They have absolutely nothing to do with providing you with online play (keep in mind this only has to do strictly with online play).

Your ISP provides you with your internet service, and and your online identity (which you are already paying for), while you paid for the software that makes all of this happen (the game disk) AND the hardware you play it on. Almost all 360 games use P2P for online gameplay, so it is actually YOUR 360 hardware and internet connection that make online gaming possible, NOT MS, they have absolutely NOTHING to do with that.

NOW, if you were playing a game that used dedicated servers (very few do on 360, the only one I know of is L4D2) then you would have a point, but ONLY if it was a first party MS game (which it is NOT) . If it is a third party game, then yet again, MS has NOTHING to do with that, because the servers would be provided by and upkeep would be the responsibility of the PUBLISHER/DEVELOPER.

So basically, all MS is charging you for is the right to use stuff you already pay for. Basically like paying taxes, except MS simpily pockets the money, and it doesnt go to bettering the service at all which as MS has said themselves that they dont even need to charge for live but only do it because people will pay for it. I mean what do you think your going to just give up 1 billion dollars a year in revenues cause you wanna be "FAIR" to people?

oh yea, I forgot to mention, the developers see NONE of this money (around 1 billion a year, prolly more). Even if they go out of their way to give you dedicated servers (which they are fully responsible for) they dont even get payed for it!! MS is making all this money and you know what their doing on their end? NOT ****!

Most XBL games use Matchmaking. Matchmaking is done by Xbox Live, not P2P.

Such thing is easy to be done with free XMPP servers for example.

can you maybe give me a list of things that you approve of that i am allowed to buy?

is two ply tp ok? i hate 1 ply... that extra ply costs a few pennies extra a day and i know how you hate to see me spend a few extra pennies to get exactly what i want so i thought i should check with you 1st before i spend em cuz y'know after all you must have earned them if they ae so important to you

Almost every game needs matchmaking. Matchmaking is run by XBL. Everyone's profile is stored on servers run by XBL not ISP provider

MS hosts and runs all of the dedicated servers needed to track states, find and connect you to every game, and continuely track those games, While these things are handled by developers on the other services.

This is why things are changing in the Game industry. Online play will soon cost to play... Pay to play. No more free online play. COD:MW2 developers already said this. If people are willing to pay for online play then they are going to make some money from it. I hope it doesnot happen but I will not be suprised when it does.

EA could charge 50 for a year to play all EA games online, and add some of its own abilities. They can take out some abilities from the game and offer it on their pay to play and its ONLY 40 DOLLARS... not much by what Xbox fans say.

Other big developers could easily follow suit as games cost $$$$ to make and this is one way to recope some of their investment.

I mean, people compare Xbox live to things like internet services, and Cell Phone Plans. At least AT&T and Sprint are providing their own bandwith, their own radiotowers, their own 3g satelites, and all of that.

MS is not providing any of that for you. Almost all of their games (including Halo, and Gears) use P2P, meaning the game is hosted via YOUR 360 (actually, its only hosted by the 360 of the guy who started the game aka the "Host"). Left 4 Dead 2 I believe uses deticated servers (and I think its the only 360 game that does so) and guess what......Valve pays for it. And guess what else.......Valve also pays for the upkeep of these servers, especially the incredibly high electric bill.....and guess what else else? MS makes over $1 Billion a year in revenue, and Valve doesnt see ONE PENNY OF IT!

Yep, pretty much. If MS were to drop the fee, XBL wouldn't change....the only difference would be that MS wouldn't be getting money they didn't earn.

But, lemmings will blindly pay.

EDIT: and there are several games that have Dedicated servers, L4D 1/2, R6V, Frontlines Fuel of war, Shadow Run, Section 8, Modern Combat, etc...

Keep in mind that XBL is helping to keep Microsoft in the Black. Maybe if Sony took some of MS strategies they wouldn't be bleeding money. Understand that Free is NOT always in the best interest of the consumer. If things were to keep going like they are now, Sony would get out of the gaming industry well before Microsoft.

This particular topic has been posted at least 20 different times in the last couple days, we need to move on with this pathetic argument, 50 dollars a year isn't going to kill anyone, and most gamers with any ounce of gamer in them will not mind paying for the best online service on consoles.

The dev's might not actually see the money but they are able to save on development because most of the features are built into live so dev's only have to use M$ api's.

Sorry TC. Since the banning spree, microsoft is holier than thou. No need to prove anything these days. Just ban Everyone suspicious of possibly harming the industry. Done.
People are stupid enough to agree with all this, so they have to pay up.

It's the stupidity that is almost unbearable, but in the end they all let it happen themselves. Just don't get a 360.

Well since 360 updates are about 1000Xs faster than PS3 updates, I would say they are doing something with the money to make it better.

and guess what...WHO CARES!? its 50 a year, i barely notice its gone. and when i do i don't care that it's gone the 11 months other out of the year. jesus, if people havent decided to jump ship and buy a ps3 after the 50th thread thats exactly like this one, whats the point of making yet another? we all know it's not because you're trying to help us. that it's because you have some kinda vendetta against MS for reason. but give it a rest, please.

I'll add FFXI to that.mitu123
In my opinion playing Final Fantasy XI on the 360 would be the biggest ripoff, because you have to pay for Xbox Live and then you still have to pay for a PlayOnline subscription. So you're paying what...almost $20 a month to play a game?

Microsoft don't care about morals they just care about snatching as much money from it's customers as possible.

How is that a problem?

You think Sony or any other company is different? If you do, you fell for their trick.

And that's why I don't play MMOs on 360, unless the subscription is free like Guild Wars.:P

yet xbox live is 3x's better than PSN, go figure.

warmaster670

lol, you wish, the only thing live has better than PSN you can access for free.

You serious? I play on both consoles and know for a FACT xbox live is better then PSN from better communication and organization with friends, less lag, more people have mics, better UI and premium content (Exclusive GTA4, CoD MW2 maps coming sooner, demos usually show up sooner) and overall it's just a better service. What does sony have? Dont even say home it's the most boring thing I've almost ever done.

Microsoft is charging 5 dollars a month for a great service, now if it was a BAD service then yeah I'd complain but if you can spend 200-300 dollars to buy a console you can afford xbox live which is well worth the money. You still have access to basic features besides online gaming if you don't pay and from what I hear sony is going to start offering premium services themselves.

Actually, I think you had to buy a multitap for 4 player gaming on the last 2 Sony consoles (Ps1 & 2) while it was free on both of their competitor's consoles.

I still fail to see what's wrong with it. That's how capitalism works. Don't want it, don't pay for it.
