This proves Gamespot can't be taken seriously...yes i know this is REALLY old, but i totally forgot about it. Whats even worse is the reasoning towards that score...being the cutsenes were to long and that Hideo should be making movies..WTF? and they totally missed the whole top notch story/characters/stealth gameplay WHICH IS WHAT REALLY MATTERS and just about all the little things that sets MGS apart from other games.

But they still continue it, MP3 (8.5 ), Zelda TP (8.5), Lair (4.5 is just too low) and then go even further by giving such a horrible shooter PDZ a 9.0?

How can anyone use gamespot as ownage? Who cares if this is GS forums its just mind boggling.

Dissagree with me, good for you..have a cookie.

Yes, GS's reviews have been pretty poor. Part of the problem is GS was a PC SITE. PC Reviewers playing console games do not make for great reviews. They also have a broken system, but it's gotten better over the years. Still, it comes down to just one reviewers choice, and ultimately, it kind of stinks. What can you do?

EGM and GI have a better balance I think.

I've played MGS 1 many times, its a short game with WAY too many cutscenes. An 8.5 is quite appropriate, and I also think there are way too many cutscenes in the most popular Sony games. FF and MGS are almost completely composed of cutscenes XD MGS is still fun, don't get me wrong, but it could be much better.

I generally think GS reviewers are pretty reliable.

I even agree with Greg's reasons for flopping MGS3, though I personally think the virtues of that game outweigh its defects.

But Jeff's review of the original MGS was simply an atrocity. He stated that once you knew how to do everything in the game, you can run through it in 3 hours.

Who judges a game by how long a speed run takes? :|

In order to complete the game in 3 hours, you'd have to skip every cutscene and know how to get through each area and defeat each boss by heart. Otherwise, it's not possible.

I guess all those Sony devs should go jump off a bridge somewhere and the rest of the devs you like make all the games in the world.

I memorized Zelda, Contra, Megaman, Mario, Metroid, A boy and his Blob, Final Fantasy, RE4, (Plenty more)and the quickest ways to beat StreetFighter. I guess those should be considered 8.5's or lower too judging from my speed runs.

Kojima just doesn't measure to some people.

I quit trusting their reviews a LONG time ago.

IGN and GT are my main sources - flawed, yes, but I agree with them.

I have to agree - gamespot reviews were always substandard and rarely conformed to to the consensus of other credible gaming sites (bioshock comes to mind). I think that since the beginning they have been consulting clairvoyants and a dartboard to form the basis of their reviews with Jeff being the centrepiece of their inspiration.

I love cut scenes.

My experience with games are much better when the game has large number of cut scenes (like Final Fantasy series, MGS series, Xenosaga series, etc) than games with no cut scenes (Oblivion, Half Life 2, etc)

It enhances the gaming experience. The story gives so much more emotions and expression to the point where it makes me care that I finish this mission or go through this dungeon etc.

I wouldn't change a thing in MGS. If you took out the cut scenes, the plot would've been more shallow and it wouldn't have meant much to hear Ocelot making that phone call at the end of the game.

Obviously, Jeff was too focused with the idea that game has to be like game instead of trying to enjoy the experience Hideo Kojima have created. Is it wrong for game developers to try to make movie like game? I say no. It is a good change and makes great variety.

I hope he changed his vision over the course of the years.

Well the game has just as much length in cutscenes as it does in gameplay, whats wrong with turning it into a movie instead? Based on your post it seems you would be fine with that.....hmmm a MGS movie....I think I'd pass, its too Narutoish for me.

I like most GS reviews. I find myself agreeing with most of the points in the review, especially Jeff's reviews.

As for MGS1, I think the score was a little too harsh, but most of the review's points about the game were very true.

Personally I think Greg. K was best reviewer. He was very analytical and really did break down the game's fine points and flaws well and understood what the game was trying to do and how successful it was at doing so, and most of the time he was very objective.

Jeff, I often think he goes little off like Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3. I think his subjective view gets in the way too much.

MGS1 was probably tough to review. Keep in mind, that game set the standard and there weren't many games you could compare it to. getyeryayasout

According to GS :
Standard Setting? Innovative? Great Story? Good Voice Acting? Short Speed Runs? Hard To Compare it?

