Rejoice!

Microsoft has determined "that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console," and will "refund to customers the amount paid for an out of warranty repair due to a general hardware failure associated with the e74 error message."

The bolded part is a little confusing, though. Does this mean that E74 is the same as RROD?

I would say so, isn't E-74 a hardware failure also?

Good news. Does this warranty cover me throwing my (already broken) xbox against the garage wall?

Good move. I and my cousin fixed his 360 once by ourselves, and it got an E-74 error one month afterwards, so it's almost certain that these two are related.

They will refund the money you paid for the E74 if you already had to send it in. How is that "a little late"?

Fixing it yourself voids the warranty bud, dont expect to be able to send it in for replairs once its taken apart.

Well, when they extended the RROD warranty they refunded everyone who paid. I don't see why they wouldn't this time.

Its to late for people who got E74 a long time ago.

Before it was just 1 year for E74, so alot of people tried fixing it themselves if it was over a year old, or they sold it on ebay.

Its a nice gesture by MS, but they should have done this earlyier imo.

It's apparently something to do with the scaler chip., which I've never heard associated with the RROD.

Still should have been 3 years for RROD and E74 along time ago imo.

Alot of people didnt want to pay 150$ for a fix for E74 error, when its 199 for a brand new one.

Better late then never, but its still a big pain MS's hardware issues.

Well, it doesn't really matter now. These two things were the most common failures from what I hear. Good move from MS, better late than never.

E74 wasn't that big until recent, hell majority of owners didn't even hear about it until end of 2008. Obviously it was a flaw that wasn't detected b/c it probably due to wear on the machine from normal usage.

Tell that to my cousin who got E74 3 years ago.

For me its not that big of a deal as i got E74 at xmas, but i feel bad for those who got screwed over from MS's unreliable hardware this gen.

Doesn't change the fact that it wasn't until recent that is started showing up more often... I never heard about it until TY made a thread about it back in November 08.

Its coming up more these days in the news/forums yes, but its still been around for awhile, and completely sucks for those who are out of warranty.

Thats good news i guess, although i wish they'd do something about their drive issues more than anything else. Its starting to become a real annoyance having to explain to people who come into where i work, with a 360 that rips big chunks out of their games, that microsoft say that its their fault their games are damaged beyond use or repair, so we cant do anything.

Some people are stupid and will throw their console around expecting everything to be fine, and then it is their fault. However, its not an insignificant figure which have found their games destroyed through slight vibrations or no movement at all.

That article is old, and I thinks those were the hatachi brand drives. They use benq and phillips(I think).

23/03/09 is old?

And you may be right about the drives, but annecdotal evidence suggests that the consoles we sold this christmas are most prone to it. If they have got models with new drives i'd much appreciate if MS sent some our way so we dont have to deal with this anymore.

Kudos to Microsoft, and I don't say that often. It would be good if it also covered disc drive errors/DRE, but this is a relief.

No, I've "only" had 3 RROD's, no E74 (yet). I get the occasional disc read error message, which is a little worrying. But my 360 seems to be working well enough these days.

Awesome. Makes me wish I still had a warranty. Unfortunately, people who bought a 360 before 4-14-2006 are up a creak if they get any issues. Kinda worries me when I play, TBH.

Wow. I can not believe how some people are praising Microsoft for extending these warranties for system defects. The only reason they doing this is because they don't want to face massive lawsuits. This system should have never released with all these malfunctions. I know things break, especially electronics but this is ridiculous. This company is so lucky it has the sales it does now. They released the console a year before the others and now look were they at. They have been passed by the Wii and the PS 3 is hanging around too despite a high price tag. Microsoft needs to seriously take a hardware designing lesson from Sony and Nintendo when they release the Xbox 720 or whatever it will be called. I know I am ranting but I just dont get why a billion dollar corporation would release a product with a known defect. And to the people who say it's no big deal to be without their system for a few weeks while it gets repaired I lol at you. I would like to turn on my system without holding my breath that one day it will just die on me. if Toyota or GM released a vehicle that had known engine failures I wonder would it be okay then if your car was in the shop every other month. I know comparing a car to a console is totally different but hopefully somebody realizes the point Im trying to make.

I don't think you should be thanking them for something they shouldn't have happened in the first place. There are just doing what they should be doing. They should be thanking you for continuing to support their crappy product.

As much as I agree with the sentiment of your post you and I both know when it comes to big companies like MS what should be done isn't always what is done. So it's good to see they'll at least bear up to their responsibility.

Agreed, moments like these makes me buy multiplats like SF4 and Resident Evil on my ps3 just to increase my 360's Longevity. Unless the differences are so noticable then i'll get it for the 360

So what percentage of failures does RRoD offically have now with this E-74 counting as it? It's funny how it's good news that another form of RRoD is present in the X360 and Lems rejoice.....because MS says my bad.

Thank you Microsoft!

They aren't bearing up to their responsibilities they are avoiding yet more bad press and possible lawsuits. They aren't doing this to help you they are doing this to help them. I give props to Nintendo and Sony for releasing a console that doesnt have these horrible flaws and hold together. Especially Sony because most of their tech was brand spanking new and could have easily ended up like the dead 360s. I don't give props to companies that own up to responsibilities only when the heat is turned up.

Still should have been 3 years for RROD and E74 along time ago imo.

A little confused here. If your cousin got it 3 years ago it still would have been covered by the general 1 year warrany. Unless somehow your cousin was able to get his hands on a 360 in the winter/early spring of 2005

[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"]Does this mean that E74 is the same as RROD?killerfist

I would say so, isn't E-74 a hardware failure also?

*oh, and good news! MS cares! j/k:P

I think you mean they care about saving their skin..lol... because they don't want to do a recall., that will do a lot more damage to them...Its just proves the 360 hardware is stright up faulty..Also they need to extended the Red Lights of Death warranty because its still killing million of 360 hardware out there..In fact i don't think thats the only two problems..I hope Microsoft lose even more money that will show them not to produce crap
