Im 31 years old, been gaming since my Atari 2600 (which I still have and it still works) and video games for me have always been a relaxation activitie that I put one step higher than watching a movie. They offer me a cognitive challenge that I crave. That said, I enjoy them BECAUSE I dont have to get up and move around. I have a busy career and a busy home life and when I turn my console on its because I like being hunkered down under a blanket shooting nazi zombies from the comfort of my comfy chair. I am in great shape, I work out, I eat right, im active... I dont want to move during video game time. I recently purchased the wii for my son and the only 2 games I like playing are Ninja Turtles Smash Up and Wii Mario Bros because I dont have to move my arms. I dont want to hold links sword or shoot master chiefs gun, I dont want to do whatever it is we're supposed to do with sonys sex ball device, I just want to sit and play. My biggest fear in this industry is that they may alienate a group of people who grew up enjoying games a certain way. I hope they make motion subtle and keep me in my chair.

I don't know many gamers that have been gaming since I was a kid, that doesn't move while playing games. I remembering watching many people jump with Mario. :)

I tend to agree. Im going to be 39 this year and have been playing since 1980. I dont mind the Wii bowling or something fun and simple, but I wll refuse to play new games if they ditch the standard controller. I have almost 20 consoles and going on 1500 games I can fall back on. So whatever happens happens I guess.

Uh, my mom would put her hands in the air while holding the controler to try and get mario to jump... I would press a button.

I agree... and I dont even mean to come off stuffy and old, I just simply consume video games for particular reasons. Im sure when these 15-20 year old kids start a career that has them constantly moving on their feet for 10 hours a day the last thing they'll want to do when they come home is run in place down a hallway or slay a dragon with a wand... I just dont want them to forget about the large demographic that was playing games before their new "target audience" wasnt even a glint in daddys eye.

I've been gaming since the 2600 also, but I enjoy getting up to play Wii Sports every so often. I still prefer to sit down and relax with a classic controller of some kind, but for me, a little change is a good thing, as long as it doesn't become the norm (and I don't think it will).

How do you feel towards simplier motion controls? That require a flick of a wrist every now and again.

Many motion control games on the Wii don't require you do anything more than point at the screen, and rotate/flick your risk or w/e. You can have your arms resting at your sides and pull off these motions. Hardly takes effort. Think about how much effort it takes to move your mouse around to point at stuff on your screen. That's about the same effort you put into the quality Wii games.

Just make sure and stay away from games that advertise getting off the couch, or fitness games.

It's a misconception that every Wii game requires that. It's just an advertising trick to get more people to buy it.

As long as its responsive Im totally cool with it... Im SOOOO much more interested in them INTEGRATING motion along side standard controls then making me do everything physically. quite frankly Im never going to feel like im IN the game no matter how much motion they make me do, because im actually IN my living room. I feel more immersed cognitively under my blanket watching a story unfold then I do sweating like a pig.

No one is forced to buy these peripherals. I think standard gaming is still going to be around for a very very long time and personally I feel will never die. Motion controls are a gimmick and if a large group of people think it's awesome, then it will stay around. I don't believe it will ever dominate.

I guess I'm like everyone else (even though I'm not an adult). I play video games in my free time, and I like to relax when playing them. However, some games on my Wii I don't mind moving to. Take Super Mario Galaxy/2. The easy motions are novel and overall improve the experience without wearing you out. I don't mind pointing the remote at the screen for FPSs. In fact, I like it better than a standard controller. But I still, in the end, prefer games where I'm not flailing my arms madly around.

You're going to have to be more specific. I mean, 3d games became the norm back in the 90's, with games like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Doom, Quake, etc. None of those require any movement. Or maybe you mean stereoscopic 3d. The games are still either 2-d or 3-d, depending on the perspective of the game, and just have a simulated 3d visual effect applied. It doesn't actually change anything about the gameplay, so why would that require moving around? I guess you must be talking about 3d gaming, as in some kind of holographic projection, which could range from anything like the chess game Chewy and R2 are playing in Star Wars (no moving) to something like the holodeck in Star Trek, which is a full 3-d VR and much more than just a video game. I guess that one will require moving around, but we are nowhere near that technology yet.

i feel for you mate, i am in the same boat, 35 years old been gaming since the spectrm 48k, i was never keen on even light guns, i can't see myself gaming if they move completely to motion controls, sucks big time, but i guess we can't game forever, trouble is, since i gave up drinking it's my only hobbie, and i can't for the life of me think of another hobbie that remotely interests me apart from orienteering, but i will probably be too old for that by then.

