Oh snap!
Dang, the $399 ELITE is going to be the same price as the $299 PS3...possibly!
That's going to be sweet...maybe.
This war is just beginning!!!!....if the rumor is to be believed.
----------------
This got me thinking.
What's ELITE about the ELITE, now that the PRO is dead?
Will consumers see a difference between two products at $299, one of which plays Blu-Rays, and one doesn't?
Well if you look at the box in the Wal-Mart Ad, it looks like MS droped the word "Elite".O

With both the PS3 and the 360 getting price drops, I wonder what Nintendo is going to do with the Wii. They've finally been able to compete price wise.HaziqonfireIt'll be three years pretty soon, and still not even the slightest hint of a price drop. greedy am confirmed? :P
Waiting? I think most have moved on actually with a Wii or 360, to most customers a console is a console is a console.PlayStation 3 is still the better value.
Free Online, Wi-Fi built in, Blu-Ray, ect
They will need to do more than that. Customers have been waiting for years for a PS3 pricedrop than a 360 countering one.

I don't really expect them to do it until they desperately need a sales boost - and I guess we'll see what happens when new software releases, mainly Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros Wii. Also - That Vitality sensor is coming out sometime next year.. and well Nintendo has been successful with its other peripherals, it'll be interesting to see if this takes off like others have - even thought at the moment I think its incredibly stupid and useless.

Meh, I disagree. A console is a console is a console is a console I will agree with, however.
It has the word "Elite" on the box, so it's a big deal, lol. Actually I don't expect MS to do well so much because of this but I don't think Sony will dominate like most people seem to think, in fact I expect the 360 to outsell the ps3 again before the year ends. themyth01

I don't think Nintendo will go for a price drop. The Wii isn't really in competition with the PS3 & 360.

They go after different markets, but they're both in the same industry. They might be. Both companies are trying to get a share of Nintendo's market - With Natal and those 'AHEMmotes' that sony has - its pretty clear.
Hell, bundle it with Forza 3 and ODST and they have themselves a winner.Bundle the elite with a copy of forza 3 and I might consider it.

Nah the question is to Game or to Blu-rayHmm to Blu-Ray or not Blu-ray that is the question?

Not really a halo fan here, but hey if there's one more game being given out for free, why not.

Sony and MS's motion technology looks good, but at the same time they're not going all out. Expect a little more support than Eyetoy last year, but not a huge motion focus shift. MS and Sony's motion entrace will probably kill the motion market anyways.

Well, generally speaking not just specifically for you selfish, you. :PPrice doesn't sell consoles, games do. The PS3 didn't fail because of it's price. This may be hard for some people to understand.
The 360 has more than sufficient games to compete head to head against the PS3.

Trust me dude, price did play a huge role in it. Everyone took one look at the price and they immediatly dismissed it. THey hopped on the 360 bandwagon, and never switched, granted, lack of games (at the time) was a factor, but ultimatley, most ppl jus couldnt afford it.Price doesn't sell consoles, games do. No, I'm sorry to say it, but you're wrong, it was PRICE, it was always PRICE.
There are many variables, like you mentioned, but PRICE is the NUMBER ONE CATALYST FOR MASS MARKET SALES.
PRICE will be and will always be the BIGGEST FACTOR in Console sales, so remember this, that way in five years, we won't be saying the same things about the next systems.
The question is, is the $299 PRICE low enough for LARGE MASS MARKET Penetration? I don't know, probably not. We'll see.

Why are people mentioning bluray, when its clear that when people make the decision to chose PS3 because of bluray.............they are less likely to buy many games?? I mean, of course users on gaming sites (like me) bought it for games, but i know a few "older folks" who wanted it for the bluray player, and they have 2 games in 3 years for it :| Im not saying the slim wont outsell the Elite (it probably will for a bit) im saying 90%, gamers choose games.............not bluray. And those that choose bluray............dont buy many games............isnt that a bad thing?? ..............to buy it because of bluray?? :?

I never really understood this argument. A console sale is a console sale and, I for one, bought mine for BOTH.
Besides, Sony is responsible for the inception of Blu-Ray. If you buy games and movies they win twice.

