If m$ adopts a more digital distribution(theoretical) favored approach next gen along with trying to make everyone go all 'minority report' with this kinect bs and their preference for everything online, will they just flatout lose there entire core base to sony?

after all, consoles and console gaming to me and alot of other people are about games and m$ seem to be trying to move away from good 'ol games in favor of moving everybody and their nan's over to online killfests and armabuse.

edit:this is related to recent next gen xbox news i read on here, and while i know that it is far from fact it does fit m$ casual leanings of late,so this thread is hugely speculative i know but why not, this is sw after all.

Since we know little to nothing aboutt these next gen consoles, I'd say this thread is about a year or two ahead of schedule.

I'm leaning towards the next Xbox based on the probability it will use an AMD APU (likely in crossfire mode with a discrete GPU).

MS's R&D budget went up nearly 40% last quarter alone in the Xbox division so they're outspending the competition. While Sony has stated they aren't spending nearly as much as they did with the PS3.

I will purchase whatever has the games I want to play.

If the Nextbox is how it currently is the latter half of this gen then I'm not getting it.

If Sony continues how they are going with the PS3 then I will purchase the PS4.

PS4, based on MS insisting on Kinect being integral to the next xbox.

Poor Sony, they make a terriffic console and pretty much gives it away. Then you got the 360 which is much crappier and alot more expensieve. So Microsoft got much much bigger revenues from 360 (because of being alot more expensieve) at a much lesser cost(cause it's a garbage console)

I'm gonna have to lean towards PS4 at the present, because we know nothing about what the consoles will be like, but Sony has consistently brought the games over the past three gens. Say what you want about PS3 being last in sales or being overpriced at launch or whatever else people don't like about it, the fact that it's got more quality exclusives in less time is a pretty clear indicator over which one is more interested in continuing a strong first party tradition. If anything, we'll have even less third party exclusives next gen, so first party is what's going to distinguish the systems' libraries.

Ps4 The cell technology is there. So if Sony were to take what they've already learned, and further improved upon the cell tech ,and then coupled it with a lot of memory and a top of the line GPU then Sony can end up having a BEAST on their hands for an affordable price. You never know. But there are MANY things that Sony can do, and many options that they can take. So we will have to wait and see. It will be up to Sony But I have no doubt that they will deliver as they are the only company right now that listens to the fans and is catering to hard core gamers. So I'm going with Sony next gen over Microsoft regardless because I would also never ever want to miss out on next gen versions of Uncharted and God of War either lol ect..... and all the other awesome Sony exclusives that I really loved this gen....Plus all the classic franchises like Jak and Dexter and Sly Cooper

I don't even think the original developers of the cell, IBM, have even worked on the technology in several years. So Sony is going to have to fund to update the technology. And they've stated publicly they don't have the money for the PS4 they spent on the PS3.

I'm almost more curious what they end up doing than MS because their options seem more limited.

That's a sad perspective but whatever... to each their own. For me it will come down to games and service. Im more than satisfied with my 360mom this generation and as much as id love to give ms my business, but they have to earn it. I owe no company any loyalty when it comes to my money... its up to them to make me part with it. An idea system wars struggles with.

If Wii U is comparable in power to them, then it. If not, PS4. Better be backwards compatible with PS3.

599 - 399 ........? i dont get it? how can MS be more expensive? in terms of what? production costs? no. actual retail price? no. ummm....you got me. sony had probs last gen, ms has probs this gen. everybody makes mistakes bro...sometimes with electronics all you can do is fix it on the fly and learn from your mistakes. i can pretty much garauntee that MS will have a wuality console next gen like they initially had. RROD pretty much was a kick in the groin that they do not want to repeat, im sure.

It looks to me like Sony and Microsoft are going to plunge themselves into the casual market, leaving the Wii U as the only core gamer console.

The real question is Playstation 5 or Dreamcast 2? :P

Agreed. I'm enjoying gaming right now, so I am in no hurry for a new system, but I'm sure to be interested in any new system from either of the 3 big name console manufacturers. Its too hard to say which hardware will be the best, especially since we no nothing about it, so I'll have to wait to pass judgement on that. I just hope Microsoft does their homework and doesn't release another faulty system at launch. I'm sure they will do their R&D to prevent it though. It also doesn't mean the best tech wins the console race anymore.

Yes. Nintendo did exactly that and struck casual gold. Microsoft especially wants to go after this market with their Kinect initiatives and recent rumors suggest they want to totally integrate Kinect into their next console. Sony's success in the 90s and early 2000s had a lot to do with going after alternative casual markets, and they may want to go back to that strategy after this gen's focus on core gamers. Do no expect their consoles do be powerhouses. I will not be surprised if there is a role reversal and the Wii U plays the part the HD twins, while the HD twins become the casual twins.

MS will not ram Kinect down your throats, there's no need to suspect as much as right now it's nothing more than a peripheral gaming device, it is not the Wii where they made motion controls mandatory. Plus MS will have to seriously redo how they do digital distribution, games are more expensive for download than they are for retail, it should really be the other way around, like Steam.

Which ever way they go they will be $ure to launch their lea$t updated ver$ion fir$t. That way they can charge more money each time they "revi$e" their con$ole$. Live will $ure to be more money because of all the DD traffic and whatnot. The worst part of that is people will pay it. And stop going M$ and not using $ony or Nintendough.

A download only platform wold be plain foolish next gen, and out right 599$ level of console sale suicide

Nextbox would atleast have to have DVD support, with download to harddrive being heavily pushed.

If you think that something like Kinect is going to play a role in like, 10 years from now, you're sadly mistaken. Nobody's going to care about Kinect anymore by about 2013 or 2014. Things like that die out within people.

Plus it really shouldn't cost much money for Sony or Microsoft to upgrade their next gen consoles to play games in like, 1080p. Microsoft made the 360 a lot more powerful than the original Xbox, & they only charged us $400 for it.

Well since we don't know ANYTHING about these systems, it's all just speculation isn't it?

But I will say this though, in order for MS to get me to buy a new xbox they are going to have to make some CHANGES! BIG TIME! (drop the online MP fee, get more 1st party devs, stop Kinect foucs ect..)

If Sony handles the PS4 just like they are handling the PS3 right now than PS4 purchase confirmed!

consoles wont go dd that would be a bad move. Retailers might not even sell there console anymore. Retailers have all this space set a side for gaming and is ms goes dd then it will take away sales from them and they wont want to support that system. look at pc in retail at most eb games i go to pc does not even have any wall space anymore just a tiny shelf in the back of the store.

whatever they are doing they need to hurry up and do it. i'm pretty sick of this console gen.

i have played more pc stuff in the last 3 months than in the previous 5 years.

if they still want my software $$$ they need to get a move on.

Hard to say which one I'll buy or when at this point. I think I'll avoid a launch purcahse and wait for a price drop and a decent amount of games to release if I do buy one.

Basically, this gen has cemented that Sony are more focused on games than MS, and MS is more focused on subscription services. Makes sense from their perspective, but I need another recurring bill like I need a staple in my eye.

The motion controls aren't mandatory, but the majority of first party games have required Kinect since the release of the peripheral. At least Nintendo puts out good games that use their motion controls. I would not be the least bit surprised if Microsoft puts out a Kinect console for their next gen entry.
