This game is going to be godly... or demonly. Which ever you prefer.;) Some points of interest:

"These Beacons Of Sanctuary are effectively mobile hubs; spots in the wilderness demarcated by others where players can take respite from the unrelenting hardships all around. They're a kind of refuge, much like the shelters you'll find near the peaks of real-world mountains or in the middle of moors all over the world, temporary zones where both you and other players who enter can safely leave items for the weary and wounded. It's not just recovery items that can be left here but weapons, tools and, as with Demon's Souls, words of advice and encouragement."

"Part of your journey will be a slow deterioration of your character's mind, which you must delay as much as possible to avoid becoming another fell creature of this world."

"Or, like Demon's Souls, you can invade another player's game to hunt them down. There will even be quests that require you to mug other players on their own turf for specific items in their inventory, though there are measures that a weaker player being tailed by a more experienced and tougher invader can take to avoid being jumped and left as a bloody smear on the ground."

"Dark Souls introduces an ability where players can disguise themselves as a mundane object, a crate, a chair or a part of the backdrop that will be completely disregarded. With sufficient skill, it will allow the prey to give the hunter the slip, perhaps enough for them to give up the chase and move into someone else's game in search of easier quarry."

"Dark Souls lets you play as you see fit, without adhering to the rules of any moral trait, so you can pursue nobles goals like helping others to lift this curse and seeking the cure yourself, or align yourself with chaos by causing as much misery as you can by griefing other players in their own game."

"Be prepared, Demon's Souls noobs: there will be no mercy for the weak and foolish, and even the most experienced adventurer will be put to the test. No matter, because by the time Dark Souls is done with you, you're going to be praying for another thousand deaths' worth of playtime anyway."

1- Shame... I thought these beacons would be something like checkpoints so we wouldn't have to go through the whole world when killed. And it's not like you didn't have safe places in Demon¿s Souls. Once you kill the enemies around, it's pretty safe.

2- That until you figure out where the enemies are. Trial and error just like DS.

Final comment: Not really exciting IMO.

1 - Thats what Demon's Souls was all about after all. Punishing difficultly. Don't like it? Plenty other games that will hold your hand.

2 - Most games are trial and error. It baffles me how people keep saying Demon's Souls is an easy game based on the fact that they've already played it 3 times over already and know all enemies positions and weaknesses. Of course you will.

Suit yourself, man. At least with this system those who are not as skilled have more of a chance to evade more powerful players that have invaded their world. Sure, there may be trial and error involved, but this sort of system still adds another element of balance to a multiplayer that is already unique as hell in and of itself. I am sure there will be many opportunities to give other players the slip, as well as discover those in hiding when invading yourself. All fun and games, man.

If the beacon sites don't act as checkpoints, then that is fine with me. The structure of Demon's Souls with the Nexus did not prevent that game from being loved and from the sound of things, this system is a natural progression of that. No worries here. Again, to each their own.

1- I don't need anyone to "hold my hand" mate, but it was annoying to get to the boss fight, get killed and start all over. Has nothing to do with a punishing difficulty, you know?? It was ANNOYING.

2- Not at the DS level though. But saying that it baffles you when someone says that, well it makes me lol when someone says DS is hard because the first time you played it you got killed 1 million times. Of course you die a lot, it was meant to be like that... but after you learn what happens, you don't get to die as often if not at all.

It shouldn't be that way, even NGB who it's known for his punishing difficulty has an easy mode, that way anyone who want's to play the game can enjoy it, they should add difficulty levels in this game.

Overall it sounds great, specially because of that freedom of how you want to play the game, is definitely one of my most hyped games of the year.

Nope. This one is a clone... or spiritual successor for the fans.

Lol, I just finished reading Edge's preview. I think this'll have a very strong case to be made as the best RPG of 2011!

Even though it's artistically / thematically similar to Demon's Souls (which I think is the best RPG of this gen), it's systematically different in ways.

I wonder how Miyazaki wants players to play for an "eternity", considering the servers will probably be taken down after 2 years. :P I'm also curious as to how the game will accomodate for players without an online connection.

No, ist's a completely new setting and story.

However, i think that playing Dmon's Souls will give you an idea of what to expect in Dark Souls.

Obviously by adding more of those "get the best weapon by xxxxxstone" trophies.

Man, I swear you can spend an eternity looking for a couple of pure xxxxxstones just to max out your weapon (bladestone was a real pain in the ass)

Well, I think Demon's Souls servers are down now. So, you won't get the optimal experience, if you chose to play it. Also, Dark Souls doesn't have "World Tendancy", where the game reacts to how you play. Instead, players have more direct control over what's going on in their game, and how they interact with others; it'll be purely open world, too. I'm gonna miss World Tendency, but I'm glad it's unique to Demon's Souls.

Edit: I previously quoted the wrong person. :P

You think it shouldn't be that way only because you think it should be for anyone and everyone but this game is certainly not for everyone.

Too many developers are playing it safe this gen trying to appeal to everyone and not taking any risks at all. Games are becoming hybrid samey experiences because of this. From Software took a risk and it paid off big time. Gamespots GOTY: 2009.

Demon's Souls was NOT trial and error. :| I died a million times in 1-1 when I first started playing, but when you figure out how to play, its not bad. If you know to have patience, and take your time going around corners and look where you're going, you don't need to die to get past a point. Most bosses are beatable the first time quite easily.

Just curious, what do you die from in 1-1? The blue eyed knight? I always see people saying they died too many times in 1-1 and it seems weird. Dying on the way to the Tower Knight is expected though lol.

I don't see why they shouldn't allow more people to approach this game more easily, i'm not saying it shouldn't be as hard as it is, but it should offer something for people who, either doesn't have the time nor the patience to master the game but want to enjoy the setting.

Those people can play Dragon Age, Two Worlds, Fable or any other WRPG that has been easy to play this gen,

To have difficulty settings in Demon's Souls or Dark Souls would kill the perpus with the games. The whole point is about learning the game. These games aren't even that hard, you simply have to learn to be patient and not rush into things too quickly. These games can actually be played by everyone already, it's not the games fault that some people have a short attention-span.

This is a niche game for a niche audience. I am strongly against the notion that every game should be playable by every person.

I didn't know that Fable was the same as Demon's Souls, is not about difficulty, but being able to enjoy the game without ended up frustrating and hating the game, again NGB did that and it is extremely good even if it is extremely difficult it also offers an option for other people to enjoy the game, the dificult shouldn't dictate the quiality of the game, as long as Dark Souls remains the way it's intended to be, i don't see why the cannot add some option, some check point system, etc to people who want's to use it.
