If you read the news you know that MS started a research division after the 360 launch. This division is trying to come up with new hardware that they can put into Pc's and their next Xbox. Their first bit of news has trickled out via a German tech magazine (DurGenzine) They speak of a new processor that they are working on, but it is a physics processor. They say it is as powerful as the current 360's main processor, but will be dedicated to physics work alone. They also state they expect it to triple in power before they put it into anything.

They also mention that in 5 years time they expect to have a main processor that will be 4X as powerful as the current best processors on the market (intel quad core). They state they are working with intel to make a chip that does what devs needs in order to make games bigger and better. They have enlisted over 34 games developers to help them make these processors do what the devs want.

Sounds like MS really wants to make an uber system next time. I just hope it does not cost to much!

The interview is over 9 pages long and in German (which I speak) If you want a copy...good luck...I barely was able to get one sent to me.

What does this matter? This better not mean two years from now a new Xbox comes, MS should stop trying to be different, cause the mainstay for consoles is an expected 5 years, not four...

that sounds good and Intel Quad Core processors are so much better than the cell, quad core duo was made with gaming in mind.

The next Xbox will not cost $600. You think Microsoft wants to pull a Sony?

In 5 years' time, that technology will be dirt cheap. Maybe the console will cost $600 to make, but it sure won't retail for $600.

I believed you until you said a) it's in german and b) there's no way any of us will ever be able to read this ourselves.

Sounds like BS.

The Xbox retailed for $300 at the begging (I can't remember I think that was the price). It costed like 400 dollars to make. Now the X360 costs like $450 tomake. Consoles are getting more expensive to produce. Prices won't go down.

Where are these six pages? Why does he say at the end we probably shouldn't bother trying to find this because there's no way we will?

Come on, man. A magazine in a foreign language, has a huge story on microsoft's next console in an article which we wont be able to find because it's apparently tough to get hold of?

Please...

Mark my words, no future-generation console will cost $600 (inflation-adjusted) after seeing Sony's woes. It's not about how much the console costs to make, it's about how much the market will pay, and the market has demonstrated it will not pay $600.

They actually WILL be cheaper. Microsoft announced that they will be making their own processors for their next machine. This came about after a realisation that although they've come up with many clever ways to make the gaming division profitable, through xbox live and the creation of nifty little accessories like the wi-fi thiny which makes your controller work with your PC, they're still not taking in enough money to please stockholders.

And this is down to the losses they take on the console. They're simply too great, and just like with the first xbox, they've been trying desperately to strike deals to lower the prices they pay for their processors, but the likes of IBM will never agree to that because they realise that without them, there is no xbox.

For the next console, they'll be manufacturing their own processor.

We always see big claims about future-generation consoles at this early stage. But as always, time will tell.

Microsoft learned from it's Xbox and 360, and no it is too early. Microsoft better not pull the plug on the 360 when the new Xbox is released. I am still fuming over Micros choice of discontinuing the original Xbox.

Every console company starts work on their next system after the launch of their "current" system. These systems take years of development in order to become the products we play on. I am happy they are working on something new. That tells me they are in this game for the long haul.

Wow, I was not trying to start a flame war. I was simply relaying info about a article I read. There is no big news in the article which is why MS has not said anything. None of the tech in the article is even close to being done so why would they bother announcing anything?

Ok this is what I want from the next M$ console : new controller but not too different , 100% Backward compatibility + making 360 games look and run better like upscaling , being able to run Crysis level games with no problem and a decent price tag I also think they need to get a new storage device like BluRay and a mandatory hard drive ( come on it's 2010 were talking about)

As much as I love my 360, I PRAY that thier next console isn't just about power. Make something that isn't just waggle gimmick (wii-mote) with amazing graphics and I'll sign on board.

Sounds very interesting. A processor totally made with games in mind by MS and Intel sounds like it is going legendary.

The only thing I know is true from that article is that MS is going to include developers througout the design process. For all the crap MS takes about being trash or how they just rip off other companies, they figured out you should include the people making the games in the design process before Sony did.

Physics Processing Units aren't new. SLi or Crossfire GPUs can handle the same function. And when dual core GPUs come out...
