My Theory on why the Wii is pwning the competition

Just got a 360 today which was my first next gen console (and an utter ****ing dissapointment) . I was playing about with it having a look on XBox live market place looking at the demos section, and it occured to me. The Wii deserves to be pwning the 360 and PS3

Take the 360. Almost every demo you can download of it was either some crappy sports game or some kind of shooter/shooter derived game. Their is a distinct lack of variety on the console, nothing you can play with your family for example. Everything is single player or online based. It is a console for adolescents and single men . The games that do stand out in some way are mostly availible on the PC and look/play far better (take bioshock). The system is also not "fully next gen" thanks to Microsofts ridiculous SKU strategy and it is plagued with reliability problems.

The PS3 (which i am getting in two weeks off a friend cheap) has a different set of problems problems. The console has a great deal more variety but there is practically nothing of any interest on the console until 2008. The price is also way too high and effectively prices most people out of the market (and will continue to do so for a few years at least). This coupled with Sony's confusing marketing strategy and conflicting messages (we dont need rumble!! now we do!!) has pissed off a lot of people.

The Wii is cheap, broadly apealing, has some great games coming this year (mostly exclusive) and has OK graphics. For most people that is enough and coupled with the "new way to play" and the included game/tech demo the Wii is an attractive proposition.

But the wii is mainly wining because of price/hype.

i played a bit of lost planet (it's the only game i own)

and i downloaded the blue dragon demo and the darkenss (download took ***king ages). The only one i played is the Blue Dragon demo (the one where the robot goes in the spaceship and you have to save the girl with the collar round her neck) and i only played it for a minute. I don't know what the tag is, it was the guys who sold it to me

it's pretty dissapointing so far

Did you download all the cool demos of soo many xbox live arcade games? small arms, worms etc most of those are very family friendly. not every game is on the pc and there is a downside(espically in bioshock with rootkits, only able to install twice etc..)What the heck is with this not fully next gen crap? by your logic neither is the wii so out of the three conles only ps3 is?

Great deal more varity? what the heck... this is not xbox vs. ps2 the ps3's best game right now is resistance which is a shooter, motorsotrm is a racer heck the ps3 only has one rpg out this ENTIRE year(folklore) while the 360 has four(mass effect, blue dragon, lost odyssey, eternal sonata) and other games, Ace combat six(flight simulater), viva pinata party animals(very very casual and family oriented), naruto(platformer/action adventure) not to mention all the non shooter games already out like kameo,overlord, pgr3, froza 2viva pinata, all the xbox live arcade games.

while i disagree with your opinion on the 360..........i do see your point

360 and ps3 are EXCELLENT consoles for gamers (such as myself) who enjoy the single player and online experience

but where the wii excels at is providing a fun past time for a group of people who are in a room together......especially when there are people in that room who don't regularly play games

sure, the 360 and halo 3 is a dream come true for a group of gamers......but try introducing halo 3 to your girl, and theres a good chance that it won't be met with much enthusiasm. wii sports, on the other hand, would probably get a better reception. and not just because of wii sport's genre, but also becasue the wii's control scheme makes it more intuitive and easy to use for those who don't usually play video games.

Everybody likes to knock the Wii for a supposed lack of variety, but really that's a problem on all consoles. I'm not saying 360 is just shooters, but most of the top-rated games are shooters, and you're in trouble if you don't like FPS at all.--ProtoMan--

PS3s list of upcoming games is pretty diverse if you ask me.

I have to agree. The biggest games on the 360 are mostly shooters/shooter derived games. Look at Nintendo's systems sellers. Zelda - Action Adventure. MP3 - FPA. Super Mario Galaxy - Platformer. SSBB - Fighter. This is not to say that the Wii lineup is superior, but it definitely has more variety. It also definitely has more family friendly games. That's why so many people want the Wii. It's great at parties and it gets people up and moving around.

