* I posted this on the PS3 boards but they would rather deny there's a problem to prevent lemmings ragging on them than actually help me. I'd like to try my luck here in SW >_> *

I KNOW THIS IS A GIANT WALL OF TEXT BUT PLEASE HELP ME :)

I'm one of the lucky people who got their PS3 messed up after the 2.40 update. Here's Sony's response and solutions they have at the moment. (they're working on it at the moment.) If you don't want to read this, just skip to the end of the page where it says "What I wanted to Ask you". The emails are for people who have the problem.

What I Sent Sony (in a nutshell):

I downloaded the 2.40 update recently, and I just finished installing after downloading it. Like
all the other updates before, the PS3 reboots and shows the wavy lines with "Sony Entertainment" to
the side then shows the User list. The "Sony Entertainment" comes up and the wavy lines come up and
so I wait for the User List to appear but the PS3 just shows the wavy lines and stays there. I
turned off the system by putting my finger in the reset for 10 seconds. I try to turn on my PS3 with
the PS button of my SIXAXIS controller, but it doesn't work. So I walk up to the PS3, turn it on by
hand, and still, it does the same as before.

What I Got From Sony: (NOT FULL EMAIL- it's buried with links - just all the important stuff)

Thank you for writing us.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. We would like to recommend the
following PlayStation Knowledge Center article(s) that may help resolve the problem:

BLAH BLAH BLAH all these links to the knowledge base BLAH BLAH BLAH

- Install the Latest Firmware Update

To check what version of the System Software is currently installed on your PLAYSTATION 3, from the
XMB menu go to [Settings] > [System Settings] > [System Information]. The system will display the
System Software version number. You can visit the following link to determine whether you have the
latest version installed.

http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/About/SystemUpdate

If these steps do not resolve your issue, you may submit your own Exchange Order using our
In-Warranty Self Service Exchange for quick and easy processing on the Internet. Please note this
is only available for United States residents, must have purchased your system within the last
twelve (12) months, and have a valid Proof of Purchase (i.e., store receipt). Other restrictions
may apply. Please visit our In-Warranty Self Service Exchange page for more information.

What I just found on the Sony Website:

http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=516&p_created=1197592013&p_sid=UEQ7MR7j&p_a

UPDATE: 7/2/2008, We are aware of a limited number of consumers experiencing an issue with installing firmware 2.40 on PLAYSTATION 3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to enabling the community and XMB access features delivered in the 2.40 update. In order to further assess the issue, we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up. The Knowledge Center will be updated with information as it becomes available; please check back here for further details.

What I wanted to ask you guys:

Should I send my PS3 in and risk my PS3 from losing all its memory or getting a new PS3?

OR

Should I take out the hard drive surely losing all my memory, I just own 3 games, MGS4, GTA4, and COD4? I have no problem about losing the memory much but I'd rather not, and can someone tell me the steps to reformat my HDD? And what are the consequences?

OR

I can just wait it out and see if Sony can find a solution to this problem.

ALSO

If anyone else has a solution PLEASE post it up. I'd really appreciate it. And is there a way I can download the old 2.36 update even though i cannot access the XMB?

Send it in. Possibility of losing save data is much better than it being a certainty (if you format the HDD youself).

I think the PS3 board should be able to help you more than SW. I recommend sending it in though.

If you know someone with a PS3, see if you can borrow their HDD from them. By removing the HDD alone you will not lose any memory. Slide the borrowed HDD in and see if your system starts. If it does start, then I assume your HDD is corrupt and I'm pretty sure you're out of luck as far as your saved stuff. Other than what I just said, I can't help any further.

Bingo, not to mention an extended warranty is then applied to your PS3 for 90 days. And I don't believe there is anything Sony can do through a patch or download as we can not get past said wavy line.

If you open up your ps3that will probably void the warranty and they might refuse to fix it. IMO it is safer just to send it in to Sony for repairs.

This is in SW....why?

Do you have a USB drive? For like 3 cents you can get one, and backup your PS3 game saves...then you won't lose game progress....

TC, did you have auto load game disc enabled, or themes loads? Probably not related to what caused that error, but I would like to know. I have neither and my 2.4 update went without a hitch. Hope you get this straightened out man, good luck.

