Nintendo and Sony were wise to go with actual 'motion' controllers

Motion controls without an actual controller are never gonna work. How are you going to play side scrollers, fps, or third person action games? How are you going to walk across a huge level when you only have four feet of room to move in your basement? Are you going to use an invisible gun for an fps or an invisible sword? Wiimote and Sony's control will use the rumble in the controller for feedback once you strike or shoot, what feedback do you get from swinging into the air? All I see from the videos are people flailing around. Technology looks nice for party games but I dont see many gaming applications.

ActicEdge is confuzzled by all the motion control threads :? Can we not have a sticky or atleast keep it all in one thread? Anyway, lets see what MS actually plans to use the camera for before speculating.

clap your hands to zoom in your weapon.

small jump to jump

and in order to shoot you need to yell "BAM BAM BAM" at your vision cam while making a gun out of your hand.

Did you even watch MS's conference? Their motion controls are way more advanced than Sony's and Nintendo's. Endless possibilities.

Having the physical device does give you a better sense of momentum when you are playing some of these games. But the motion sensor of MS is certainly interesting, but look at the games that came out for the Eye-Toy. It was limited to being mainly party type games a few others took use of it, Lemmings and the like. But the MS one, so far they too only seemed to show "Party" type games in the demos. But like the Balance board of the Wii, it will certainly provide a place in the world of gaming.

But I want to see more with all of them, on how, proper games not party games will perform with this.

I wonder if the Natal system is accurate enough to handle a "virtual analog stick"? (eg. you move your thumb around as if manipulating the stick on a controller) :?

indeed, microsoft's idea wasn't executable in most games that serious gamers would want to play. besides, who want to actully excercise and move yourself too much while gaming? with sony's controllers for example looks like you don't have to actully run or anything like that, you can just sit in front of the screen and use it just fine, moving your hands is fine, but more than that? even standing up while gaming is asking for way too much.

Might as well just have an actual joystick if they are going to do something like that.

Eh, you could make it so that the player controls the virtual stick and buttons with one hand, and holds the other hand out as if holding a gun. If that doesn't work, then maybe a hybrid solution.... one hand holds an optional nunchuk-like controller (or just one side of a standard 360 controller), and the other is pure motion.

Mr_Nordquist

Ugggghhh, you remind me of a younger me a year ago saying LittleBigPlanet has endless possibilities. God, I was stupid.

To the point, many people have already called out some pretty heavy limitations. The most common one many have called out is the fact that there's no way it's going to be able to pick up small motions like pulling the trigger of a gun.

Sony may be less impressive on a technical side but it's pretty clear that what you see is what you get whilst I'm very skeptical of how effective this control scheme will really be. THIS would have made me call out so much more BS if it wasn't for the fact that they slapped a big "Product vision: actual features and functionality may vary" at the beginning. Which many people seemed to have missed and believe half of the crap in there is actually part of Natal.

Not heard about the new Halo? "You got a big pack with it, 2 grenades balls, and 10 mock up weapons that you can use, you switch weapons just by holding them and the amazing Nutella technology recognises what they are! You can even reload them at home, no longer will firefights be fair, drop your ammo? Too bad, threw your grenade ball at the tv? Gotta go pick it up now. It's amazing and we just know you'll love it! And coming this falls, 2 electrodes to stick to your nuts, you too can feel what Master Chef feels when his energy shields go down, you'll never want to die again!"

Well done, have a gold star, whilst you're at it you may also want to include that pathetic Wii clone "Tech" demo Sony showed in your sig. Might balace things out a bit and make you look less bovine ;)

I prefer to sit on my ass and move the minimum amount possible while gaming. So pretty much this means I dislike motion controllers.

Yeah I agree, I don't plan to use the motion controller much on the ps3, but ...if they made a gladiator game that would be SWEET
