Poll MS responds to 48% decline in Xbox revenue. They say it's "Current-gen fatigue". Do you Agree? (64 votes)

I agree, a 50% reduction in overall revenue a year and a half before a new generation starts sounds about right. 16%
I agree, I expect Sony and Nintendo to be experiencing similar drops in game revenue. 11%
I agree, current-gen fatigue is the main reason for this reduction 1ry 1/2 before next gen, everyone is waiting to buy for Scarlet. 6%
I disagree, end of the gen sales decline, but not normally by this margin. MS are over simplifying the reasons behind this drop. 20%
I disagree, Just look at the Amazon Prime Day Sales where Switch and PS4's were selling out and exclusives dominated top 100. 13%
So generations is the a crutch for Xbox failing sales to MS now? ? How bout, Xbox aint got no games and people abandoning the sinking ship. 34%

Never mind the MS once said they wanted X to lead the way to end generations...

Q: ...There was a very short gap between the Xbox One and the Xbox One S, and we're probably talking an even shorter gap before Project Scorpio. Do you see a future of console upgrades continually happening?

Is this the last console generation?

Greenberg: I think it is. ... For us, we think the future is without console generations; we think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware -- we're making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio.

https://www.engadget.com/2016/08/17/microsoft-aaron-greenberg-qa-project-scorpio-vr/

...and haven taken all necessary steps to ensure their platforms within the xbox ecosystem don't have generations going forward, how can "generations" even be a factor when speaking on the performance of "xbox" revenue?

But this is their new stance on why xbox has seen a nearly 50% decline in xbox revenue: Seen below.

Microsoft attributes 48% decline in Xbox revenue to current-gen fatigue

Microsoft has released its Q4 fiscal year 2019 financials, reporting a decrease in gaming and hardware revenue as the end of the current console life-cycle looms.

Microsoft reported its Q4 results of fiscal year 2019, noting a decline in gaming revenue and Xbox One hardware, ***software and services***.

Gaming revenue declined 10% year-over-year (yoy) to $233 million, with Xbox software and services revenue down 3% yoy.

Xbox One hardware revenue declined 48%, primarily due to a decrease in volume of consoles sold. Microsoft attributed the declines to being on the late end of this console generation.

https://www.vg247.com/2019/07/19/xbox-one-hardware-revenue-decline/

Are they right about the reason for xbox's decline in revenue?

And are console "generations" even a thing for MS at this point?

And despite being contrary to what MS argued in 2016, will a new generation of consoles be all that's needed for MS regain their sales momentum for the xbox ecosystem?

Yep, I agree. This gen is winding down so sales are naturally going to drop. The Switch is fine because it came out more recently so it’s new and different.

It's not fatigue, MS already confirms to the public at E3 2019 they are working next-gen console aka Xbox Scarlet and who in their mind would buy Xbox One now? We all know Scarlet will play Xbox One games, (BC) why go buy Xbox One this year?

Every major consoles go through the decline whenever a new console has been announce, no surprise Xbox One is declining. This was the worst generation for MS because even the original Xbox had better library of exclusive games, I really hope they come out heavy loaded when Scarlet arrives.

Exactly. The real fatigue is OPs obsession with the Xbox and goodness me, the essay writing.

You've brought up a excellent point that I can't deny...at your request:

/

To counter MS's own PR about the reason for Xbox's decline in revenue, I'd like to submit Sony's Financial report for the same timeline to add further perspective on determination of MS's view of their own sales.

Sony 2018-19 Financial Year Results – *Most Profitable Year Ever Powered by PlayStation*

Yesterday Sony (NYSE:SNE 55.1 1.27%) saw a significant share price increase of 7.67%, or $3.58, taking the company to a share price of $50.24. This is on the back of the company revealing its best year ever in terms of profit. Over the current fiscal year, Sony brought in ¥8.66 trillion in sales & operating revenue, with net income hitting ¥916 billion.

Sony’s Entertainment: Games, Music & Films are Going Strong

*Without any shadow of a doubt, the strongest area for the company is their Games & Network Services.*Driven by the success of the PlayStation 4, which by December 31st, 2018 had sold through 91.6 million consoles, the video game section is going strong. During the 2018-19 financial year, 17.8m PlayStation 4 consoles were sold, a fall from the previous year’s 19m. This is to be expected as the current console generation reaches its sixth year.

