With the PS4 and Xbox One both releasing within the next week and a half, it's easy to forget that the next generation of handheld gaming began quite a while back, with Nintendo's 3DS.

On the whole, the 3DS has been a runaway success after some initial difficulties: it has consistently topped hardware and software charts, third parties have embraced it, Nintendo has been able to grow the platform into much more than it was at its launch nearly three years ago, and Nintendo's first party support for it has been legendary. This year, especially, will probably go down for it as one of the best years for any systems in gaming history.

This thread is for 3DS owners only. No, people who have played the console but don't own it, please try to refrain from answering. But for those of you who bought Nintendo's newest handheld, what do you think about the system? What are your expectations from it? What do you expect going forwards?

Also, if you would like to, please answer the following questions:

  • What model of the system do you have?
  • How many games do you have for it?
  • What is your favorite game on the system?
  • What accessories do you own for it?
  • What game are you looking forward to the most?

My answers to the questions:

  • Launch 3DS OG model
  • Er, counting all digital and physical games, probably upwards of 30
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • None, though I use my own DS Lite protective case for it EDIT: I forgot I have a charging cradle for it, as well as the system stand that came with Kid Icarus
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Bravely Default

  • 3DS XL (light blue model), black 3DS
  • 6 retail games, many more digital. Have owned quite a few others but ended up selling them after beating them or realizing I wasn't enjoying them,
  • Pokémon Y or Super Mario 3D Land
  • nada
  • Smash Bros, Bravely Default, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

I've spent so much time with it and the games. There are some problems, one analog stick, 3D not working out of a specific area, and the top screen being a different resolution than the bottom, neither of which are HD. It's all fine though because the games are awesome.

LOVE it and play it more than my other systems by a large margin. So many great games that I can't focus on just one game at a time.

  • What model of the system do you have? Red XL and Gold Zelda ALBW XL.
  • How many games do you have for it? 25 or so.
  • What is your favorite game on the system? Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
  • What accessories do you own for it? Charging cradle, holding stand.
  • What game are you looking forward to the most? Bravely Default.

  • 3DS XL, Blue color
  • 4, have a good amount of DS games, too. I avidly avoid getting anything digital on the device, tho.ugh that'll have to end once I get to buying Ace Attorney
  • Fire Emblem Awakening (Pokemon Y has to be up there, too)
  • Charger, and uh... Stylus, lol?
  • Super Smash Bros. Some of the JRPGs have me intrigued to look into, but besides that there's not much in the future that interests me as far as I can tell. Most of what interests me has already passed. I still have to dip back and grab another 4 or so more games that are already out.

3D sucks. I'll start with that. The system is good. Coming from having a Vita first probably made me appreciate the UI and hardware design of the Vita more. The hardware to a small amount, the UI to a large amount. The XL version certainly is better than the normal. In the end, the system itself manages to be satisfactory in its design.

The system shines in its library. Its certainly not all for me (hence why it took this long for it have enough to convince me to buy it), but the ones that do certainly made the purchase worth it. I choose you, Mega Charizard Y. Use solarbeam!

Most of my complaints for the system can't really be fixed. Or I just can't see Nintendo fixing them. So I don't have high expectations for things getting better. With the direct coming up, hopefully more of what I want will be announced.

My bro has a standard 3DS (black) and only a couple games (Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Pokemon X; both retail).

As I've only played Animal Crossing: New Leaf, I can't decide on what my favorite is.

Only looking forward to games already out, but I haven't played yet (SF 64 3D, Street Fighter IV are a couple).

The System had a slow start for me. Honestly, I didn't play it all that much.
This changed with the release of Pokémon X tho, been playing that daily since it released.

With Bravely Default and the new Zelda just around the corner I'll be play my 3DS a lot in the next few months.
And how knows, maybe Europe will actually get a SMTIV release.

Biggest downside: Nintendo's fucking region locking policy. Bunch of ******

Too freaking true, they are evn blocking out loopholes these days (which is a shame, because they did little to nothing about Freeloader for GameCube).

  1. Flame Red and launch 3DS Aqua.
  2. Jeez, like 12ish.
  3. Mario 3D Land followed by either New Super Mario 2 or Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
  4. None.
  5. Link to the Past 2 aka A Link Between Worlds.

I'm not much of a handheld gamer, I'd much rather play using my HDTVs and 7.1/5.1 surround sound. I like these machines for Traveling/Dentist office wait. A lot of great games come to handhelds, but for me it's just a preference and time. I have the technology, I want to see what I consider the creme de la creme.

It's a damn shame.
If you don't want to bring a certain game to another region, fine.
But at least give us the option to buy it on the Japanese/American market.

Ugh..

