Q. Does Unreal Tournament 3 take advantage of over 512MB of video memory?

A. We're going to significant lengths to take advantage of 512MB video cards and PCs with lots of memory. On PC, we're shipping lots of 2048x2048 textures, a higher resolution than we can support pervasively on console platforms. However, PCs running 32-bit Windows XP or Vista run up against a glass ceiling pretty quickly above 512MB of video memory. Because of the way the OS maps video memory into the 32- bit address space, going beyond 512MB doesn't really increase the overall usable memory. Thus, we're not focusing on exploiting more than 512MB video cards.

That situation will change over the next few years as Windows Vista 64-bit adoption takes off, because the 64-bit OS eliminates the address space bottlenecks and enables video cards to scale way up in usable video memory. But, if you look at the latest data on what gamers are actually using, e.g. with Valve's excellent survey of gamer hardware ( http://www.steampowered.com/status/survey.html), it's clear that 64-bit Vista isn't taking off yet. Give the industry a couple years, and this will change.

The PS3 can't even get anywhere near the HD resolutions of a PC. Its like 1200p equivalent. The PC version will undoubtedly look better.

They do look similar - we're talking about resolution and super High-res textures here - of course the PC version will be somewhat better. However, gamespot play tested UT3 PC/PS3

Aside from the PS3 version looking to be on par with the PC version, the other key thing to know is that the PS3 version of the game will have support for mods and other user-created content,

The PS3 looks pretty well identical to the PC version when comparing similar resolutions I'm assuming - but of course you can crank the res up on PC, I know I will be. But I'm getting both version.

To an extent, yes - however, the versions are on par with each other for the most part. There will be textures differences, aswell as resolution differences - nothing that will be too dratic however.

Well, in a 1up show podcast, they said that during E3 there was a side by side of the two. They said that the PS3 version was amazing looking, and while it's textures weren't as good....everything else was amazing.

Those pictures are all from the one version, across all versions, they are not seperate screenshots taken from each platform , same will all games on gamespot.

Even so - I'm not refering to pictures, I'm refering to Hands-on play with the PS3 version.

Exactly - I'm buying both versions, I want the Unreal Editor... and I want to play it on my TV. And every now and then I'll throw down a few games on my PC, mostly probably just making maps and bringing them over to the PS3. Both versions will be great however, no need in bickering back and forth which one is superior - of course the PC version will support higher resolutions, this much is assumed.

Nothing is stopping you from hooking your PC up to your TV whenever you want that experience. If you're buying two version just to play it from yuor couch, thats a HUEG waste of money.

Okay I am not a graphic whore but I only care about art style and such. A high end PC will have better textures , framerate than the console counterparts that will look just a tad better than Gears however a low end PC will make the game uglier.

Hooking up a computer to a TV is a complete waste of time unless you plan to use a controller. Plus most people don't have their computers next to their TV.

Dude - assume much? My TV isn't in the same room as my den, hooking my PC into HDTV is not an option for me... and its definitely not something I want to do. I'd much rather play my games on my TV, in my den... it's a more relaxing environment for me, and it's MY preference. And a "HUGE" waste of money, since when is 60$ a huge sum of money? Heh.

Once again, nothing is literally stopping you from playing your PC on your TV. It wouldn't take much effort to move and hook up your PC up to your TV in your den. OMG TEH 3 POUND CASE TWENTY FEET! You decide, move a 3 pound case twenty feet, or spend 60 bucls. Hmmmmmm.

Never-the-less, the option is still very much there. I'd much rather move my PC a couple dozen feet than spend an extara 60 dollars for no apparent reason.

It's actually about a 25 pound case - Antec P180 filled with gear.

Dude, It's in my office room, you aren't getting this... I don't want to move it! I have a PS3 hooked to my TV, I'm not hauling my PC to my freaking den to play UT3 on my TV! And 60$ is not a lot of money, I'd spend that much alone to save me the time it takes between unhooking and hauling my back and forth.

That doesn't sound right. I think you're blowing its weight WAY out of porportion, but even then, OMG 25 POUNDS TWENTY FEET TEH AGONY! However, once again, nothing is literally STOPPING you from hooking your PC up to your TV. If you want to spend 60 dollars instead of a little manual labor, then I just find that funny.

Unreal has always been PC first and console second. Just like Doom, Quake, and Half Life. Always has and always will. Console versions of fps are always second rate anyway compared to PC.

Glad you find it amusing. And it isn't about the "labor", haha - it's about convenience for me. I have the money to spend on it, and I'd rather have it setup that way. We have different preferences on the matter... that much is definitely clear, leave it at that.

It will look decent on consoles. This game will probably recommend an 8 series card or the highest 7 series card.

[QUOTE="Primevil702"]Exactly - I'm buying both versions, I want the Unreal Editor... and I want to play it on my TV. And every now and then I'll throw down a few games on my PC, mostly probably just making maps and bringing them over to the PS3. Both versions will be great however, no need in bickering back and forth which one is superior - of course the PC version will support higher resolutions, this much is assumed.Vandalvideo
Nothing is stopping you from hooking your PC up to your TV whenever you want that experience. If you're buying two version just to play it from yuor couch, thats a HUEG waste of money.

ummm..not all PC games are designed for controllers...in fact hardly any are

Okay I am not a graphic whore but I only care about art style and such. A high end PC will have better textures , framerate than the console counterparts that will look just a tad better than Gears however a low end PC will make the game uglier.turgore

At least if you have a low-end PC you can actually run the game. The PS2 can't even run it! What a joke!

Actually, every single PC game has the ability to support gamepads. Its a matter of configuring the controls. Every single game on the PC can be played on a gamepad just fine. Besides, nothing stopping him from using a KBM.

Well duh. PC version always looks the best if you have a high end computer to run it.

PS3 version will still have good visuals, kb/m support, and mods. Definitely a near equal alternative to owning a high end gaming computer.
