the ultimate battle of the consoles! PS1 popularized the CD medium, had larger games with larger color palettes. But N64 had better platformers, and sports games close to on par. PS1 was slow as hell too, N64 fast for obvious reasons. I say N64 but I know the opinion will vary greatly.

N64 hands down. I still talk with friends about the great times we had with our N64's. I can always bring up conversations involving Zelda: OoT, or Mario 64, or Mario Kart, or Mario Golf, Or Mario Tennis, or Golden Eye, Or Banjo Kazoie, or Donkey Kong 64, or Perfect Dark, or Pokemon Stadium, or Zelda: Majoras Mask, or Diddy Kong Racing, or Super Smash Bros, or all the other great games i had.

Last year my friends were sitting at school talking about the greatest game in the world Zelda: OoT, and how i flew through the water temple, and they all struggled.

I cant even remember the games i had on my PS1, I know i had a Yu-Gi-Oh game but thats it.

PS1 had MGS, FF 7, 8 and 9 among other great RPGs, Resident Evil, Castlevania SotN to round out some of its more popular titles.

N64 had Zelda OoT, Majoras Mask, Mario 64, 007, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart, Banjo and other great titles as well.

Its a toss up for me. Both consoles had roughly the same amount of outstanding titles.

Thats a close one but i would say PS1 over all. Although, the N64 gave me some of the best games i have ever played. Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask stands as probably one of my favorite games of all time.

No offense, but Donkey Kong 64 was.....awful. Collecting bannanas in bland levels wore out its welcome pretty quick. Out of my love for the SNES DK games I tried my best to enjoy it, but it just wasnt working.

Their both good imo. A lot better than any of the 3 consoles we have now. Ps1 had some of the greatest roleplaying games ever made. Also had MGS. Nintendo 64 had a way better first party lineup. N64 had better graphics by far. n64 was better for Fps games. Plus it had argubally one of the greatest games ever made. But ps1 had more mature games. And Also PS1 had better Sound. I had the privalage of owning both systems. I loved both. I loved the Rpgs on PS1, And i loved Zelda, Mario, Smash brothers, and The glory Days of Rare.

I here that man. Lots games I once loved would be just meh if I went and played em now. Still though N64 does have some timeless gems in its library.

I think my problem was that it just wasnt platformer enough. Most platformers I really enjoy have slick momentum based mechanics and great level design that keeps offering variation to the core gameplay. DK64 was more about testing your patience by making you search high and low for X many bannanas rather than testing your skills with solid platforming mechanics.

I never got technical with my games back then. I think thats the reason why N64 was the best gaming i ever had. If a game was fun i loved it.

Now i look at all the technical aspects of games, and its a real turn-off now a days.

Plus reviews totally killed a lot of gaming for me. Every time im interested in a game i always check the reviews. Boy does that really annoy me. I try not to go off of reviews but when i see a low score hit a game its a giant turn-off.

I love both consoles but I'm going with my N64. The times I've had with Super Mario 64, Legend of Zelda Ocarnia of Time, Super Mario Cart 64, and Super Smash Bro's can't be replaced with anything I played on the Playstation. On paper, Playstation whooped N64.

Yeah I try to being swayed by reviews myself as it is just one mans opinion on a game. If a game gets bad reviews from every major site then yeah I'll probably pass on it. I know if I used GS reviews exclusively as method for choosing my purchases I would often buy trash and at the same time miss out on some great games.

Haha so true. There still is that little voice in the back of my head that says "the game only got a 6.5, are you sure you want it?" LOL. That's the reason i loved the N64 days, i would look at the back of the box and if the game looked fun i bought it. I don't ever remember buying a game i didn't like. I even thought Pilot Wings was fun. Wait that game got an 8.9. Ahh reviews are all over the place.

I think PlayStation was a better system because of its use of CDs and the fact that I think N64 had the worst controller ever designed.

But on the other hand, the N64 had more memorable and timeless games IMO. Sure, Metal Gear Solid was great, but in my eyes, it will never be of the same caliber as Ocarina of Time or Mario 64.

N64, for mario 64 and goldeneye alone, star wars: shadows of the empire, wave racer, smash brothers, and OOT.  Phenomal system, playstation was amazing as well, doing link system with 2 ps1's, 2 copies of command and conquer and 2 tvs, oh man :X

n64 gets my vote though, should have made this a poll

Nintendo 64

I didn't like anything on PlayStation besides Crash Bandicoot, and Crash can't compete with Mario, Link, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Conker, Banjo, Joanna Dark, James Bond, Riki, Mami, etc.

I personally prefer the N64. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask are all part of the reason why.

PSX by far. N64 is home of some of the finest games ever, but it redefined the term "console games drought". I feel sorry for anyone who's only console was N64

I'm a fan of both, but I am going to have to go with N64 on this one. Zelda OoT, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, Super Smash Brothers, Perfect Dark, 007 Golden Eye. All of these franchises were prime on the N64, and none of them have done better since.

PSX, easily! Not only it had the awesome RPG library that isnt still beaten. FF7,8,9, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Grandia, FF Tactics, Star ocean 2, BoF3 + Games like Resident evil 1+2+3, Castlevania Sotn... but most important title was, METAL GEAR SOLID!

Both were pretty awesome but I vote for the N64. The quality ratio on N64 was amazing.

Alot of great games came out on both. Tekken - resident evil - gran tourismo etc etc on PS1 are actually more my type of game, and yet, the magic of games like Zelda OOT, banjo kazooie, mario 64 etc hold more weight as time goes on.

I think that gen was the best gen there's been in gaming so far, the PS1 and N64 had so many legendary games. For me, the PS1 is great, but the N64 wins, my all time favourite console, and many of my all time favourite games were on that console. So many memories.

Toshinden and Saga Frontier were trash. Some of the other games on that list where just meh. I hold both systems in the same regard.....maybe with the PS1 edging out the N64 for me simply because I love the old Jrpgs and Im an MGS fanatic. But in reality PS1 doesnt stomp N64 down to the ground. Both of them had roughly the same amount of absolutley amazing titles. If anything the N64 did more to push 3d gaming forward than the PS1 did.

Toshinden was great at its time. It was one of the first 3-D fighters in PS (1995). The sequels were bad though and the series was quickly overshadowed by other 3-D fighters. Saga frontier was a love it/hate it game so i can't blame you if you hate it. And you're right. N64 pushed more for consoles (analog and 3-D platformers) but games-wise PS trumped it.

i had a playstation, my cousins had an N64 maybe because i could only play nintendo's console in small doses when i visited them, that made me appreciate the N64 a lot more so i prefered that over my PS1 .. more classics my best games for the PS1 were tekken 2 and 3, tomb raider 2 and 3, metal gear solid, the resident evil games, crash bandicoot games as for the N64: goldeneye, perfect dark, SM64, zelda OOT, zelda MM, conker, donkey kong 64, lylat wars, mario kart 64, banjo kazooie and tooie, smash bros you can see the difference

Yeah I just wasnt down with Toshinden. I remember playing on Kiosks at KB toys back before I got a PS1 and then I got it as christmas present later on. I really didnt like it at all. I guess calling Saga Frontier trash might be overdoing it, but with all the great Jrpgs during the SNES and PS1 eras I just couldnt get into it. I guess the PS had the 64 beat in the amount of good games, but when it comes down to the console defining titles they each have pure gold.

PS1, it was the only console I had back then. I've always been interested in the N64 though.