Alongside the number of consoles sold comes software sales. As of December 31st, 2018, a total of 876m units of full console software have been sold. This does not include add-on content, which also generates revenue for the company. During the current year, 257.6m units of full software were sold, helping to propel the division to the heights it has reached. This can be attributed to a number of very successful titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, FIFA 19 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Not to mention exclusives like Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War, the latter of which was developed internally by Sony.

Also benefitted by the increased sales of consoles and games comes the subscription-based PlayStation Plus. As of the end of the financial year, there were 36.4m subscribers to the service, a 2.2m increase on last years 34.2m and 10m above the 26.4m two years ago. There are no figures given for the PlayStation Now subscription service. Total sales for games came in at ¥2.31tn with an income of ¥311.1bn.

....Despite the lowering of hardware sales, the company is confident in only a slight lowering of revenue and income as a result of software sales and the consistent popularity of the PlayStation Plus subscription service....

The last option is the real deal. I'mma vote to see where we stand.

Edit:

I voted for that due to being the closest option. I cannot guarantee that it is close to correct.

@Pedro: And as for PS4, Sony hasn't officially confirm to the public PS5 just yet despite we the gamers know it'll be releasing next year (as far as we know) and no news of declining either unless Sony told the public about PS5, we would've hear something about PS4's declining by now.

Sales of the PS4 has declined year to year but they still did well overall. Unlike Sony, MS made an official announcement of their new system and the release period. I wouldn't recommend anyone purchase a console now if they don't need to especially with the newer systems next year being fully BC.

False

Sony actually officially confirmed PS5 BEFORE MS's E3 2019 with Mark Cerny's PS5 spec and info reveal.

Infact MS's announcement of Scarlet was virtually a 1 to 1 repeat of the information Mark Cerny delivered about PS5 nearly 2 months earlier.

*Cheesy MS Scarlet video*

So you want a video from Sony just because MS did a video?

Even though Mark Cerny provided the EXACT same information MS spoke about in that clip you've presented here but only 2 months earlier?

It doesn't work like that ? unfortunately.

An official announcement is an official announcement no matter the format.

Your odd rebuttal and specific request to allow Mark's interview to be considered an official announcement isn't helped by the fact that literally EVERY major video game outlet reported on the announcement confirming it.

But lets go beyond that, even major news outlets reported on this PS5 announcement...

Sony reveals first details on next-generation PlayStation 5 console

April 22, 2019 / 9:30 PM / CBS News

Sony is now *officially* the first at the starting gate for the next generation of video game hardware. The company unveiled the first details for its next-generation console in a Wired interview with PlayStation 4 lead system architect Mark Cerny....

The PlayStation 5 will be based in part on PS4 architecture, which has the added benefit of making it backwards compatible, allowing it to play games made for PS4. This is said to be a "gentle" transition to the next generation, to the point that some games are expected to be released across both platforms. It will also use physical media...

... this next console will have one big departure from prior ones: a solid-state drive (SSD), customized to take advantage of the hardware specs. This takes the place of a traditional hard-disk drive, which is slower, louder, and less power-efficient than SSDs. To showcase the advantages of this, Cerny demonstrated a loading screen from the 2018 video game Marvel's Spider-Man. A PS4 Pro loaded a particular section in roughly 15 seconds, while a development kit used by PS5 game developers performed the same task in under one second. Cerny added that this can also impact how quickly the world can be rendered, which developers could then use to their advantage. As Cerny noted, building the hardware around the SSD results in much better performance than simply inserting a stock SSD into an existing hardware framework like the PlayStation 4.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/playstation-5-everything-we-know-as-sony-reveals-first-details-about-next-generation-playstation-5-console/

Sorry ? It doesn't get much more official than that I'm afraid.

So EVERYONE knows about PS5 now. Perhaps more than Scarlet.

Feel free to spin another argument if you like.

You've rolled snake eyes with this confusing requirement you created for something to be considered "official" for Sony.

Actually, according to the English vocabulary, this is what a formal or official announcement looks like.

announcement

A public statement containing information about an event that has happened or is going to happen

https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/announcement

To announce something officially or formally - thesaurus

announce

verb

to make a public or officialstatement, especially about a plan, decision, or something that has happened

https://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/thesaurus-category/american/to-announce-something-officially-or-formally

There isn't anything here about a, video but as long as these requirements are met, it counts as well.

Unfortunately we can't just reinvent the meaning for words on a whelm, even as convenient as it might seem to you.

It counts as an official announcement as much as any other where a party is making a public statement about future plans something.

