MS doesnt understand that Japanese ppl play only their DS and their handehelds, they dont care for "gaming" or "online"

They even rejected Sony PS3 and only sold in Japan by 2.42 acording to Vg chartz(iknow i know, they are 100% reliable) and 360 sold only 0.68 mils.

Doing a half price aint gonna help them in Japan,Handhelds..they play pokemon all day, they dont want gears of war or God of war.

Pokemon ^_^

So MS should give up,They dont have much of chance,DS got japan lock down, and PSP is doing Very good in japan

The japanese won't be playing handhelds forever, you know. MS/Sony will eventually crack the console market.

I miss the times when Western games were considered "cool" wait, that has never been the case :|

Its a dead horse, MS keep flogging it. Why? Arrogance? Racial hatred? Cookie? They should focus on taking Europe, which is culturally ready to ditch the ps3 (which is collecting dust as i type this) and move on to something less mediocre.

My Mum always used to tell me that I shouldn't talk about things I know nothing about.

Believe it or not there's more to Japan than Pokemon and DS. Japan doesn't care about online? Given that Japan has the highest internet speeds than any other country in the world with the U.S. sorely dragging behind, not mention it is Asian regions driving the concept of micro-transactions in online gaming. You have no idea how popular a number of the online Japanese MMORPGs are and internet community sites like Mixi.

If Japan doesn't care about online then you should probably tell Nintendo to stop their advertising campaign which focuses on the Wii's online capabilities. It's obviosly a waste of time right?

The reason the DS and PSP are doing so well Vs the big consoles has alot to do with the Japanese economy not being too hot right now. Many people are holding out on buying new next-gen consoles without knowing who the clear winner is first. Not to mention all the top of the range gear you need to really get the most out of your next-gen hardware. widescreen HDTVs, Surround sound. A DS or a PSP is a much simpler option.

And no Microsoft should not give up just as it is beginning to make headway. The only thing I agree with is that cutting the price isn't going to save the 360. The price is not the issue. It's games and developer support. The reason the 360 has suddenly been selling so well recently is because of games like Tales of Vesperia and Infinite Undiscovery along with Square Enix's recent game announcements and support for the 360. Just as any console in the U.S. would have a hard time competing with other consoles if it didn't have significant backing from EA and the Madden franchise on its side. The same is true in Japan for Square Enix Japans biggest publisher and Final Fantasy the worlds biggest franchise.

Microsoft has made terrific headway in Japan this generation. Expecting it to suddenly oust Sony and Nintendo from their thrones is a bit much but Microsoft have shown that the 360 and the Xbox brand is not something that can be ignored. If they continue progressing as well as they are now it sets them up with a very good starting point for the next generation to give Sony and Ninty some very serious competition on their home turf.

From what I heard, the PS3 is picking up steam in the European nations and is closing on the installed base of the 360 there.

MajinFix

how can you tell what 128 million people care about and not.

PS3 was rejected becouse it doesn't have games that are out, only titles "coming soon"

Microsoft has the money to finance the loss in gameing industry in japan, so I don't see why they should give up its a 128 million people market it doesn't make sense, but I think that part of your post tells us something about you, and it tells us you are weak person, you give up on something without even trying even a minimal risk of loosing anything is makeing you give up becouse its not worth it to you or atleast you think so.

Wrong, it's just common sense.

The first Xbox was an unbelievable FAILURE in Japan just like the 360 is a failure. Maybe MS has some better luck with their next xbox but now they lose money in Japan. But hey MS has a big cash cow so they probably won't give up there. But that doesn't change the fact that most Japanese hate the Xbox.

And PS3 is much more popular than 360 in Europe. But atleast 360 has a chanche of winning in Europe...but in Japan hell no.

I beg to differ. With a little solid Market research, M$ should be able to get a true grasp on the Japanese market.

Over 2 and a half years in the market and thanks to Microsoft's market research team the 360 is selling a whopping 3k a week

Everyone give a round of applause for Microsoft's research team because they have been doing a stellar job so far

Perhaps if you based your comments on facts and not stereotypes your comments might come across as somewhat less xenophobic and redundant. Also please stop putting so many commas in your sentences. Are you having an asthma attack or something?

Um,no?

There is minor, I repeat, MINOR evidence that Japanese people only support Japanese products. There is much LARGER evidence that this is in fact an overblown lie and stereotype. Go ahead, scan the internet. You can spend an hour and find a scant handful of sources backing that stereotype, none from any credible sources. Believe me, I've tried as I once believed this too. To my chagrin, I found out through research that I was mistaken.

Nah, I think by the end of 2009 with their implementation of the new XBL avatar system and even further reduction of the price of admission for both the console and many many great games by that time can be had for pennies on the dollar; the 360 will really take off in Japan.

Just a hunch. ;)

You didn't answer my question.

What do I, as a 360 owner, GAIN from Microsoft giving up?

Can't answer?

I can tell what I'll lose. I'll lose Japanese support and software variety.