8.5.

Thank you come again.

MGS is easily deserving of an AAA score. Heck, I played it recently and its still an amazing game, there's no excuse for an 8.5 score, particularly when the main reason is that it can be completed in 3 hours. Well yes, but that's missing the freaking point of the game.

Its a fairly fun game, but MGS fanboys need to understand that the cutscenes and story are plain embaressing to anyone over the age of 12.

Apart of MGS1 score, another ridiculous review is Shenmue 1 and 2. Omg i loved those games and GS gives them 7.3 and 7.8, that was the time when faith to GS reviews was lost.

I find it funny that people have the nerve to claim ownage over spelling errors, that don't even know how to spell themselves.

Sorry to be so forward about this, but you spelled "Practise" wrong, it's "Practice". Also got "irrelivant" wrong there, too. There's a great program called MS Word if you didn't know...

I cant even believe you are calling MGS cutscenes trash. MGS has more underlying themes than anygame i can think of, except maybe final fantasy games. Please, sumone tell me a game with as many prevalent themes as MGS. And the cutscenes are some of the best staged. whats your idea of a good cutscene? Its got good voice acting, direction, action and emotion. Heck, MGS puts alot of movies to shame. To be quite honest, I would like you to tell me a game which you think surpassed MGS in cutscenes and themes because i just cant seem to find one (except maybe a final fantasy game)

Im sorry, but your inclusion of FF as some kind of high watermark of story telling only reiiterates my personal dogma.

thats the problem when you review story driven games

some people who dont understand good stories will give them bad scores

like xenosaga for instance brilliant story with average gameplay

yet the lame reviewers cant seem to factor in the brilliant story...

Sounds fair enough to me.

Its a fairly fun game, but MGS fanboys need to understand that the cutscenes and story are plain embaressing to anyone over the age of 12.

poo_monkey

are you 13?

No i simply have an education.

And taste.

And no imagination.

And no real sense of what fun is.

I'm so sorry that I happen to play a variety of games on either end of the spectrum, but MGS is a great game, especially for its time.

Or MSG could be a generic game with a generic story, watching cutscenes isn't everone's idea of fun. I agree that it was great for its time though. Also stop making my cell phonage noticable! If you could understand the words as well as you can apparently type them, you would know that I wasn't making fun of anyone's spelling, chubs.

thats the problem when you review story driven games

some people who dont understand good stories will give them bad scores

like xenosaga for instance brilliant story with average gameplay

yet the lame reviewers cant seem to factor in the brilliant story...

Oh? What is so deep and interesting about the MGS storyline? IMO, its as generic as it gets.

You didn't tell me why you believe it isn't. :) It is just like every other generic anime out there, it smells of Naruto to its core...and I despise Naruto....

Alright, so MGS is not what everyone can consider their kind of game, but it seems to me a lot of people that bash MGS are blind and are also the ones that claim Halo as the third coming of Christ, so I feel I have an obligation set the record straight.

About the spelling; Then you know you wouldn't have to bring up the subject of spelling at all in a post that's not exactly credible for its spelling either, no matter what you're really trying to get at, understand? ;)

You can call MGS story stupid, you can call it worthless, call it trash, heck you can even go as far as being a homophobe and call it gay but the one thing you can not call MGS is generic. Ever since MGS1, no one has been able to predict where this games story was going. Think about MGS4. Whats going to happen? All we know is that snake is possibly going to die other than that, nothing. Why are all the major MGS characters back in this itteration? whats EVE gonna do? is Meryl good or bad? what's liquid Ocelot up to? How will it end? Will the S3 plan be successful? Where is Olga's baby? MGS is the video game equivalent of LOST except it answers questions every once in a while.

I don't dislike MGS, I've already said that its an ok game, but its just not AAA material imo. Halo on the other hand is worse than Timsplitters. At least time splitters took talent to excel at. Also I will say again, I did not criticize their spelling at all, I was trying to make it seem as though I thought they were learning English as a 2nd language or something and just typing random sentences on a random forum. Yeah I spelled 2 words wrong and made mah self look like a, "The Dummy", how about we stay on topic?