Yet you move your fingers to play with a standard control

This feels like 2006, i remember threads where people would say they play video games to relax and what not.

Heres what i dont get and you even say it. How can you play video games to relax and then say you play Nazi Zombies? Ive played L4D and Nazi Zombies and those games are anything but that. Im on the edge of my seat alert, constantly scouting around, active on the mic and my heart racing as i panic about whats around the corner.

Fact is, unless you're only playing Endless Ocean, Flower or something of that sort you do not play games to relax after a long day at work. We play games for fun, nothing more. Everything i listed above is a sensation we enjoy when playing games. What you're saying is like the arguments people use against PC gaming (comfortability).

Truth is, you either dont want to learn something new, or you just dont like motion controls. Theres nothing else behind it.

My problem with motion controls is that my entertainment center is in a loft, which is a rather small sort of space. I am moving soon, and will look for a new place that has an ample living area, but currently, I fear that I won't be able to play many of the games I've seen for Kinect. (Not that any of them are very compelling. But I do want to be able to try the Star Wars game.)

Even for the Wii, the games that do motion controls well are few and far between.

My hope is that eventually, devs will find control schemes that feel natural and not contrived. It may be motion controls only, or a combination between motion and traditional button-based controls. We just have to let the technology evolve.

I have yet to find a Wii game that is tiring so I wouldn't worry mate, hell I have even mastered playing pretty much everything (except a couple of Wii sport games) while laying down side ways on the sofa  where there is a will... the worst I have experience is you will need to sit up and forward sometimes with a game you are unfamiliar with (not a big deal, unless you are knackered but yeah...).

I'm 20 and i've been gaming since I was two years old (and I remember A LOT of the games). That said, I don't mind moving in Videogames, it makes for great activity and creates a much better party atmosphere. Do I want all games to require moving? No, but thankfully all indications suggest that's not going to happen anyway.

Then don't play the games with motion controls. Standard controllers will never die out, and they will keep making games for the core audience. So no need to worry.

I totally agree with TC. Its funny, I was actually talking to a good friend of mine about this and we had the same opinion. To think that these motion controls will be the standard in gaming is a tad far fetched. Standard controls will never die, they will always be there.. Especially with the hardcore games. With that being said, I think its a total gimmick. I've tried the PS3 motion controls, the Wiis and its fun for about an hour.. After that, its just lame as heck.

Anyways, point being.. This isn't going to take over the industry, it caters to a select few who do happen to enjoy moving and looking like fools while playing video games. I prefer to sit in my chair with a controller in my hand like any other person and game it up.

ive been gaming since NES, and yes i like regular controls but i feel there is an advantage to motion controls when applied to 3D graphics....the advantage is being emersed in a virtual world like no other, you cant be emersed ina virtual world better or the same with regular analog controllers...i think analog and dpads are for 2d games and 3rd person action adventures...i believe we'll be using both control types int he future for those types of games...

Dude I'm 19 and I feel the exact same way. Don't be alarmed though half of the gamer populace seems to be ok with the idea of motion control while the others hate it. I also feel the same about all digital games. There is nothing like that feeling of rushing to the store to grab your copy and just staring in awe at the box. Sure you may have to wait another couple of minutes but it is so worth that journey.

i'm 33 and I enjoy having variety in my games. I like having games that use motion controls, be it for sports type games or something like zelda. but i also enjoy games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect which wouldn't really benefit from much motion control. the most those games would have would be using the pointer which IMO is just fine.

the controllers work fine. but, even if I wanted motion controls, I can't use them, one of my arms is partially paralyzed and I can't raise it up or move it out......so if they stop developing for controllers, I'll stop gaming.
