The argument is "COMPRESSION WILL MAKE DVD LAST FOREVER!" Not "DVD is a better format than Blu Ray!"

You're out of line. That's not even a valid argument. "My 7.9 gigs and SD picture quality trump your 25-50 gigs and 1080p picture quality!"

as for the topic, compressions seems to be doing fine, GTA4 will prove that.  The only real advantages are audio and maybe in the future the extra space will matter

What did UMD try to replace.  The only reason that was made was for use in the PSP... which is still being used.  Don't be a fanboy and just admit that blu-ray is a good thing.

This is System Wars. Not Format Wars.

And this thread is on the sour side of spam and no, I will not take it on toast.

the problem with your argument is taht umd is made specifically for psp, where as the blu ray will be implimented into much more than just a console. Stand alone players will carry it and even pcs will have BR drives. UMD was never meant to be a major format like BR is suppose to be.

Blu-ray is good. But here's the ultimate question: Do we need it yet?16bitkevin

That is not the ultimate question: that appears to be the only question.

Games will not fit compactly into 7.9 gigs forever...unless the compression curve magically blasts past the format curve. Who knows. That's what you guys are supposed to be discussing, not "BLU RAY TEH FALE"

Especially since Blu Ray is outselling HD-DVD...what? 9-1? The picture quality is brilliant. Blu Ray won the HD format wars. HD-DVD will soon not be supported by retailers. PS3 owners are gobbling the movies up, believe me. I appreciate the extra footroom it gives developers and just allowing me to play the games is worth the feature.

Plus, I can't scratch the damn things. Can't do it.

So, HD format wars=no argument. Game format wars=hypothetical, based on how far compression techniques will take us.

That is not as close as blu-ray or hd-dvd. Still in USA they will be alienating people with low speed connections and even nowadays high speed connections as people are not as willing on waiting for hours (or days) for a 20GB HD movie. also think about worldwide and emergent markets.

It provides for over 6x the storage capacity (assuming you're talking dual-layer versus dual-layer, 7.9 gigs contained in DVD-9) and allows for 1920x1080 versus 640x480.

And you're trying to tell me that this is not a big jump. Hmm. Interesting.

Yeah but that's just plain common sense. DVD didn't take over VHS in a "week"(not literally speaking) either.

I don't understand why some certain fanboys are against bluray, i mean its just good for all of us and dvd ain't gonna last forever anyways.
