Just like I thought, stereotypes generlization and ignorance. *looks at the bold*
Also, way to dodge my original question. I ask again, What makes a game a JRPG?
you say artstyles, concepts and mechanics? like what? Defend your statement with something besides abstract words and non-specific descriptions like "artstyle".
Can you try harder to complicate things? Maybe we should make a thousand page book of standards? It's easy; we categorize things to make it easier for ourselves. Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross, this game, all have similarities. It's the same kind of game. Therefore, a game without those similarities like Dark Souls shouldn't be placed in that category.
So... what makes a game a JRPG, or any other category? If a game has the strongest resemblance of the games of a category, then it belongs in that category. If a game plays like Final Fantasy and the hundred of other games in the jrpg category then it's a jrpg.
For example...
Let's pretend there are no categories at all... Let's imagine this in a very basic manner...
- A game has feature "roleplaying". We call the category roleplaying.
- Another game comes out, and features racing. So we create the category racing.
- Another game comes out, and features roleplaying and adventure. It features roleplaying but not racing so we place this in the roleplaying category.
- Another game, featuring roleplaying, racing and adventure. So this game should be placed in the roleplaying category because it has a stronger similarity to games in the "roleplaying"-category. (roleplaying category matches 2 of the games tags, roleplaying & adventure, while racing category only matches 1 of the games tag)
And so it goes on and on. The jrpg have 30 years definition like this. Tags like "stats" and "turnbased". So if we are gonna place Dark Souls and this game in a category:
Should Earthlock be a wrpg or a jrpg:
Both wrpgs and jrpgs have stats.
Earthlock is turn based, do wrpgs have many turn based games? No. Jrpgs do.
In the end, as the video shows, most traits are similar to past jrpgs so it fits the jrpg category.
And Darksouls?
Darksouls have stats, both wrpg and jrpg have stats.
Do Darksoul feature a typical jrpg combat system? No.
What other traits from past jrpgs do Darksoul feature? Not many, if any at all?
But hey, it features plenty of common traits from wrpgs, such as the combat and artstyle among others. Therefore, it's a wrpg. Had it lacked stats & classes and other wrpg traits, it would end up in another category.
