N64 would've been a big pile of fail without Rare.

My god, that one company actually saved Nintendo's ass. Although, the N64 is an average system and is only praised today because of nostalgia factor. Almost all of its games have aged very poorly whilst games from the 16-bit era are fun to play.

Yeah and now that they are gone poeple see it as nintendo giving up on the hardcore gamers. Imo their support is just as good as it was back in the day except they just dont have a rare to perfectly fill the holes that they leave.

I agree with the first sentence not the second alot of n64 games are still fun to play i never played banjo kazooie before last month and i love it

Are you kidding me? Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, and especially Conker did not save the system. You have no knowledge of what made the system great.

The only game that interests me on the 360 is the Banjo Kazooie games oddly enough. I agree Rare made N64 way better but the N64 imo is still pretty awesome.

Without Rare Nintendo wouldn't have been able to sustain the system. They were always delaying their games for example. If it wasn't for Goldeneye (which outsold OOT) and Diddy Kong Racing, the N64 would've been dead before Ocarina of Time hit shelves.

While I do agree Rare made some of the best classics on the system. It could hold it's own with Nintendo's classics, BUT TC is correct that Rare put N64 on the map but saying it would have failed without Rare is too much of an exaggeration.

I'm going to have to agree with everyone who said Rare was instrumental to keeping the N64 chugging along. They made some of the BEST games on the system. Golden Eye and Perfect Dark scored 9.8 and 9.9 (respectively) on Gamespot, and they deserved it cause they were outstanding titles that you had to have if you owned an N64.

Youre totally right the BEST games were straight from Rare. God they were truly amazing back in the day. N64 was truly their peak period.

I wouldn't say big pile of fail, but Rare did indeed play a huge part in developing a legacy for the platform. But overall they weren't superior to Ninty's own, and the system also had several great non Rare titles.

Well at that time Rare was owned by Nintendo, so Nintendo had a lot of input in those games, for proof, just check Rare games without Nintendo. Maybe it is the other way around, without Nintendo, Rare would never got all the recognition it has,

If you had said Rare + Nintendo I would have agreed with you. But without Rare the system would still have great games like Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Paper Mario, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox, F-Zero, Pilotwings, 1080, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, the three Mario Party games and others.

My mistake, I was thinking about the one on Gamecube. Although, the games Rare made were a ton better than almost the entire games you listed by Nintendo. When will you sheep give credit to Rare for saving the N64?

While it would be stupid to downplay Rare's importance in developing games for the N64, Nintendo themselves put out the best games for that system. Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Star Fox 64, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart. There were plenty of non-Rare third-party games as well: Tony Hawk, Paper Mario, Excitebike, Resident Evil 2, NFL Blitz, and Rayman 2 just to give some examples.

Not as good without Rare? Sure. Still pretty damn awesome? Yep.

Lol yeah right. Their latest game for Nintendo was Starfox on Gamecube...that was such a damn classic right? RIGHT?! Let's not ignore the fact that during the N64 it was really a Rare and Nintendo show for that console. Rare on the 360 has been making great unique titles, but because people have more titles to choose from, it gets overshadowed.

Starfox 64 was created and developed by Nintendo. It had nothing to do with Rare. You're maybe thinking of Starfox Adventures for the Gamecube.

Many forums I've been to. At IGN not too long ago I remember there was a thread(poll) about if people would still play Goldeneye now. Almost all of them voted that they wouldn't play it again.

Even if that were true, that's only one game on one message board, not enough to pass judgment that all N64 games haven't aged well.

You are right. it seemed like Rare popped out 2 AAA games a year for the system. They havent had the same impact in the last 10 years or so. Which may have something to do with many people leaving Rare. Rare had more great games for the N64 than Nintendo did.

I agree, rare really has fallen from their pedestal since leaving nintendo.

Bukowski81

Lol yeah right. Their latest game for Nintendo was Starfox on Gamecube...that was such a damn classic right? RIGHT?! Let's not ignore the fact that during the N64 it was really a Rare and Nintendo show for that console. Rare on the 360 has been making great unique titles, but because people have more titles to choose from, it gets overshadowed.

I was talking about the N64 era, all Rare games on the N64 era were made for Nintendo, Rare was part of Nintendo. Jut like today is part of Microsoft so Microsoft has an input in all the games they release, Nintendo had an input an all the games they released on the N64 era.

If Nintendo had as much input as MS then they really had NOTHING to do with the games Rare made. It was their creativity and nothing else. That sniveling character known as Miyamoto bashing Rare for making Donkey Kong Country is enough proof that Nintendo had little to do with Rare's success.

Only a few people who made Goldeneye left Rare.

Wow alot of these people posting are really funny. Look at the new franchises Rare created and all of the games people have named are all triple AAA or AA franchises.

I would take Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Jet Force Gemini, DONKEY KONG 64 (that no one named), Killer Instinct, Blast Corps, and Mickey' Speedway USA ANYWAY over....

Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Super Mario 64, Smash Bros and the rest of the crappy Mario Sport and Party games.

Rare didn't necessarily make the N64 because Nintendo had alot of popularity from the SNES but they definitly saved them.

Whoever disagrees is just hating on them because they aren't with Nintendo anymore.

Without Rare Nintendo wouldn't have been able to sustain the system. They were always delaying their games for example. If it wasn't for Goldeneye (which outsold OOT) and Diddy Kong Racing, the N64 would've been dead before Ocarina of Time hit shelves.

AHUGECAT

While I do agree Rare made some of the best classics on the system. It could hold it's own with Nintendo's classics, BUT TC is correct that Rare put N64 on the map but saying it would have failed without Rare is too much of an exaggeration.

Tell me the games that Nintendo made that were soooooooo much better.

The Zelda games, Starfox 64, Smash Bros, SM64, F-Zero, Paper Mario, and DK64 (well, I guess DK belongs to both of them technically). The N64 wouldn't have been great without Rare, but Nintendo hammered out some great titles for that system as well. Let's not forget about the Turok games, Rayman, Starcraft, etc.. other great titles on that system not made by Rare.

Rare made Goldeneye and Perfect Dark which helped immortalize the N64, though there were many other games that helped, it wasn't a one-trick pony.

N64 got burned because their 3rd party support tanked, and it also killed the Gamecube. It proved that no matter how good your first party games are, it's not going to get you first in the console wars. Did Rare help the n64? Yeah, it did, although the games made by Rare for the n64 aged really poorly, in terms of both graphics and gameplay.

Rare was to N64 as Square was to PS1. Unfortunately for the N64, every other Japanese developer supported the PS1 so it stands with the better library.

Rare's games > all PS1 games

So yah I mostly agree with this thread.

treedoor

Xenogears > all Rare games.
