Naughty Dog reportedly working on The Last of Us remake • Eurogamer.net

'Naughty Dog is working on a The Last of Us remake, according to a new report.

Bloomberg said this project was in development at an unnanounced new studio created within its little-known San Diego-based Visual Arts Service Group, but was handed to Naughty Dog after Sony had a change of mind.

Meanwhile, Days Gone 2 isn't happening. Bloomberg said Sony Bend unsuccessfully pitched the sequel in 2019. "Although the first game had been profitable, its development had been lengthy and critical reception was mixed, so a Days Gone 2 wasn't seen as a viable option," Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported.

A team within Days Gone is helping Naughty Dog with a multiplayer game. A second team within Days Gone was assigned to work on a new Uncharted game "with supervision from Naughty Dog", but this is no longer happening and Sony Bend is now working on a new game of its own.'

Wonder if owners of the original will get a free update.

Oh come on. I loved that game but it was already remastered and unlocked to a pseudo 60fps. Don't mess with it. Make something new FFS

Yeah, this is very disappointing news. Both parts:

- I would've loved a Days Gone 2, the first was a very good, but very flawed game. Definitely something that could be improved with a sequel.

- Instead of TLOU 3, Naughty Dog is instead focussing on a TLOU 1 remake. That's three Playstation consoles in a row that are getting some form of TLOU 1:

Playstation 3, Playstation 4 & Playstation 5

Serious question.....Are you genuinely excited about a remake? Given Sony´s history you’ll pay for it again even if you own it already.....and that given Xbox’s policies regarding 1st party upgrades is this a good move by Sony?

Well, we don't know anything until it's confirmed. But if it's true, I would be ok with it. I really didn't like the direction they went with TLOU 2.

Bend working on a new IP is great news. Everything else .... weird. It sounds like Jimbo and Hermen came in and tried to fix some bad decisions.

The AAA industry is hunkering down entirely on sequels/remakes.

Sony is no better than Activision in this regard. They only want to build multi-billion dollar franchises and I really doubt we'll see another The Last Guardian or Days Gone style new IP this gen.

Well, The Last Guardian was Fumito Ueda and Japan Studio, so that's not happening again lol.

Stupid if true. Tlou is only 7 - 8 years old and already had a PS4 remaster.

Days Gone is incredibly mediocre so I won't lose any sleep.

If anything, I would have prefer all of Uncharted games (including Golden Abyss now that Vita store is closing shop for good) get remake treatment and despite I like Last of Us, it overstayed its welcome IMO.

another last of us remake... what a joke. Man naughty Dog has fallen so much for me. not a fan of last of us or uncharted. Loved the platformers like crash and jak and daxter back in the day but i cant stand these new games they make.

Who tf is itching to play the first last of us again... I just don't get it... what's the replay value?? Skyrim was guilty of this as well, but at least its an RPG where you can replay it different ways... last of us and uncharted are prime examples of one and done games for me.... Naughty Dog might be the most overrated developer in the industry. I think they blow. Gameplay is boring. They make virtual story books. Put more times into the cinematics than gameplay mechanics.

I'm curious of what multiplayer game they are working on. Haven't seen a good MP game by sony in like 13 years so ill wait to see.

The multiplayer game is without a doubt TLOU Factions.

---

I'm not a fan of remaking TLOU but, I also don't really trust anyone but ND to work on their IP. The Sony VASG team working on it seems like bad idea to begin with. This at least salvages something that might be good but unnecessary? *shrug*

I guess the good news is that ND is working on 3 games; Uncharted, TLOU1 remake and, TLOU Factions. That at least gives me hope that we'll see a lot more output from them this generation. One can just hope they sneak in a new IP.

@Nonstop-Madness: need to work on a new IP imo.

I'm biased tho i'm just not a fan of last of us or uncharted.

I think they have a lot of talent there but its being wasted on these franchises. Make something different or unique. Dont like these 3rd person action adventure games. Both Last of Us and Uncharted just feel like tomb raider to me

Just responding because I've seen this come up a few times .... TLOU was remastered, not remade.

It was the same exact game w/ better graphics.

- Remake: (new gameplay, possibly new story points etc.)

