Nintendo sees skyward sales on Black Friday

Super Mario 3D Land and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword helped Nintendo to a successful kickoff of the holiday sales season.

The new Nintendo 3DS game, Super Mario 3D Land, which landed in stores Nov. 11, has become the fastest selling portable Mario game in company history, selling more than 500,000 units since launch, says Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.

Meanwhile, the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, released for the Nintendo Wii on Sunday, Nov. 20, has sold 535,000 copies since its U.S. launch, making it hte fastest-selling Zelda game ever, he says.


These strong new releases also drove sales of Nintendo 3DS and Wii systems, Fils-Aime says. Last week's 3DS sales tripled (by 325%) compared to sales the week of Nov. 6, the week before Super Mario 3D Land debuted; the week of its debut, sales rose 49% over the previous week.

It was a big mistake to not have Mario Kart out by black friday imo... If they think THOSE games do well, Mario kart is a much bigger seller these days than either of those, The numbers for that game had it been out would have been crazy

So i would expect another holiday domination by the Wii with the 360 right behind it with Kinect.

Considering they have the app store and Angry birds, and easily the best OS in the phone industry, I'd say they are alright without the fat plumber

Hmmm well good for them I guess. Right now I wish I could be a bit more excited, but SS is not shaping up to be a 10 as I had hoped. I hope things get a bit better. So far its a great game, but it feels a bit like a jack of all trades and a master of none.

So the 3DS is likely to hit 1.5 million in November worldwide. Wow. What a recovery. How large is its lead on the Vita going to get to before they're both available everywhere? 15 million?

Also, 500k in NA for Mario 3D Land, 450k in Japan, and that's without Europe. Wow, talk about no need to make iPhone apps, there is no way they'd ever make the cool $40-$50 million they just made off of NA/JP in two weeks off $1-$5 apps

Love seeing the Wii is still doing well on Black Friday, too bad these sales for the Wii wont last much longer.

I was only responding to FloYD on how Apple isn't trying sooohard to court Nintendo and how bad they want Mario.

With Zelda SS, Mario 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7 likely to net them an easy $200 million each (or even more), I don't see why peopel doubted it.

Think about it, if Mario Kart 7 sells half as well as Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii it will hit 10 million units. That is about $400 million. They lost, what $1 billion? Talk about making bank quick.

It is going to make the Vita launch sort of difficult for Sony. People in the US, outside of the die hards that buy every system, tend to watch their spendings after the holiday. $170 w/game vs $250 w/no game or memory card? Hmm...You'd think sony would have learned from the mistakes of the psp.

Those sales are you could say golden. And with Mario Kart next week Nintendo seems to be back on the right track headed into next year

I'm happy with the sales, I would like to see the sales of playstation and xbox, to compare them :)

All the 3DS needed was a Mario title and with another Mario coming it will dominate the handheld market going into 2012.

Well Mario was predicted that it would sell so well, but kudos either way. It greatly boosted the 3DS sales despite it already selling remarkable well. Zelda however I am surprised by. Zelda games (even the HH ones) sell well but 530,000 in one week? Thats really strong sales especially considering the longevity Nintendo first party games have, especially Mario and Zelda. I am very happy that Nintendo is finally marketing their games properly and getting the word of mouth out their.

Best Black Friday for Wii is the REALLY crazy news to me.

I wonder how much of that is due to former Wii owners buying another, like I did.
