A 4-8gb flash cart would provide obvious advantages over a 25gb Blu Ray Disc, and I'm not just talking about load times. You can stream levels and textures in real time from cart.

hmm carts are ok i guess. load times nearly non existent....no installation....no disc scratching
it could be a welcome feature aslong as they are able to hold big capacities for top notch audio and visuals and cutscenes

Of course not.
Flash = streamed data.
Bluray =/= streamed data.
A DVD only holds 4GB, which is fine. An 8gb flash cart would be twice the capacity of a DVD.

Most Blu-ray games only use 4GB for the game and the music and stuff. The few that use much more fill it with junk files. 80% of this gen's games could be put on a 8GB flash.
don't think we'll see carts for next-gen consoles... if something new doesn't come up, i see probably Blu-ray being the main format next-gen...

Blueray would be really bad. It would mean mandatory installations onto a hard disk and long load times.
If next-gen gaming used 8gb flash cards, it would be twice the capacity of a DVD, there would be no need for a hard disk because data streams from flash, and load times would be non-existant.
So with the price of flash carts going down, it seems like the only logical choice for consoles to go back to carts. I for one will welcome the return of the best-selling game meduim to the console world. Who wants to wait for their game to load anyway. Discuss. litewoNot going to happen. Flash is still a thousand times more expensive than optical. BD cost per GB: ~$0.002 Flash cost per GB: ~$2.50 Not to mention that optical media is produced as demand dictates but with the longer lead time for flash demand has to predicted which can lead to under production (not enough product to meet demand) or over production (too much product produced, product goes to waste).

I understand now. You edited the post I quoted as well, explaining why such is such. Before that, your post seemed sarcastic to me since there was no clarification, leaving a possibility for sarcasm.
I have been on System Wars too long. :P
Flash would need to come down in raw price really quickly for cart based games to make it into the next gen systems.
I am sure it will eventually, but I think prices are still much too high for flash or similar storage to become the standard next gen.

A single layer DVD holds more than 4 gigs, and all consoles have hit dual layered games, with the 360 having almost all dual layer DVD games.[QUOTE="Hexagon_777"][QUOTE="Tony-Harrison"]A 4gb flash carts would provide obvious advantages over a 25gb Blu Ray Discs, and I'm not just talking about load times.Tony-Harrison

A retail DVD holds about 9GB. DVD +/- R only hold 4GB. there are also DVD-18 that can store more than 17GB

Just as with CD and DVD, BD read speeds will improve quickly over time. BD has a lower base rotational speed than DVD so a higher stable X rating can be achieved. In the near future we will see BD ROMs at 24X 108MBps, meeting and exceeding the fastest read times of flash today.Blueray would be really bad. You do know that the only reason the PS3 has these issues is because of the drive speed (only 2x), and not blu-ray itself? With an 8x BR drive, the games would not require any installation at all to run smooth, and an 8x BR drive will be cheap enough by the time next gen rolls around.

That wouldn't be too bad, then I would have to worry about scratching my games :P
If you want Piracy to be a peice of cake sure :SPC360Wii
wouldn't it be harder because just the console's makr could make the cartridges?

next gen not necessarily. they should have much faster blu-ray drives that are also much much cheaper than the one in the PS3. 12X-16X would be ideal mind...8X would be a little slow.
also if MS and sony continue down their usual path then 8GB wouldnt be anyhere near enough for a game. that extra space in blu-ray would actually be needed.
solid storage is still nowhere near cheap enough for game distribution. remember that a game purchase has to cover the things in the box as well as the licence fee for the console and the development costs of the game. ure not just buying a box, disc and manual, ure paying for a bit fo the development cost and a right to use the game).
it does have its advnatages. its vastly superior to disc drives when it comes to loading data. but it doesent offer good bang per buck.
as nintendo and other devs on other platforms have also shown, its possible to use discs in such a way that loading is very short or well hidden. the POP games last gen had no loading screens for example. neither did zelda WW and fzeroGX could load a track in about 3 seconds (not an exaggeration...it was that fast).
[QUOTE="angelkimne"]Maybe... I think SSD's are the future for storage.skektekStorage yes, distribution no.For Distribution I think Discs still have another decade or so in them (2 more gens ??).
They've already made prototype 300GB Blu-Ray discs.

I don't have a second account. :cry:
Funny how every one rides on my little joke rather than responding to my question, though. :P
I wish it was true, but I doubt it will happen.
