Sony is really in a hard place. With all the first party devs they employ, the should've had a bunch working on at least two games set to relase in the April/May time frame. I know they had originally planned for Warhawk, Lair, and Heavenly Sword to release about now, and all the delays have really screwed up the first leg of this race for them.
What the need is a really good marketing campaign. Their ads so far have been absolute garbage. They need one ad that will highlight all the features of the ps3, and then show a bunch of the games. It should start off saying, "the ps3 is one of the top Blu-Ray players on the market, can upscale dvds and ps1/2 games to 1080p, can stream stuf off of your computer, and not only that, plays awesome looking ps3 games!" And then it cuts to a bunch of clips of games like Ratchet & Clank, heavenly Sword, MGS4, Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet and finally fades out with the "PLAYSTATION 3" logo. The first bit of the commercial that details the ps3's features should be about half a minute, then they can have another half a minute of just clips of the aforementioned ps3 games. Maybe show some clips of new Blu-Ray titles like PotC after the Blu-Ray comment as well.
It would be easy to design, cheap, and would describe the ps3 way better than any ad they've had thus far. It would explain why the thing costs $600 and i think it would do a hell of a lot for sales. It would help convince a lot of the fencesitters trying to decide between the 360 and the ps3.Â
An ad blitz like this is really the only thing i could see saving the ps3's sales right now. Hell, they could even have two or three commercials, each focusing on different aspects of the machine, from Blu-Ray, to backwards compatibility, to the new games, to the machine being a full-on multimedia device.
The problem is that most people don't know what the ps3 does. They only look at it as "the next playstation" and have no clue why it costs twice the price the ps2 did.
And there are a lot of fence sitters, i know. They had some guy in GameStop the other day contemplating buying a ps3 just for MLB07, Madden, and a few other multiplat sports titles. MLB07 was the only exclusive he wanted. It's people like these, people that only know playstation, that need to be convinced. The brand loyalty is there, it's just the price is really holding people back.