Send it to Sony. If they know a magical way to keep your data while still fixing it, then great. If you reformat it, you lose your data for sure (just as someone else said).

Hmm, I had themes loads at one time but i returned it back to the original just recently before I dowloaded it. and about the game disc, I changed the settings to when you just turn on the ps3 and thers a game in the disc holder thing it does not start the game, but if it's turned on already, and i put a disc in it does auto starts. Hoe that disnt confuse you.

Thanks. You explained it pefectly. I thought it might have something to do with autoloading where the PS3 starts up after the update and tried to boot from the disc instead of the HDD, and then gets all freaked out. My other theory was that the themes loaded with the XMB might cause a memory issue. I guess its something else. Thanks. Good luck.

I guess it could be worse, apparently if 2.4 works correctly on your PS3 it automatically turns you into someone who treats everyone that has a problem like dirt.

Did they warn anyone about this in the end user agreement???

Every guy asking for help is getting called names and treated like some kind of Judas.

Anyway I say call for the coffin and send it in that looks like the safest course to try and save your games data.

Wow. I was really expecting some crazed fanboy to come in here and say something like "I'll tell you what you should do, sell your ps3 and buy a 360!" But no, people are actually being helpful. Good job SW, I am proud of you.

Correct. Infact before I started removing my HDD and cleaning it with compressed air, my console would freeze up on occassions. Since I have been cleaning the HDD regularly, I can't remember the last time it froze on me. I can't believe how much dust collects up in that thing after about a month! My console will most likely freeze tonight now that I'm mentioning it.

Actually, the PS3's firmware and Operating System stay in the system, not the HDD. Kinda like how a PC keeps all the motherboard settings separate from the HDD.

So, reformatting wouldn't really solve the issue if the Firmware is corrupted/broken. You would reformat, lose everything, and still be unbootable.

The firmware is not broken. The problem at the moment is certain sets of old data are not getting on well with the Firmware, at least according to Kotaku's article.

Your totally right, when i first posted this in the PS3 forums it had zero reponses, and at the top of the board was a topic called "sign if 2.40 didn't mess you up". >_> shows how welcoming the Ps3 boards are to people who actually have problems with their ps3s. Guess a lot of trolls and lemmings to post stories of fake ps3s blowing up? And so I tried my luck with SW and I got a lot of helpful posts so far. Thanks to everyone who posted.

It's all compatibility issues between certain pieces of data and 2.40, they should've tested it more.

Since they have pulled the update sony obviously know the problem is thier update, yet they expct those who have bricked system to just suffer as a result of thier mistake. Not cool.Marka1700
They are fixing mine for free actually. Outside of the warranty period as well.

Yeah the PS3 forum here isn't really helpful at all. I usually post topics on Gamefaq for PS3 questions and get faster responses.

Since you don't really mind losing your saves, you might aswell send it in and let Sony handle it. Actually since you got this 2.40 bug, all your saves are pretty much gone either way. So I would rather have Sony handle it than you trying to fix it yourself, because who knows, something else might become the problem

Good luck though. Hope everything turn out ok.

Hopefully you have other systems to keep you busy on the meantime.

My advice would be to reformat if you can by yourself, if you have a laptop, rip out it's HDD and put the PS3 one in, most systems will automatically format a HDD like that.

Since you have very few games, just reformat the hdd yourself. It takes all of 5 minutes. It just means you lost your game saves. Lemmings are trying to blow this "bricking" thing up. Its not bricking the system, its just corrupting some (very few, in fact a lot less than the 360's dashboard update did) hard drives. It is very easily fixable and people need to realize that they dont need to send it to Sony to get it fixed. Its a shame you will lose your saves, but its better than losing the system.

Thanks for everyone who responded and gave their opinions on what to do!

So I've decided to send it in to Sony. But not by mail, I know someone who works with Sony Repair for TV's, Computers, and stuff . I'll see if I can give it to him and see if he knows someone who can fix my PS3. That way I can avoid the mailing and shipping costs.

Thanks everyone! :D You were all very helpful.