True, but in the CONSOLE business, the vast majority of revenue comes from software, not hardware sales. And when people buy your console as a movie player FIRST, then thats its primary use. It would be like people buying 360 because it was a DVD player, and then, using it mostly as a DVD player. Thats a lost investment for MS because they sell consoles at a loss (initially) and make money back on software..........just like sony. When the reverse happens, you lose revenue. The fee for deving a game is 10x higher for using the bluray format. Bluray is a long term investment for sony, PS3 software is not. The average lifespan of a console (and i mean dev support) is 5 years. Where does the majority of support of the PS2 come from?? Exactly my point. 3rd parties dont support it like they do 360/PS3 because its not a current gen console, and is not financially viable for them. So your window to sell software is smaller than the window for making money on bluray movies. Bluray will be around for years, and years (until DD takes over) So, at this point, i say selling it as a GAMING machine is more important than pusing bluray...........and having people buy it as one. Im NOT saying PS3 isnt a good console at all (i shouldnt have to say this, but fanboys are...........well......fanatical :P )
MS is making a big mistake not including Fable 2 and Halo 3 in the box (unless they are I dont know) because head to head specs people are going to choose the PS3 with the bluray and free online.http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=4898&mp=1

Nope. People were just as willing to purchase a PS3 in it's first year as they were the 360 in it's first as demonstrated by the 1st year sales of each system. The PS3 has actually sold at the same pace as the 360 up to this point. Where's the price factor at work in that stat?
The only reason the PS3 didn't sell like the PS2 was that it lacked horsepower. If Sony had delivered on it's 1080p 60/120fps 4D BS then the PS3 would have destroyed the 360 and maybe even the Wii. When Sony said in 2005 that PS3 games will run 1080p 60fps and look like this...
and then delivered stuff like this running at 720p...
...people saw the PS3 was a joke and the Playstation 3 namebrand was ruined.
To further demonstrate my point I cite the PS2 vs the DC, GC, and Xbox. The DC was only $99 when the PS2 came out and the PS2 destroyed it. The GameCube released at cheaper than the PS2 and didn't stand a chance. In 2003 the GameCube dropped to $99 and was annihilated by the $199 PS2. Xbox was $199 in 2002 same as the PS2 and once again the PS2 outpaced it like 4 to 1. Ultimately it was the games that made the PS2 what it was.
Same thing with the Genesis and SNES.
Once again, if price is the focal point of console sales then why does the Wii consistently ousell the 360, which is cheaper and offers 7x the power, dvd playback, etc.? It's the games.
In the PS3's case, the downfall came because Sony was lying about the power of the PS3 and there was a consumer backlash when everbody started seeing what a PS3 could really do. Not to mention the severe lack of games up until MGS4.
My 2 bits, anyway.
And what will that do exactly? People will get a PS3 instead of the Elite. Luckily they still have the cheaper Arcade.Floppy_JimI'll be getting an Elite, mainly because I like the black color and I need the additional memory. I already have a 60GB PS3, so why would I need a PS3 Slim? There were a lot of people waiting for the Elite to become cheaper as well. So what it will do is increase XBox 360 sales. Any price cut will do this automatically.
Only people who want a Blu-Ray player will care about that come holiday time. It'll come down to the games and what gamers friends are playing. It's really the games that sell the systems.PlayStation 3 is still the better value.

The PS3 has still kept pace with the 360 up to this point. That's how I came up with that. THEIR SALES HAVE BEEN EQUAL IN THE SAME PERIOD OF TIME and the PS3 even had a delayed European launch. Not to mention a few million people that have bought multiple 360s due to RROD.
It's a very real possibility that the PS3 has infact outsold the 360 in the same period of time. I'd say it has.

Price was a part of it yes, but it wasn't just the price. When the XBox 360 was $399 and even $350 it was still sell very well, even with RROD. Those sales didn't have much to do with the price, but the games that were on the system. Why would millions of people continue to buy a high price game consoles with faults like RROD? Because they loved the games that were being played on it. The XBox Live service probably didn't hurt either. The XBox 360 price cut last year did spark a sales surge though, but the games being released for it also convinced people to get it. People keep forgetting that the PS3 is still the highest priced console of the 3. XBox 360 Arcade is still over $199, and Wii is$249. If you think these lower prices won't play a factor in holidays sales, you're nuts.Raise your hand if you love price wars! :D
Anyway, there sure are alot of cows that are certain the PS3 will contionously outsell the 360 now. Lets just see, man i love this part of the war.
I hope it stays this competitive right till the end like the SNES vs Megadrive war. In the end, its better for us.
