Which and why?
Tough one. I haven't completed Xenoblade yet, and i'm playing P4 Golden right now... Overall, I prefer Persona... Both are damn good games.
Haven't finished persona 4 yet, they were both amazing rpg's last gen.
Definitely. I got a good way through P4G when I played on Vita, but I got rid of it... So I picked up a PSTV to play through it and finish.
I just beat Xenoblade Chronicles for Wii last month.. however I never finish Persona 4 Golden (funnily enough I made it to the last dungeon before my Vita was stolen after I left it at a resteruant). I watched the ending on youtube lol.
I wouldn't call my opinion very sound as I didn't truly finish P4G, but based on what I have played from it and based on beating and putting 77 hrs into Xenoblade, I think Xenoblade wins overall.
I loved Xenoblade for what it did with its fantastic day/night music and amazing environments, and unprecedented sense of scale and grandeur in a game I've never approached before anywhere else. Also very fun battle system. However I found the main hero characters were not that interesting honestly, and I didn't care for most of them in terms of their personalities. Most of their interactions to me feel kinda soulless or dull which was unfortunate, although I feel most of the major key emotional moments were acted quite well.
Which is funny because that's exactly where P4G excelled for me is in the character interactions and personalities which I loved. Even teachers and other characters from social link you talk to seem to have funny personalities. Music was pretty good too, They did a good job with the different themed dungeons. Being in same city for most of the game get really repetitive for me (way worse in Persona 3 though imo), and I thought the story could have been stronger/ more interesting for me anyway. This is hardly an anywhere near objective criterion for judging an rpg but I tend to much prefer rpgs that convey a grand sense of adventure and you get to travel to very good variety of locations, which P3 and P4 in general to me seemed to lack.
Strangely enough I did not find the story in either game to be particularly great, I thought they were both solid stories.
If I try to use gamespot rating system, I would probably give P4G 8/10 (based on what I played) and Xenoblade 9/10. I feel that if Xenoblade had characters that I really liked and had great funny conversations together (an element from the "tales of" series I love!) , and a story that manage to captivate me through the whole game (I feel Xenoblade's took a good long while to pick up and lots of reveals are too near end of game) , I could have gotten a 10/10 from me.
There is only on answer to this question: Persona 4 Golden. Not only does it stand as one of the rare instances of good storytelling in video games where it actually benefits from the medium, but the overall gameplay is great thanks to the fusion of dungeon crawling and social sim, the characterization is amazing, the soundtrack is probably the best in the history of the medium, and overall, it presents a synergistic, compelling, cohesive product the likes of which we don't usually see.
It's one of the greatest games ever made, and certainly my all time favorite.

We all knew what your answer would be lol
Both good games, but I'm giving it to Persona because I don't like the combat in Xenoblade.
What didn't you like about it?
I had the same problems with it that I had with Dragon Age: Inquisition. It plays too much like an MMO and those are only good with a keyboard and/or a Razer Naga.

Gotcha. I have no problems with the controls on wii or new 3ds versions.
My vote goes to Persona 4. It kept me entertained all the way through, while with Xenoblade I never could get through even the first area (multiple attempts) without quitting out of boredom due to the most dreary filler quests in the recent decade. Xenoblade's gameplay is also reminiscent of a traditional MMO, so that too did not appeal to me in a single-player.
Now that I think about it, Xenoblade is probably the only 9+ game out there that I simply cannot stomach, and I'm quite tolerant of even average games.
Persona 4. The game has the best balance between story and gameplay, and balancing out dungeon crawling and social aspects of the game so it never forces you to really endure one aspect of the game for too long. Also has some of the best localization I've experienced from a JRPG, has an excellent soundtrack, and despite having played it on PS2, visually the game is very stylish in a minimalist kind of way though it doesn't excel graphically in any major way.
Xenoblade for me. Much prefer the story and many of the elements in Persona 4 but the boring ass dungeons are just grindy slogs with no variation to keep you interested. If they fix this in P5 it will be my ultimate JRPG.
I came here to say basically this.
Both lack gameplay. Dawson's Creek in Japan vs Avatar in Japan. Take your pick.
lol! They aren't the most intricate fighting mechanics, but it's the world and experience that sucks me into them.
Which is why the positive aspects are highly subjective. Style over substance.
Hmm, well i haven't played Persona 4 (yet. I'm working on that as soon as i'm done with Persona 3 Portable), but Xenoblade Chronicles is one of my most favorite games ever made. I think i actually loved everything about the game from the beautiful, unique world to the characters (it's Reyn time, baby), to the combat system and so on.
I stupidly watched about half of the Persona 4 anime, so i know a bit about its plot, which i didn't like. I already prefer the story and characters in Persona 3 by a wide margin. But i can't say for sure until i actually play P4 and fully digest its story and characters.
Persona 4 easy. The story and characters are deep and interesting. The combat was easy to learn and intuitive. Less micromanagement with the menus is a plus also. Music was the only thing I would say was better in Xenoblade when comparing. I just enjoyed Persona 4 Golden so much and played it through multiple times which is something I don't do too often anymore.
Xenoblade by a bit and I'm a hardcore Persona/Shin Megami Tensei fan since Persona Revelations but Xenoblade's story, concept, world design and music was better. Both games had great gameplay. As much I love Persona and Shin Megami Tensei, I gotta give it to Xenoblade.
