 Digital for being cheaper and more consumer friendly. But the Xbox series X vs. PS5 outcome is anyone's guess atm.

Uhm ... no. Microsoft could have for instance announced the XSS at $299 months ago knowing very well that Sony is 100% not going to match that price (they absolutely aren't). Sony's best move is to execute their marketing strategy on their own terms whether the price is $399 or $499 etc.

Honestly, this way of thinking needs to stop. Instead of saying that they're turning away from PlayStation, we need to look at it as just simply buying into the other brand to enjoy it as well. You don;t have to get rid of your entire PS4 collection to buy a Series X and vice versa. You can keep both, and buy both systems.
