Here's the intresting parts:

One quarter of consumers are interested in buying 3D TVs, Nielsen found, but that number drops to 12% once those queried had the chance to actually try out the hardware for themselves. The majority were impressed with the 3D visuals, but fully half of the group complained that the glasses were uncomfortable or inconvenient to wear.

That's not the worst of it, though: a whopping 89% of Nielsen's guinea-pigs were aggravated at not being able to do anything else while wearing the glasses, and a number were annoyed that glasses from one manufacturer won't necessarily work with TVs from another.

yeah Imo there is so much wrong with them its crazy.. And the biggest issue is that it just doesn't work well enough for how well it works.. Yeah its kinda 3D and everything but its not the experience that it should be with the money you invest. And not being able to go on the interenet or etc. while your watching tv must be the worst.

Why buy a 3D-ready TV when you can save a few thousand bucks and not have to wear those idiotic glasses? 2D looks just as good, anyway.

There are a lot of variable that come into play when discussing value of 3DTVs. They cost a pretty large sum, though nowhere near what people here tend to claim, so you'd naturally expect the average person to be uninterested for only a few perks (seeing as there isn't much available to watch in 3D in the first place). Once you see these TVs go for $1000 or less, with at least 2 pairs of glasses included(or instead a $25 or lower price tag), many people will change their minds. People here seem to overlook that you can still use 3DTVs without the 3D functionality, so it's only a matter of time before these replace regular HDTVs. Imagine what people thought when HDTVs were humungous in size, priced at $2000, and there were few actual HD movies/TV shows to watch.

Oh, and I like how he plugged the 3DS at the end :P

Goggles. Not surprised, I have called the failure of 3-d the whole time. Death pending for the 3rd time, when will companies learn.

kuu2

I don't think 3D is going to "die out" this time around. Even if it doesn't become completely mainstream in the living room, which I've even said the glasses are a stumbling block to, it will still probably be supported as an optional part of the experience. Similar to surround sound. Meanwhile 3D might become very popular on the single user mobile device front, where "glasses-free" 3D technologies can be deployed without their limited viewing angle posing a serious problem.

no.

but it's been awhile. first experience with contacts wasn't too great.

besides, I don't want to develop a necessity for them. it seems that people who constantly use them rely on them, could be wrong, but my vision isn't really far-gone. yet.

I don't mind the glasses, and I love the 3D tech so far (Nvidia 3D Vision at least.) I'll never understand the hate for the glasses, unless it's non-stereoscopic ones like in the movies. That 3D tech sucks.

All 3D technologies are "stereoscopic" (eg. they deliver a separate image to each eye). Do you mean Anaglyph (red/blue) 3D?

sorry, I meant shutter glasses. I was talking about the crappy polarized glasses non-IMAX theaters give you for those movies.

any form of 3d that requires glasses isnt going to take off.

even box office sales are slumping hardcore for 3d movies... consumers are increasingly paying to see the 2d versions of films over the 3d version. The gimmick was fun, but its beginning to wear thin.

Just more proof 2008 was the last good year for TVs. I'm sure in the near future we can have something fresh as new tech comes to the market.

Was at bestbuy yesterday and they had about 4 different 3d enabled tvs with glasses, Sony, Samsung, Toshiba...ect they all hurt my eyes and they all sucked. I specially love the fact that any form of light to the sides, or back will reflect off these things and distract you.

Pioneer Elite Kuro it was the last of some of the best TVs on the market. Still to this day the Elite Kuro from 2008stands above the others. Also 2009 was a bad year due to this: "Pioneer confirms that it's leaving the TV business" :(

no way would i consider buying a 3d tv until they can do it well without the need for glasses and at a reasonable price. buying one with today's soon to be obsolete glasses technology is like the ppl that bought a laser disc player.

Keep telling yourself that you don't need them until you hit someone while driving... Back on topic, I personally think outside of 3D movie theaters, the whole 3D thing is a big gimmick and until they can make 3D TVs without requiring the glasses while keeping an affordable price point, there is no point in buying those TVs.

I went to two 3D movies and the glasses didn't bother me at all. I think 3D is great too. On the other hand, I don't know if it will be worth getting a 3DTV for this gen or just wait until next gen when there'll hopefully be a lot more 3D content, it'll make the jump to next gen more significant, and maybe there'll be glasses-free 3DTV by then at a reasonable price, which would be nice but it's not essential to me.

Don't know why people are busting on 3D. They either didn't see a movie that used it extremely well or they are just hating. I know when I seen Jack Ass 3D preview it didn't even look 3D.

I watched my first movie (Resident Evil After Life 3D)a few days ago in new gen 3D... It was totally awesome. I will from now on watch any new movie in 3D only if done for 3D in mind.

But I will however not buy a 3D set up for some time... Given the fact that very few movies are even made to wow you in 3D and that it costs a fortune.

Simply and perfectly said.

And it's a good point in the article about not being able to do other stuff. No one exactly sits there and just views the screen, they fidget and do other stuff.

I thought it was a little bit fatiguing and uncomfortable to wear 3d glasses in the cinema when watching avatar. And yes I also think it looks a little silly to have speciality glasses just for watching the TV.

Plus I heard these glasses were expensive, so what happens when you have friends and other guests round?

Especialy when some of them aren't proper 3D like Clash of the Titans. Wish I saw the 2d version of that.

i don't get the 3d hate, what it makes me think is that you have not spent any time using it.

i was sold the first time i put the glasses on.

this is 1st gen 3d tech, not being able to see that the glasses will get smaller, lighter and better over time is pretty short-sighted.

i still have not picked up the glasses that go with my tv yet because of lack of software but once that is over i am all over it.

I love the 3D effect and I gladly wear the 3D glasses to have an optimal effect :/ That said, no, not everyone hates them oO But it does suck, that the glasses aren't compatible with each other, but there are 3rd party glasses which are, so no problem with that

Has people here actually priced 3d tvs lately? I'm just curious. Either some of you haven't priced them or just want a visio 50" at $500.
