Alright, I know next gen gaming consoles will obviously not be featured soon,

They will most likley start to rise in next 4-3 years or so.

This Pool is look over EVERY console that will be realeased later on in the future.

Digital distribution is in breif ,

I know that PC gamers are used to this, steam... ect. But a new trend is starting to arise in console gaming slowly, Downloading full games instead of attributing yourself the casual CD. To some people this is a totaly new thing as for others it is simply meaning less.

But this pool has much more of a focus over the real question-

Ex: You can still buy Music CD, but who realy does? instead, most download them and in this case most illigally download them via FrostWire, Limewire...ect Do you think Video games will end up being so simply pirated, just like music... btw I have ME2 on my PC but didint pay for it.

I don't think we don't need next gen console ever. With the 3d gaming and the Sony Wand coming to the PS3 i think its more than what we all need seriously.... Console is about gaming only not others thing....

They'll have to wait until more people have strong broadband connections before going ALL digital distribution, but I could see there being an option to download most, if not all, games next gen.

Not everyone is online with their console, and also a lot of younger people won't have access to a credit/debit card, so won't be able to purchase stuff online. Obviously that's what the points system is in place for with the 360 and Wii (not sure about PS3), but it means that the kids will still have to go to the store to buy their points.

I can see maybe the option of DD for pretty much every game, but I think if possible, I'll still buy the CDs. I reckon it would be such an ordeal if the console broke down to make sure you got all your games back.

You missed an important "No" option. No, because it's too soon. DD will happen in the future, but the next gen consoles will probably not be ENTIRELY DD. Even PC, the platform which has embraced DD the most heartily, isn't going to stop having optical drives.

Have people not realise that DVDs and Blu-Ray are not "CDs" yet? The only thing they have in common is that they are stored on an "optical disc", not a CD. CD refers strictly to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD

There is also the "used games market" to factor into consideration. If all next-gen consoles are exclusively digital-based, it would kill off the entire used game market from existence (no form of trading possible, due to keycode registration and one-time activation protocols). Unless somehow, the companies decide to allow duplicate use of the code, but active on one system at any time. In which case, would lead to digital piracy on home consoles. Not something any for-profit organization would want. /End Thread

In a few years, games will stop evolving because of technical limitations. That's why we have generations. You may have this thought track now, but in a few years, you'll be wanting an Eighth Generation.

From a business stand point DD is better in every single way. Will Gamespot/bestbuy/walmart ect allow this to happen is the real question. Because if its up to the system markers its really a no brainer.

It takes so long to download things, putting a disc in the machine is much quicker and more convenient. Not saying downloading technology won't get better, just not at this point.

More like depends on how fast of an internet speed you can afford. As of now high speed internet is just to expensive and not enough people have it. Like I said the future is DD there's no doubt about it but physical media isn't going any where any time soon.

It might not be expensive for you, but a lot of people can't afford that and for them they have priorities that come first. And yeah I think 50 bucks a month is a bit pricey.

People who buy games then resell in a week are complete idiots, don't blow a bunch of money unless you are sure you want it. I have been using Steam for 3 years and never regretted a purchase because I use my head. Dave Ramsey's financial planning really comes in handy with a fixed budget, just plan your purchases, borrow from a friends before you buy if need be, and digital distribution really has no drawbacks outside of user stupidity/incompetence

Next-gen won't be all out DD, but we will have direct downloads of new games available on Day One. Since the default hard drives will be larger, these direct downloads will become a much more appealing option than they are today.

I'm not sure I'll ever download something from Nintendo, though, until they realize some of us actually like playing games we digitally purchased on more than one console. The next generation needs to be very flexible on this option, like Steam. I can easily take a disc with me anywhere I want, and that's a big advantage.

They're are a lot more important things than internet. People have to put food, house payments or rent, clothes, heat, gasoline, electricity all before internet. Bills add up.

No. PS3 has shown that Bluray is the future. So games being 20GB+ and that would take way to long to DL and would require TB harddrive

I don't think next-gen would be all digital distribution simply because people still prefer a physical case to display on their shelf. A row of cases on a shelf is far more interesting than a list of icons on a monitor or TV screen.
The point on download limits is also an issue, perhaps not for Americans but surely for Australians. Assuming that graphics will continue to get 'better' and more detailed/resource-intensive, a typical game will probably need a good few GB of storage to play. Storage itself is not a problem, but the download limit is.

Local governments would more than likely oppose 100% digital distribution, and I assume the Gaming lobbies will do their part to convince politicans to go against such a move; after all if it is 100% digital distribution you cut out the retailer whom generates valuable tax dollars.

Games are getting alot bigger and internet connections are not getting alot faster. We are not ready to download 50GB+ games right now nor are harddrives cheap enough to have a massive library of next gen titles that will require lots of data.

How about "no because console's aren't ready for it yet" ?

I don't see DD being a hit on consoles unless they have regular sales like Steam AND if every system has a massive hard drive.

No. Downloading games that are tens... possibility moving into the hundreds next gen... of gigabytes is completely impractical with many internet connections. Especially with some service providers adding monthly bandwidth caps.

It is also a question of pricing and distribution of the console. Today the resellers do not make any money on the sale of the console. The margins for the reseller are to be found in selling games and other console related equipment. Going all DD on games will give the resellers no motivation for selling the console. Changing the distribution system for a console is very expensive. My guess is that you will find blu-ray in your local store and a DD alternative on LIVE/PSN, like Steam and PC games work today.

Steam has pretty much turned PC game distribution into a digital medium, along with Direct 2 Drive. It will definitely be pushed more next generation on consoles since it was so successful on PC, but the disk option will still be present.

digital disribution is the way to go as HDD become larger and cheaper for the consoles. pc gamers have large HDD and can afford DD via steam and D2D, etc. However DD will not completely outphase a hard copy of games as it is clearly seen that people still do like having a hard copy of the game, especially those without a internet connection. however even gamestop and bestbuy are offering DD, as well as full retail games on xbl and psn as there is a rising interest in the format.

I'm not sure if games will regularly be ~50gb next generation... I suppose it depends on when the next generation begins, but as of right now, multi-disc DVD games are a rarity outside of RPGs. It's true that PS3 exclusives often use up as much Blu-ray space as possible, but you could say this is intentional because PS3 exclusives have no digital download mechanism (and there is, therefore, little reason not to).

I'm not sure even PC gamers can regularly handle downloading 50gb games on Steam next generation. If Microsoft goes Blu-ray and multiplatform developers start to intentionally max out dual-layer BR discs, PC gamers may end up being forced to purchase Blu-Ray drives and head back to retail to get their games.

This. Similar to Steam now, giving it as an option, but not forcing it on consumers for large titles.

I think they will still have DVD/Blue Ray players and solid media etc but digital distribution will be a major element.

I personally would prefere everything to go digital ultimztely.
