I was thinking about the next-gen consoles being released in a couple of years time, which made me think. What sort of specs will they have?

for the next Xbox

I was thinking of perhaps:

3.2Ghz Quad core CPU with 4MB of cache (current cpu is 3.2 Ghz tri-core with 1MB cache)

3GB of GDDR5 RAM (current system has 512MB of GDDR3 RAM)

It's hard to guess about the GPU I assume for convenience sake it will have a similar architecture to the R500 but will be much more powerful in every way.

I think the base HDD model will be 120GB with 1 GB memory cards the smallest size cards available for the core version.

the next xbox I therefore assume will carry on with the current's architecture (more or less) so backwards compatibility won't be difficult. Plus developers will be familiar.

with regards to the PS3 I wouldn't like to say

Whatever Intel, AMD and Nvidia are working on atm, not whats currently out, it all be out of date far to quickly.

Something crazy like a 16 core CPU, with Intels Larabee 48 Core GPU, and some 12gb of ram.

The spec you suggested would be very weak next to PCs when the next consoles come out.

Those specs are extremely low, especially the cpu...I would expect at least 8 cores. each running at 3.2...each core having multiple threads. It would also need atleast a gb more of ram... the gpu is tough but I would bet on intel getting in w/ MS to push larabee..

If they have any sense a more refined/polished version of existing consoles with emphasis on development ease and perhaps a slight boost in performance.

If next gen goes ahead as usual system wars is going to be very boring, exclusives that aren't paid for are hard enough to come by this generation without content development costs making another jump.

a processor Core count of at least 8 running at or above 4ghz (unless architecture gets so much better than higher clock speeds aren't neccesary)

4-8gb of RAM 1+ GHZ

at least 1-1.5gb of video RAM 2+ GHZ

32bit Audio

Most games running in 1080p native

possible 1-1.5ghz+ GPU cores

160+ GB internal storage, possibly Flash Memory based (SSD)

possible Blu-Ray support.

That's my guess, may seem huge now, but just look at the hardware jumps consoles go through, they usually get 8 times or more faster each generation.

That's wildly unbalanced.

a CPU from 1971

The amount of RAM a computer had in the first half of the 90's

and a GPU from 2001.

I have no idea. ;)

Really though, I hope Sony and Microsoft stick to their respective market. 3 Nintendo's would be terrible IMO. Having that type of controller forced on you isn't a good idea if all of them are doing it. I like the Wii but having all 3 based on how the Wii is would be very difficult. Give me a traditional looking/playing controller from Sony and MS (maybe a refinement of their current ones) and some higher specs (Sony of course creating their own CPU again) and great looking/playing games and I'm good. Nintendo can stick to their current generation strategy and i'll buy their new console somewhere down the road a bit.

the next wii

wii 2

im assuming slightly more powerful then ps3 or 360 , , and be full hd

the card will most likely be handled by ati as wii 1 and gc were before hand

not known the spacifics, im assuming the cpu of the wii 2 will be more way more faster then gc wii ps2 or xbox

and be bc like wii was

the 360 same as tc- im guessing 4 mb instead of 1 , , unless this natal thing is true which could mean not even updated graphics at all or slightly better

and rumors that ps4 would be the weakest next gen has me wondering not to guess at all

and as the poster above me said , i hope ms and sony dont do as nintendo do because 3 nintendos mean like last gen no competition sony would run away with the lead and almost any game available wont be exclusive,

i hope all 3 are vastly different,

1 attacks every one-nintendo this gen

2 1 attacks core

3 1 attacks the middle group , this is those whom played alot but also want somthing different , -ala sega -the arcade mixed in as 360 is doing at the moment

Well PS3 specs would probably be 2 better versions of the cell, 1 to act like a cpu, the other like a gpu as planned with 1-2 gb of ram. I'm not expecting a huge leap to be quite honest...

Apparently you don't need any exclusives that weren't paid for by the platform owner either.

Developers are having a hard enough time justifying exclusives today, good look next gen when the cost to make games takes another leap.

Why do we need third party exclusives? They serve no purpose but to lord over others or to make us sad because we can't play them. I'm OK with a sea of multiplats and a few first or second party titles to differentiate each system.

I'm going to guess the next Xbox console will have specs with something like: Custom IBM Quad-Core CPU (3.0GHz - 12MB Shared Cache) AMD GPU DX11 w/ 512MB Dedicated VRam 2048 MB Shared System DDR3 Ram 250 GB Hard Drive Base Model 50 GB New Disc Format (HD-DVD Offshoot) Native Natal Support Built-In With a launch price of $399 for the Base Model. But I wouldn't expect this console to be out for another 2-3 years.

As a PC gamer I don't care, more previously console exclusives for me.

Since PC hardware is variable there is no static hardware forcing a set standard, developers have the option of pushing the platform rather than it being mandatory. So regardless of what happens in the console market PC always gets the most exclusives, they may not all take advantage of the latest hardware (Zeno Clash) but they are at least sustainable as exclusives because they are cheap/er to make.

However I think the console companies/fanboys will care very much that next gen Playstation/Xbox basically have the exact same line up, with only a handful of titles being the differentiators. PS3 users whine quite a bit about the 360 supposedly holding them back, in a games market were 98% of games are shared across platforms the individual advantages of each platform count for nothing.

System Wars would essentially be an worse version of what we are seeing now, people squabbling over which cross platform game has the sharper textures on what console and whose platform owner paid for exclusive micro-transactions on their platform. The days of the PS2 were developers lined up to make games for your platform are gone, console companies have to fight for their differentiators.

I love it when people build consoles with hardware for like $1000 while a big part of the forum screams for a price cut for the PS3 because $400 are too much.

this, the cell is already has set the bar fairly high, it really just needs a good GPU ......... i think that what we are gonna see in the next playstation, a better cell( may be 2 cells) wz a high end GPU and let's say 2 Gig of RAM min .... this will do the job.

In a sense, I think Sony and Microsoft are hoping the next generation starts next year when they bundle their new controllers with their systems. But the core hardware will still be the PS3 and 360.

The literal next "hardware" generation, though, will definitely have a technical upgrade... but I don't think it will happen anytime soon...

the whole 30fps or less on consoles is all to do with processing & RAM limitations.

despite all the talk whenever a new generation starts about how so & so console is more powerful than a PC it's just wrong

the CPU's in home consoles are stripped down

the GPU's in home consoles are stripped down

the amount of RAM is much lower and so too is bandwidth.

in favour of consoles developers can customize & optimize more plus they are not working with HEAVY OS in the background like Vista.

suffice to say by the time the developers take a year or two to figure out the hardware fully- PCs have already moved on a lot.

despite this generation being the HD generation for consoles the reality is that for cost reasons both consoles are on the underpowered side which is why many games are sub 720p and have poor framerates compared to PC games.

Sony, Microsoft or whatever simply cannot produce an expensive games console that competes with a PC or it wont sell. heck if you take a look at the GDDR3 RAM inside the consoles, what is the first thing you notice? the 128-bit databus. equievelant PCs at the time had 256-bit data buses and now the highest the databuses are 512-bit.

if you lower the framerate and resolution you can maintain good performance on lower end system. starting out at 1080p @ 60fps could be a bad move as you are forced to increase visuals later on in the generation.