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Resident Evil 2 on PS4

Resident Evil 3 on PS4

Shadow of the Colossus on PS4

Demon's Souls on PS5

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 on PS4

- Remaster: (better graphics)

The Last of Us Remastered

Uncharted Collection

God of War Collection

Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered

Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition

I 100% agree that they need to work on a new IP but, I don't agree with your second point. TLOU and, Uncharted are two of Sony's most successful and beloved franchises; their talent isn't going to waste making those games.

This is why I find it ironic when people think Microsoft gonna mismanage those studios or even better that those studios MS purchased were purchased against their will in some hostile takeover when in reality those studios especially under a new MS leadership are going to be in a very good place this gen as making AAA games become very expensive. Like you said you gonna see MORE new AAA IPs from Microsoft because they have the funds and dont have to worry about risk. Obsidian Entertainment if it wasn't purchased would've became a solely AA studio.

Oh, yet another internet rumour thread, is it?

"Jason Schreier."

...

You have my fullest attention.

On one hand, this is in line with Sony's "don't rock the boat" approach. Unfortunately, this overly conservative approach has its own downsides. Sony already haemorrhaged many talent during the tortuous development of TLOU2, and now they just lost some more. As game development monetary and man-hour requirements spiral ever upwards, Sony are going to need new revenue streams, which might push them into some unsavoury practices.

Sadly, as much as this might hurt their pride, Microsoft and Embracer might be onto something. By pushing for scaling and hardware independence, Microsoft's approach might be more sustainable in the long run, opening more room for variety and creative freedom. Meanwhile, Embracer's heavy emphasis on mid-budget AA games with lower break-even threshold could similarly be the way to go.

I hate to say it, but one of these days we're going to see Sony hit a wall, and we're going to see another Cyberpunk 2077/Anthem situation all over again.

That's a super bummer. I loved Days Gone and want a sequel for it. Last of Us already has a remastered version, and there's already 30+ multiplayer focused titles out already.

Honestly, this seems like a complete waste of time. I've no interest in this rumored project. I also wouldn't have had interest in a Days Gone sequel. I got the first free at the PS5 launch and still haven't played it.

Honestly why on earth would you remake TLOU?? Good game and all, but already available on the PS4 with upgraded graphics and it’s perfectly playable...

Also just got days gone from ps+ and damn that’s an utter generic zombie game, thank good they don’t waste time on making a sequel to that crap!

Honestly don’t understand what Sony are doing this gen. They have an incredibly loyal user base that have bought PS5’s because they trust Sony to deliver, and they’re being crapped on from a high level.

Meh. I can’t say that I’m all that interested in a remake for The Last of Us although I guess it depends on just what they do with it.

Wasn’t interested in Days Gone so a sequel probably wouldn’t have done much for me either. I would have been interested in a new Uncharted game but will wait and see what this new game of theirs could possibly be.

Even of they're working on a remake of 1 (doubtful) it wouldnt be their number #1 priority, hell ND probably wouldn't even be handling it unless it was given to a small team. We'll still get TLoU3 or whatever else they already have planned.

I liked Days Gone and would've been down for a sequel , but at the same time I'm very curious too see a brand new IP or even a Syphon Filter game. Will I like it less , about the same , or more than Days Gone? Only time will tell.

I can't say I'm too upset at Naughty Dog wanting to lead The Last of Us Remake. And as great as the PS4 Remastered version is , there's still a lot of room for improvements - mechanics , partner and enemy AI , graphics , polish , QoL , etc. I'm curious to see how far they take things , and if they expand on the game or change things. The only downside is waiting a bit longer for their next AAA game (new IP , TLoU Part III , whatever).

I never said they weren't popular, they are extremely popular and mainstream titles. I'm just saying they both have pretty stale gameplay mechanics and focus more on presentation than actual fun gameplay. Both franchises are more like watching a movie anyway so none of this is surprising that they are making movies and tv shows to milk the franchises. I'm not denying they are very popular mainstream franchises. I'm saying they have done little to nothing in innovation.

Bad AI and stale gameplay with high quality presentation that's story focused. Its like playing a movie. Not as bad as david cage games but close.

Yeah. Same goes for all games ever. Why make any new games?

i think days gone is very underrated. with few adjustment on the pacing of story it could have been better. playing that old sawmille horde is just too intense. would love to see a sequel.
