Hope you guys are ready to upgrade to Scorpio, because ya'lls games on original hardware are about to suffer.

Microsoft's whitepaper categorically rules out ESRAM for Scorpio, while at the same time suggesting that developers continue to support it to ensure strong performance on legacy Xbox One hardware.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-the-race-to-4k-how-scorpio-targets-ultra-hd-gaming

And it looks like you can forget about the upgrade-sauce. Lemmings got rekt with their 4k console upgrade lol Please be hype!

No Zen and they are using checkerboard rendering as well. So the Scorpio will be a PS4 Pro with more RAM and teraflops. I guess that $399 is achievable after all. But goodbye native 4K gaming.

Also likely it's Polaris, like I said a few months ago. That's how they're going to be able to sell it at a decent price point.

This is looking like a more powerful PS4 Pro. Likely to have a Jaguar cpu with polaris gpu. Not the generational leap some, including myself, were expecting.

WOW. Ignorance is a sad thing indeed. You do know that existing game engines can handle this on the backend. You need to try harder next time.

On the face of it, the in-depth discussion of techniques like this may be suggesting that Scorpio isn't the 'true 4K' console that Microsoft marketed it as at E3 2016. But the practical reality is that the document confirms that at least one first-party 1080p title has transitioned relatively easily to native 4K (our best guess would be the Forza Motorsport engine is the technology in question here), and accepts the reality that GPU resources aren't always best spent on precision pixel-work at ultra HD resolutions.

Oh, you mean like this?

PlayStation 4 Pro has offered several titles with high performance modes running on unlocked frame-rates - and notably none of them has managed to double performance consistently from 30fps to 60fps. Microsoft makes no claim that Scorpio is able to do so either and instead suggests a compromise - running GPU elements at twice the speed, while CPU-bound elements are interpolated. A move to far more powerful Zen cores would almost certainly make such advice redundant. We're not aware of any console titles that use this frame-rate upscaing technique - though there was a really impressive Force Unleashed 2 tech demo back in the day - but at the very least, the comment reaffirms our belief that Scorpio's CPU technology has not moved on in step with its GPU.

Digital Foundry says it's only slightly stronger than the PS4 Pro and uses the same type of "4K". Waiting a full year for this mess lol but at least it'll be $399.

Yes it does, like NBA 2k17. But he is also right that 4K gaming on PC has been around before consoles. I think the comment was made in the context of console gaming.

But but but we were promised by the Lems this would be a 4k native juggernaut. I was told I was a rabid cow hater for saying 6 TFlops would not be enough.

Wat happen? Can a lemming please explain? My feeble Cow brain cannot handle the alternative facts.

Well yeah I know that, PlayStation and Xbox can never catch up to the PC, that's obviously but I knew some games on the pro was native 4K.

It's pretty obvious that specs were compromised to get the price down. We are likely getting another Jaguar CPU and a GPU that requires the use of checkerboard rendering to hit 4K. I've questioned in the past how Microsoft was gonna get the price below $600, and now we know how. They are releasing a console that is slightly more powerful than the PS4 Pro. A bigger difference that the PS4 and Xbox One, but not what we thought we were getting when the console was labeled a "premium product."

A PS fanboy making a thread to bash a console that hasn't even been officially revealed to the public yet. Xbox fanboys running defense on their favourite brand. And PC aficionados hopping in to remind everyone that they're the master race(which they are but that's for another topic). While the rest of us are having a good laugh about everything that's written here. All is good in the world then:)

My work here is done, then. Balance returned to the Force and all that. In System Wars, may the odds be ever in your favour.

Live long and prosper my friend:)

More speculations, I thought everyone agreed on ESRAM being dropped out of the picture already? high bandwidth gddr5 > esram+ddr3 on high resolution easily and no esram is not required for compatibility with xbox one games. That being said very disappointing if it's another Jaguar pos.

"But to clear, this is speculation based on what we now know about new Radeon features open to Microsoft. The whitepaper we've seen - dated to just after Scorpio's E3 reveal - only confirms no ESRAM, boosted L2 cache and support for memory compression technology. Beyond that, all we have to go on is Microsoft's stated 320GB/s bandwidth, eight CPU cores - plus a motherboard rendering strongly suggesting 12GB of GDDR5 memory. How the final spec will shape up remains to be seen, but from the whitepaper details to the Vega enhancements available to Microsoft, we should be a seeing a highly capable 4K contender."

WTF?

Why even write the article based on a white paper release after the initial reveal?