How many here actually read Cerny's interview from the source, cause all I've heard is other reporters report on what someone reported. If you want to pretend that's the same as the the people who make the system and games telling you their plans and how they do it, then you're in denial.

Sony is so scared of their own shit, they didn't want this shit interview on their own new dumb show, just like they won't put their own games on their shitty PS Now, cause don't stand by it.

Lol this thread is funny. I'm 100 percent certain that PS was profitable as well as switch, so I am gonna have to say no, MS, that's not why xbox is not profitable.

In fact, there's a link in the thread. I guess one has to be a fanboy to point it out though.

More or less the same information I've already provided to you in this thread.

I mean if you want you can pull up the Wired article where Mark Cerny can be directly quoted if that makes you feel better?

lol funny how the narrative of this thread is trying to be spun to weather PS5 was actually announced or not, when this board couldn't shut up about it for about a month and a half until MS announced their own next gen system at E32019.

That's a pretty comical and desperate stance to take considering everyone acknowledged Cermy's announcement of PS5 prior to the creation of this thread.

I guess if everyone else in the world unsee Cermy's announcement the same way people in this thread apparently have then we could work with that theory, but I don't see that happening.

Lol this thread is funny. I'm 100 percent certain that PS was profitable as well as switch, so I am gonna have to say no, MS, that's not why xbox is not profitable.

In fact, there's a link in the thread. I guess one has to be a fanboy to point it out though.

This is to be expected as the current console generation reaches its sixth year.

....Despite the lowering of hardware sales, the company is confident in only a slight lowering of revenue and income as a result of software sales and the consistent popularity of the PlayStation Plus subscription service....

So in other words you don't have any links in which Sony or PlayStation officially announced the PS5. Gotcha.

No I don't really agree with that. I hear from gamers everywhere that they don't expect much from the next generational leap, and that games look OK already. There is less hope for future improvements, and less of a 'need' to upgrade I think, in the minds of gamers.

Is that because of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X stretching the gen thin, or diminishing returns, or developers using more power primarily for prettier screenshots, or Nintendo no longer focusing on power? I think it's a bit of all of that.

I think boxgetsrekt should buy the game he's been shilling all week (Spider-Man) instead of worrying about Xbox.

Oh that's right he's as fake as his current alt lol.

Yep it's gen fatigue. Nothing at all to do with that genius Phil Spencer taking the whole generation to work out his console is actually supposed to have games.

Nope, can't be that.

I agree. I've never been as fatigued with consoles as this gen = current gen fatigue.

Xbox is just sad. Only die hard lems can sit around defending a console with no compelling software for it.

it's not been a great year.

the gen peaked with rdr2 imo. at busy moments, particularly in towns, it brought my ps4 to its knees. same thing happened at the end of last gen with gtav. my 360 really struggled with it at times. when you get a game that clearly pushes the hardware past its limit that's your sign it's time for next gen.

that, or rockstar make really unoptimised games, take your pick.

regardless of which, roll on next gen

A little from Column A, a little from Column B. It's been noticed before that Rockstar games tend to be pretty bad at optimizing, and end up relying partially on hardware limits to keep them in check.

Notably, with PCs, you can't rely on hardware limits; different PCs are going to have vastly different limits, and hardware limits for a PC will crash the machine easily if met (remember, part of the machine needs to be dedicated to running the operating system). One theory I've seen is that Rockstar doesn't convert many of their games for PC, and had to delay so long with GTA V, because of their terrible optimization and the resulting problems getting the games to even run properly on PCs.

EA also had a period where they had pretty terrible optimization, resulting in one game becoming temporarily famous for destroying state-of-the-art graphics cards and crashing computers (Sims 3, early in its life cycle).

Well i use my X1X as a Forza machine and for multiplats, but I am not surprised at all by the declining in revenue, they need exclusives.

I understand why they port all games to PC (a lot more money), but they will never be able to compete with Sony or Nintendo when it comes to unique games.

yeah people are fatigued on xbox one we haven't gotten a AAA game in years

Microsoft is the world's largest company by market cap, yet they don't want to invest in some AAA exclusives for Xbox. That's how little faith they have in Xbox.

Well for one they no longer make games exclusive to Xbox and you would have had a point if they didn't acquired 6 studios in the past 2 years and created one.

@baelnergal: yeah come to think about it i vaguely remember a rumour that the rdr1 codebase was an unoptimised shitshow, and that was a reason why it didn't come to pc