Microsoft is a multi-billion dollar corporation, so what if they are not selling units in Japan. I'll be reaping the benefits when I play Last Remnant this holiday season.

Thats the problem with you fanboys, putting some corporation before you.

Consoles are obviously a thing of the past in Japan, at least "cutting edge" ones anyway. Handhelds provide a way for people to game on the move and with a lot of Japanese gamers moving on and growing up not all of them have time to sit down and play a game for 6 hours every night, it's way easier for them to game during a commute or on a lunch break.

Not complaining or anything, but wiring up a place the size of California (Japan) isn't as challenging as, say, wiring up something in the neighborhood of almost 10M sq km, with tons of cities, a couple mountain ranges, and a lot of dead space in between--IOW, the US's lower 48 has a lot of ground to cover--Alaska can probably be safely disregarded for the most part, and Hawaii's relatively tiny.

Then present this research, would you? Meanwhile, I can cite other evidence (such as a couple mainstream manga) that put derisive stereotypes on gaijin.

No they shouldn't, and your reasoning for why is absolutely laughable.

Umm... maybe this was unclear, but my research DIDN'T reveal evidence. That was my point. How can I present evidence that doesn't exist? How do I show you non-existent articles?

As for your manga thing showing derisive stereotypes... no one is disputing that racism exists. White people in America sometimes are racist towards asians... doesn't stop them from buying products made in Taiwan.

http://www.speedmatters.org/

That site which campaigns for faster internet speeds often does reports comparing the US to other countries. It also goes into reasons why the US is so far behind the rest of the developed world. Indeed the sheer size of the US is one of the factors. Especially concerning more recent innovations in Japan and South Korea where everything thing is currently switching from ADSL to Hikari fibre. Max you can get out of ADSL is 50/60MB. Hikari fibre can go upto 100MB but it depends on your location. Using Hikari fiber would be almost impossible in the US.

But Canada still ranks higher than the US. According to the most recent report caried out by that site (August 2008) highest average internet speed of any state in the US is 7MB while the median speed in Japan and SOuth Korea is now around 60MB. It's cheaper too.

But there's alot more to it than simply the size of the country. You can read up about it on that site. It has much more to do with the way US markets work.

Here's a link to the actual report.

http://www.speedmatters.org/document-library/sourcematerials/cwa_report_on_internet_speeds_2008.pdf

"The median download speed for the nation was 2.3 megabits per second (mbps). In Japan, the median download speed is 63 mbps, or 30 times faster than the U.S. The U.S. also trails South Korea at 49 mbps, Finland at 21 mbps, France at 17 mbps, and Canada at 7.6 mbps. The median upload speed from the speedmatters.org test was just 435 kilobits per second (kbps). At this rate, it will take the United States more than 100 years to catch up with current Internet speeds in Japan."

This is a campaign website. For some reason, this website makes me think of the Net Neutralitists. I'd rather find information from a site that is more neutral, with nothing to gain from the argument. I still say sheer size is the major factor combined with population distribution (This explains the Canada angle--though Canada has a large area, most of its population is concentrated in the south--in the provinces. The US's is distributed a bit more evenly.) Plus we have an inherent distrust of government-introduced initiatives unless the situation turns really desperate (sorry, it's in our history).

PS. There's also a sizable near-Luddite population that simply replies, "What's the big deal?" IOW, they don't care about high-speed internet access since the Internet doesn't really matter to them. They're like long-term cigarette smokers--they smoke "cancer sticks" and are proud of it because it's what they want to do.

[QUOTE="FFXIII360"]Sony should give up in AmericaFFXIII360

No company should give up.

Anyways, you don't make sense as the PS3 has been outselling the 360 In America all year and starting the end of last year.

They still should give up

...

so they should give up and make less money?...

The fanboy is strong with you...

Either way I think we can safely agree that the original posters claim that "Japan doesn't care about online" is complete nonsense. Which was why I brought it up in the first place. I'm not trying to knock the US for its bad internet. Just the poster for his bad reasoning.

NM. It's just that relations between Asian nations (for example, between Japan and South Korea) can get tense at times, and there are some bits of animosity at times between them (to the point that Koreans, for example, are reluctant to buy Japanese products--until recently, Japanese cultural products weren't allowed by law). It's a tough monkey to get off one's back.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that you can't completely rule out nationalism or foreign distrust. And Japan has a very strong sense of national identity (I'm pretty sure no one will argue this point), and this can't help but have an effect when foreign products come into play.

YOU ARE TAINTED AND DIRTY!

PS3 and 360 arent too far behind in Japan. In fact the Vesperia + price drops + undiscovery should shake things upo yet again.

Plus, its better to be last then to NOT BE THERE AT ALL!

To be fair, sometimes it's better not to race than to be exposed for the lumbering idiot you really are. If being there is causing you to be even worse off than you would be from simply not being there at all...well, to quote a line, "the only winning move is not to play."

That said, I think Microsoft does turn some profit from its work in Japan, making it worthwhile no matter how meager.
