In transitioning from PS3 to PS4 development, Naughty Dog will use its current in-house engine that powers PS3 game The Last of Us. Naughty Dog game director Bruce Straley says this is in contrast to the studio's strategy transitioning from PS2 to PS3, where the developer scrapped its competent Jak & Daxter engine in favor of an entirely new one for the first Uncharted game.

"We scrapped everything at the beginning of Uncharted 1, and we had a perfectly good engine with the Jak & Daxter franchise," Straley tells Digital Spy. "We could have started with something there and then built off of it and only changed the pieces and parts as we needed, when we needed. And that really caused a lot of turmoil." Naughty Dog will now make modular adjustments to its existing tech as needed for story and game design.

The Last of Us launches on PS3 June 14. A season pass was announced earlier this week, marking Naughty Dog's first foray into single-player DLC content.

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/31/naughty-dog-to-retain-the-last-of-us-engine-for-ps4-games/

This probably means the dev cycle won't be as long as it was for Uncharted 1. It also strongly suggests we'll see TLoU and even an Uncharted Collection on PS4, as once the engine is working on it, it shouldn't be that difficult to get the full game working on it.

Making a new engine would be incredibly costly so it makes sense. Uncharted collection or TLoU coming to the PS4 is pretty obvious. :P

Smart move. Making a new engine costs a LOT and the engine already seems to have a lot of impressive tech in place like the lighting and shadows, but just scaled way back for crap hardware. The PS4 should allow it to really open up and flex and allow much higher res assets

If they got the engine running on PS4, that makes me suspicious we may see a TLOU port to PS4 in the not too distant future.

I just played the demo and to be frank, i really think they have every right to keep this engine, it is definately amazing, once they scale it up and add some features to it, people would be blown away by what ND can do when given a decent hardware

It's irrelevant.

Well, I reckon that it's relevant. Alternatively, making a new engine from scratch would cost more time, money, and manpower; resources that could be put to more efficient use by utilizing the exisiting framework. ND even said themselves how it can pose problems with development. So, ultimately, they'll be more productive, and consumers get a potentially higher quallity product, sooner.

But, there are other times when a new engine is needed. This isn't one of them, though. :P

So when Infinity Ward said the current engine is the foundation for next gen Ghosts, people were slaming them. Now Naughty Dog confirm they will be using the same engine for PS4 its OK now is it? wow, Sony fanboys! LOL

You want to know the difference, the fact that despite IW so called new engine, it still looks like current gen, in comparison to Guerilla Games Killzone demo, which was also an upgrade version of their PS3 engine, the difference is just too wide. Naughty set a visual statement this gen, imagining what it would look like when upgraded is sure going to turn heads. While it may sound as if i am being biased, perhaps if you watch the COD demo, the Killzone demo and then watch Naughty Dogs games, you would be able to make your own conclusion

Comparing Naughty Dog graphics to Infinity Ward's is joke. COD has and will continue to look underwhelming for the sake of 60fps.

Not going to defend silly bias but code isn't just code, there has been paradigm shift the last last 7-10 years for how code is written to make it flexible and maintainable. If we look at the CoD series its visuals have been stagnating in comparison to the competition (not talking Sony, but EA's Frostbite Engine), a clear indication that the framework isn't suited for adding/expanding features. Naughty dog has on the other hand been expanding its engine a lot, adding new AI, open environments, new lighting system, moving planes and so on not forgetting the bump in texture detail. Is it too far to think a dev like Naughty Dog who moves on the brink of the latest tech would follow the new paradigm after they switched from Lisp to C++? After all, to become a programmer at Naughty Dog one has to have an "Understanding of procedural, object oriented, and aspect oriented programming paradigms": http://www.cplusplus.com/forum/jobs/25418/ One thing is for sure, the CoD engine is not giving any PC gamer the willies. I find it interesting that many of the Playstation exclusive studios like Quantic Dream, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica and Polyphony are testing "next gen" features on the PS3 and that the PS4 will be using SPURS too, it indicates a very mature PS4 development environment and easy porting of code.

Um, what engines do

-Draw/encapsulate graphics on the screen
-Handle/encapsulate user input
-Encapsulate sound, textures, meshes
-Seperate drawing graphics from logic

Keep in mind graphics engine and game engine are different. Unreal3, Cryengine, Idtech etc are graphics engines. A game engine is more about the logical structure of how the game works. For example Netherealms (mortal kombat, injustice)made a fighting game engine using the graphical engine unreal3. So yeah, graphics engines, are mainly dealing with just graphics. Thats where a lot of the grunt work lies.
