I wanted to make this thread as for one it makes a change from the 360/PS3 bashing, I mean this era is long over now so it doesn't really matter anymore. I'm also guessing that the majority of fan boys won't even know what a Master System is and will hopefully stay well clear! So which did you own? What was your favourite game of the era? What was the fate of your console? Lets keep it fun and lemme know your thoughts!

I mean, just a quick snapshot of the NES resume should strike fear into the hearts of anyone who might disagree.

I don't know the exact figures, but I think the Master System sold more in Britain. I often see less NES' at the car boot sale.

Well Sonic 1 & 2 did get released on the MS although they were totally different from the Megadrive originals. I'm gonna rock the boat and say Master System all the way :) Most of the kids I knew owned MS's and it really did have some excellent games like Shinobi, Hang-On, Chase HQ and the many Wonderboys.

Put me down for the SMS.  The NES had a broader catalog, but the SMS was a better system.

I own a Master System. Picked up a Master System 2 over last summer at a thrift shop for $8. Before you start saying "ooh, great deal," know that $8 is about all it's worth. Some games are good, but most are either crap or rare. Besides, I got GameTap later, so most of the good Master System games are on there. I used to have a NES, but that was when I was a kid. My parents sold it to get money towards an SNES. I miss my NES.

don't really know what that is exactly,  but if it's something similar to used games then it could be because the NES had so many excellent games that people actually hold onto them.  I know that's how it is here in the US.

If I saw a master system for $8 I would have picked it up in a heart beat...I have never cared about graphics I just love playing the games. Anytime to play games that I have not played before would have been worth it. That is one of the resons I love the VC on the Wii can't wait untill they get Neo Geo games.

:| you sir, have lost your damn mind. you'll find nobody here that'll jump on that bandwagon with you. NES is so far out in front of this conversation that there's no reason to even continue it. Simon Belmont + Mario + Samus + Kid Icarus + MegaMan + Luigi + Link + Princess Toadstool + Donkey Kong + ... you get the point. and that's just the starting squad. no games named...just the characters. the reserves are just as familiar. NES and its characters are engrained forever in the fabric of the history of gamnig...its primary characters etched into the minds of the young and old.

I own a Master System and there are Sonic game on it i have them. But lets be hones,t Master System is garbage like 80% of the systems Sega have made. Megadrive was a fluke for them, as it was a great console.

All of whom would have been better had they been released on the SMS  8)

I wasn't judging them on their impact to society.  Obviously the NES wins that one.  Heck, it even had its own movie!

I agree the Master System was more popular in the UK.  Old Nintendo consoles had problems running games in PAL format and there was a noticable performance drop.  I think that give Sega the edge here.

I had a Master System, there were some fun games on it. :)

I bought it on DVD. My wife thought I was nuts. I love the power glove...it's so BAD.

[QUOTE="Dreams-Visions"]there isn't even a comparison to be made. NES in a land slide.

The MS it should't just be written off, there is a comparison to be made as they were the two most popular (if not only?) 8bit consoles of the time. Just had a quick look on Wikipedia and apprently the MS outsold the NES in Europe and it was certainly the more popular system among me and my friends at the time in England.

It all really depends on your region. The Master System did really well in Europe (especially UK) and Brazil. In the US and Japan, though...not so much. I didn't even know Sega had an 8-bit system until a couple years back.

I don't think that tends to ahppen at car boot sales. Most people there are utterly clueless about what they're selling (I got a DC for £4 FFS)

NES. As a kid I didn't own a Master System.... it just wasn't nearly as well-known back then. EDIT: I'm from the US.

Although.... when I got a Genny it blew away my NES.