Then you have so much positive press about how people in hospitals are given opportunities to rehab using Wii Sports, retired people holding tournaments, and many other advertising opportunities that Nintendo has taken advantage of. The Wii is just a great product that was marketed correctly.

I don't believe that he bought a 360. When you buy a product you want, you don't trash it on the very day that you bought it. The 360 is an amazing machine, as is the PS3. If you had it hooked up to your TV, you would be enjoying it.Berserker_2

Where are the platformers... Kameo yes... but what else? I spend alot of time here and can't think of name of others off the top of my head...

i was expecting it to be amazing. i spent 40 quid on a graphics card back in may and it looks great on my PC and practically every game i want on the 360 i can play on the PC.

You know why the Wii is winning in sales? I can tell you why just from an experiance I had while at Best Buy.

I was at Best Buy just browsing cheap Xbox and PS2 games and I noticed that they were sold out of Wii's. During that time, at least 3 families, two with young kids and one with a teenage girl came looking for Wiis. That is exactly why it is selling so well, it appeals to everybody but espeically families with kids. Its cheap fun for the whole family.

I see more mature gamers (teens and up) browsing the Xbox 360 and PS3 sections, but I see a fair share picking up Wii tiles as well. But the Wii appeals to the largest market, and it will sell the most because of that.

So the truth hurts then. One JRPG out right now which is a flop and a bunch of sports, shooters and racing games. Not exactly what I would call variety, especially comparing it to the PS3 and Wii's upcoming onslaught of games in the next 9 months, there is far more variety between the PS3 and Wii respectively then the 360 will ever get. I want real games not small downloads (the XBLA games not the demos). Anyway, BD seems to be unliked by some reviewers, and mass effect is a shooter with some rpg elements. Finally, I hate party games (no VPPA for me), and all racers are the same game with different tracks. See the 360 has no appeal to a former GC/PS2 gamer. darkIink

As for the rest they are by and large poor quality, multiformat and unsuited to the audience. You mentioned the poor sales of Madden on the ii earlier, yet i see that you are ignoring the horrible sales of Viva Pinata on the 360.

The 360 is like i said very narrowly focused at unmarried young men or adolescent boys. That was Microsofts undoing and looking at the Demos on Xbox live i came to realise it. There were tons of sports games + a bunch of shooters for the most part. The only demos i really wanted were Bioshock and Gears of War , but i got bioshock on my PC and the XBox live in europe doesnt have gears of war for some reason

I appreciate the provision of demos and i think it is an excellent feature, but the selection on offer was sub par to say the least and they downloaded EXTRA slow on my 24 meg connection

Excellent Post Wasdie, and it is exactly how i feel

but i think it is unwise to ignore the PS3 in the long term. I am not 100% convinced it will ever outsell the Wii i do think it still has a lot of mindshare around the world and despite what a lot of PS3 owners say the games for it this year are crap. The only reason i'm getting it is because it's cheap and it's one of the soon to be discontinued 60 gigs. However, when you have the likes of Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy i think you're going to see a surge in sales.

People may bash you about your views on the 360, but don't listen, you're right. It's been said over and over on the bonus round, but the lems simply won't listen. The 360 is great if you like military games and action...but other than that, it just doesn't offer enough to appeal to a wide audiance. The xbox gamer is most likely male age 16-25.

That said, the 360 is a lot of fun...just not for everyone.

TC, did you buy a used Xbox 360 from a friend on some careless whim? It sounds like you're intentionally trying to undervalue the games on Xbox 360 by scoffing at every single thing on it. I don't understand why you'd spend your lawn mowing money on it if you knew (at least you should know, you post on video game forums like us) that this is basically what the Xbox 360 offers.

This would be the irrational equivalent of buying the an expensive car and then complaining about its features without doing some reasonable research or test driving. I know you're not very much past freshman year of high school, so I can sort of empathize with the adolescent inability for foresight and care in these matters, but please be more wary next time you make a handsome purchase with the parent's weekly allowance. I do not want to see money squandered away like that.