  1. 3DS Aqua
  2. About Off the top of my head i wanna say 8
  3. So tough, I'll just list my five favorites (Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, Pokemon Y, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D, Legend of Zelda OoT3D) my other games are New Leaf (Very good and addiciting) Libeartion Maiden (Very fun , very short) and Dillons Rolling Western (its alright, getting repetitive at this point, taking an extended break from it. Has some good gameplay and charm though) I also used to haev Paper Mario: Sticker Star, but got rid of it, that game is nothing like Thousand Year Door. I was so dissapointed, they just did almost everything wrong.
  4. None, if I ever saw Circle pad pro for sale, I might get it for my replays of MGS3.
  5. LoZ: Link between Worlds, Fire Emblem Awakening (haven't go it yet so i can still look forward to it:P) and of course SSB!

Overall I think it is an amazing system, I hope with the miiverse integraion that is supposed to be coming, they will push online a bit more. Also, the VC on there is terribad though.

  • What model of the system do you have?
Like my Wii U, I got it on launch, and it's black.
  • How many games do you have for it?
10 physical games. I got a bunch of eShop games too. Also planning to get 3 more games by year's end (Pokemon Y, Animal Crossing and Zelda).
  • What is your favorite game on the system?
    Super Mario 3D Land.
  • What accessories do you own for it?
I only have the circle pad, and I only bought it because it was on clearance for cheap. I have never used it though (I own Resident Evil too, but it actually doesn't need it, it works fine without).
  • What game are you looking forward to the most?
Pokemon Y and Animal Crossing is in my backlog. And I look forward to Zelda A Link between Worlds.

What model of the system do you have? 2DS :)

How many games do you have for it? Just 3 so far, Pokemon X, Fire Emblem Awakening and Mario 3D Land. However I am making good use of it's backwards compatability to buy many great DS games I never experienced: both Advance Wars, both Zeldas, NSMB, Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, etc :D

What is your favorite game on the system? Fire Emblem for sure. Including DS games, probably Advance Wars.

What accessories do you own for it? None.

What game are you looking forward to the most? None, I'm actually looking back at the vast DS and 3DS libraries and trying to cover all of them. No time to look ahead :P

What model of the system do you have?

Black OG Model

How many games do you have for it?

About 10 overall.

What is your favorite game on the system?

Pokemon Y

What accessories do you own for it?

None, but will possibly pick up the circle pad at some point

What game are you looking forward to the most?

Monster Hunter 4 (If it gets localized) or new SSB

Overall I would go as far to say that the 3DS is one of the best consoles I have owned. Games that I own give plenty of variety and also as a bit of a retro nut so love the Virtual Console. 3DS is likely to be my most played console this generation if Nintendo keep pushing out the quality games.

the games are brilliant. at the mo i am still playing animal crossing on a daily basis. i am looking forward to a link between worlds and bravely default (fair dues to square and NOE for getting it to europe for this year :D).

the hardware is shocking though by nintendos own very high standards with handhelds. im not talking horsepower here (its fine) but the build quality is poor, one nub was a big mistake when they knew MH was coming to the handheld and its not comfortable to hold. the stylus is in an awkward spot and the battery life is also very very poor.

i do like the 3D though but i think the tech behind it needs to be improved for it to really shine on a handheld. sadly itll probably be completely scrapped for their next handheld.

i hear the 3DS XL does fix and improve on a lot of these issues mind.

still if i didn't have one already it would be the platform i pick up before getting a wiiu, PS4 or X1. the games are brilliant.

  • What model of the system do you have?
  • How many games do you have for it?

  • What accessories do you own for it?
  • What game are you looking forward to the most?

Pikachu-themed 3DS XL

About two dozen.

Fire Emblem Awakening

Protective case, carrying case, a car charger, and a few extra stylis

A Link Between Worlds, Bravely Default, Yoshi's Island 3D, Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney, The Mega Man GB/GBC games,

---

The 3DS is by far my most-played piece of gaming hardware this year with the PS3 being a tight second. The system definitely got off to a rough start but this year has definitely been it's year. So far, I like it better than the DS and I can only hope that Nintendo keeps games rolling for the handheld.

What model of the system do you have?

Black OG Launch Model

How many games do you have for it?

4 3DS Download Games, 14 NES games, 4 Gameboy Games, 10 GBA games, 5 Demos, 14 DSi Games plus I think 3 more on the SD Card, and that Face Raiders App game that I don't really consider a game and I think around 23 Retail games.

Totaling up to around 78 games playable on my 3DS system. Not Counting DS games.

What is your favorite game on the system?

Really Rockin' it out with Pokemon Y at the Moment.

What accessories do you own for it?

  1. The Charge Cradle that I hardly use
  2. The Stand that came with Kid Icarus
  3. The Circle Pad Pro
  4. and the Green Zelda 3DS Cover

What game are you looking forward to the most?

