  • Didn't want to release Marvel Rivals with Marvel IP in it and wasted millions of dollars trying to come up with their own characters instead
  • Didn't want to release Marvel Rivals at all actually, but stumbled into success by doing it anyway
  • Fired the Marvel Rivals director and team members
  • "Ended support for about a dozen of other gaming projects, and as a result, NetEase's China-based Studios may not have any big releases next year"
  • "Game File reports that NetEase is shopping its non-Chinese studios around. NetEase is also reportedly planning to divest itself from a majority of its overseas teams, and this could potentially lead to more studios closing down if they can't secure additional funding after being separated from NetEase."

Sounds like some more bulls*** after Embracer did some similar things. I wonder what this means for Marvel Rivals as a game?

@R4gn4r0k: I dunno, it looks like they canceled their China based games too. It sounds like a company that isn't very serious or wasn't able to think ahead about decisions they made, and now they want to get out.

To me it seems like right now a lot of investors are trying to dump their gaming teams because they are like: well there is no money in gaming anymore, it's all AI (or whatever the latest jazz is, last few years it's been tiktok).

Eventhough there is still plenty of money in gaming, plenty of opportunity to grow; But they don't wanna invest the time, or the resources, or the money.

They just need to find that goose with the golden egg, and slaughter it.

And then move on to the next goose, until they're standing a pile of dead geese.

I dunno, I guess my analogy is terrible. But I always like what Jim Sterling said:

"They don't want some of the money, they want all of the money in the world"

And the only thing that matter is the thing that makes them all of the money, which isn't gaming rn.

Where Winds Meet was hugely successful. 15 million players.

However, the caution around Marvel Rivals was warranted. It was a surprise success.

It seems Quantic Dream may get closed.

I generally don't take pleasure in seeing good or neutral things fail, but I have to admit part of me might enjoy watching the phenomenan that is Marvels Rivals' success implode from self-sabotage occurs.

It's like, Idunno...here we have this surprising success in a sub-genre of games that is hard to be successful in due to one or two titans of the sub-genre dominating it, and then here comes Rivals and it just breaks that.

Chinese companies that know what they're doing in gaming are Mihoyo and Tencent

That is not successful for a F2P game launching in China, and now people have negative feelings around it due to the controversy of promoting an underage character on Valentine's day with romantic text associated. They claimed it was a mistake due to AI text being generated and used for promotion.

This company is not cautious at all and does not even care about what they are putting out there. Just make a brash decision to generate it and don't look just click Publish.

However, the caution around Marvel Rivals was warranted. It was a surprise success.

From what I have seen, I would be surprised if this company made something successful too. I'm not sure I see how they exercised caution around Marvel Rivals.

Why did they even purchase Quantic Dream in the first place? They haven't developed any games since Detroit: Become Human. It's like Embracer purchasing Eidos and doing nothing with their IPs.

@Jag85: It all seems like they didn't have a plan and were just taking a shot in the dark. Now we don't know who is going to end up with those IPs or even if anyone will want to buy them. I wonder what their investors think about all of this. Maybe this will make them not even want to do any future gaming products and instead stick with their other products/services like pig farms, e-commerce, and advertising.

It's sad because the future of Grasshopper Manufacture and other studios that made interesting games is in their hands.

I'm dying for a new Tomb Raider or Deus Ex.

I thought you meant virtual farming at first... But you meant actual pig farms?! Nothing wrong with it, but so unexpected.

I wonder that their plans are for Grasshopper? They're a niche company not known for blockbuster sales. They could be on the chopping block.

No, 15 million is good for China only.

Where Winds Meet is a hit and overall has positive reception.

And Marvel Rivals was always at risk of bombing, like Concord. Remember, Avengers flopped.

@texasgoldrush: lol no. Marvel Rivals earned $130M first month, that is much bigger compared to the $34M of Where Winds Meet. By their own measure Where Winds Meet is quite small which is curious considering it is on more widely available platforms. They had a bad fumble with terrible decisions around the marketing though so that is part of it. They are lucky to have Marvel Rivals and maybe should ditch Where Winds Meet to concentrate full time on Rivals. Unfortunately they want to continue to show their lack of sense and will probably end up killing their golden goose.