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

By Far the 3DS is the MUST own system for the Next Generation. It's already seeing more play than my current systems.

-Originally Turquoise Blue 3DS, bought a Red Pokemon X and Y 3DS XL.

-Pokemon Soul Silver, Mario Kart 7, Kid Icarus Uprising, 3DS Ambassador games, Super Mario 3D World, Pokemon White, Pokemon Black 2, Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, Virtue's Last Reward, Etrian Odyssey 4, SMT 4, Fire Emblem Awakening, Pokemon Y

-Pokemon Y, eaisly

- Nyko Power-Pak for OG 3DS, now with my sister, stand with Kid Icarus, Mario 3DS cover (rendered useless now thanks to the power pak), screen protectors, and backup stylus

- Bravely Default, Theatrhythm: FF 2

I would absolutely recommend the system. It is the best 200 bucks I have ever spent, and it is a lifesaver when I am taking public transit or on the road.

  • How many games do you have for it? 5
  • What is your favorite game on the system? Pokemon Y Version

My Opinion: I think the 3DS is limiting it's games atm, I've noticed some input lag on the games i've enjoyed the most on the system ( monster hunter ultimate, RE:R, and Pokemon Y ) now i think the saddest thing of them all is when pokemon lags a lot because of the framerate ( triple battles )... this is incredibly sad.. being a " 3DS " it doesn't play 3D games that well.... it's just a converter of 2D games into a "3D" atmosphere.

3DS is by far the best current gen system on the market. Any well-rounded gamer should certainly pick one up. Even if you don't like the idea of playing on a handheld there are plenty of unique experiences you won't find on any other system.

  • Have a Red OG 3DS and a Red 3DS XL. Thinking about nabbing the Link Between Worlds bundle as well.
  • Quite a few, Pokemon Y, Fire Emblem Awakening, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 7, Ocarina of Time, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor Overclocked Tales of the Abyss, Final Fantasy Theatrhythm, Professor Layton, Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons/Link's Awakening
  • Final Fantasy Theatrhythm
  • Just a carrying case
  • Bravely Default. Most promising looking game of 2014

I have a red XL and Fire Emblem Awakening is by far the best game I've played on it.

I'm hoping Zelda: A Link Between Worlds turns out good and is something I enjoy to play.

I have a blue 3ds xl. Only have Pokemon X, New Super Mario Bros. 2, and Shin Megami Tensei 4. Oh and Metroid. I'm planning on getting a bunch more games and I'm looking forward to some but Pokemon X has been sucking up all my time.

Pokemon X is easily my favorite game but I haven't spent enough time with SMT4. It seems really great.

I'm most looking forward to the zelda game.

My main problems with the system are that it only has one circle pad and that the d pad starts to hurt my thumb if I use it for too long.

What model of the system do you have? Original Flame Red w/ Mario 3D Land.

How many games do you have for it? About 04 though I intend on buying about 5 more games excluding Digital Copies

What is your favorite game on the system? So far Pokémon X is by far the best.

What accessories do you own for it? None.

What game are you looking forward to the most? Definitely Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney.

Well for me the 3DS is a common Ds with better titles, i only say that because i don't ever use the 3D, it gives me a huge headache, although i love most games and i don't really mind playing 3D titles without the 3D vision.

I have the ruby red 3DS, it's very nice looking.

I have about 5 games for it (a small number, I know).

My favorite game has to be "Project X Zone". One of the greatest crossover games I have ever played.

No accessories here, besides the stylus.

I don't know, I have to browse the pending releases.

Great console. I already think its better than the DS. My only gripe is the design of the console. It could have been designed better--that goes for both clamshell designs.

Also, if you would like to, please answer the following questions:

  • What model of the system do you have? - Had teal 3DS, sold it after buying blue XL.
  • How many games do you have for it? - 30 retail, not including nes/3ds remakes.
  • What is your favorite game on the system? - Fire Emblem was like sweet sweet crack. Love Pokemon X though, and Etrian Untold.
  • What accessories do you own for it? - None.
  • What game are you looking forward to the most? - Bravely Default. I will buy anything almost anything Atlus or RPG.

  • I bought the White XL bundle with Mario Kart 7. Was really disappointed it didn't come with a charger though. I still can't wrap my head around that decision.
  • 6 on cartridge and 3 digital ones. I got MK7 pre-installed and got a free copy of Super Mario 3D Land. I also bought Ace Attorney because there was no cartridge version, otherwise I will always buy them on cartridge because it's 10 euro or more cheaper than the eshop...
  • Hard to choose one: Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country and Ace Attorney are all amazing games
  • A charger :p
  • I just bought A Link Between World but I don't have the time to play it yet. So I'm looking forward to getting around to it. As for upcoming games: Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney definitely ! Was so happy when that and AA: Dual Destinies were announced for the West.
