In spite of Nintendo's repeated assertions to the contrary, head honcho Satoru Iwata has confirmed to Mercury News that the Wii U, its upcoming console, and successor to the Wii, will in fact be 3D enabled, fully capable of outputting images in stereoscopic 3D.

"If you are going to connect Wii U with a home TV capable of displaying 3D images, technologically, yes, it is going to be possible, but that's not the area we are focusing on," he said.

"When it comes to the home console, it depends upon the availability of 3D TV sets at home, which, unfortunately, is not expanding enough. And rather than pouring a lot of energy into that kind of area, with the Wii U we'd like to focus more on each Wii U owner being able to have an equal opportunity to enjoy it."

So, it appears that like the Xbox 360, it will be fully capable of 3D gaming, but that this particular feature won't get a push.Alsolike the Xbox 360.

If this system resembles the Xbox 360 in other ways too, then it could be the best Nintendo console in a very long time.GamingBolt

Personally, I don't think it's as big of a surprise as people are making it out to be. After all, the Gamecube and the Wii were both 3D enabled, so it only makes sense that the Wii U would be too, right?

EDIT: Source

Meh... it's probably not going to be supported probably until late in the console's lifespan when 3D tvs are the norm. I know we have a handful of games this gen (mostly on PS3) that are 3D enabled, but it's likely this stuff will take another 5 or so years to happen more often.

I know. So far, gaming systems that have supported 3D include, but are not limited to, the NES, Virtual Boy, Master System, Gamecube, 3DS, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, and of course the PC. Damn.

I've yet to see a console game in 3D, maybe I'll splurge on my next TV and see what it's all about.

How does 3d work with the Gamecube or the Wii?Never heard of that.

Both are theoretically capable of outputting stereoscopic 3D imagery. However, Nintendo never made a single game that ever did that on either system, except for Luigi's Mansion on the Gamecube, and that feature was ultimately removed. I am unclear as to how exactly it works, but here is an article detailing the Gamecube's 3D. I imagine the Wii's 3D works in a similar way too: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98097-Nintendo-Built-3D-Into-the-Gamecube

Ha, I wouldn't say they copied 3D from anybody. It's just a feature they happen to be using too. Although if a fanboy wanted to argue that Sony 'stole' 3D from Nintendo, they could, and I'm not even talking about the Virtual Boy. As it turns out, the Gamecube was fully 3D compatible: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98097-Nintendo-Built-3D-Into-the-Gamecube

Interesting.
I would've played Luigi's Mansion in 3d :P,but the 2nd one is coming to the 3DS,so there's that.

Nintendo really couldn't disable 3D anyway. They would've had to cut out 120hz support from the HDMI port, which they couldn't do. It'd be up to developers to make it 3D and Nintendo wouldn't have control over that. Heck, this was even possible on the Gamecube. Possible on anything really. Look at Crysis 2. The 360 didn't have 3D support and it's using an old HDMI revision, yet they still got it working. Not to mention Wii games have already been hacked for Nvidia 3D support for a few years now :P

The console makersreally can't hold developers back from using 3D. It's up to the developer on how to implement it as there are multiple ways. It's just letting them know it does work with modern 3DTVs really.

Pretty much. Sony has a reason to push it. They make 3DTVs. MS and Nintendo have no reason.

IMHO, no, but it's the cool thing to do nowadays. For Sony in particular, they only pump 3d because they also sell 3D TVs. So they are kinda doing themselves (and other TV makers) a favor by increasing the availability of 3D content in the market. via games.

Having said all that though, 3D is a gmmick and will always be a gimmick to me, so I can care less if the Wiiu has it. I don't even watch movies in 3D because it makes my head hurt.

Really? It appears just fine for me, in fact I think Ocarina of Time makes the best case for 3D gaming yet. You might want to turn the 3D down to ~45%.

Agreed. 3D gaming is probably the smallest minority due to 3DTVs being insanely expensive, and nVidia practically monopolized 3D PC gaming.

I just don't even feel like bothering with 3d, having to adjust it to find the sweet spot, and whenever I move I see ghosting. besides that, I don't like using 3d because it drains the battery faster.

I got the 3ds for the amazing upcoming library, tbh 3d wasn't even considered for my purchase :P

Ha, okay :P I love the 3D effect. It sort of hurts my eyes sometimes, but when it works, it is incredible. But you're right though, the 3DS will ultimately be defined by its games, and not its tech. Something that all Vita fanboys seem to be forgetting is true for all systems ;) (this was a not so subtle jab at the most recent thread on this subject :P)

I'm unfamiliar with the tech, so I must ask: how do you deduce that?

Because Sony has locked down the technology to poop out 3D in 720p via HDMI 1.3. It renders two normal resolution frames for every one you percieve. I don't really know how they pulled it off, but they did it, and they did it using HDMI 1.3 which has lower bandwidth than the usual 1.4 3D standard.

The Xbox 360, on the other hand, has to halve the resolution in order to produce 3D via HDMI 1.3, resulting in 360p images. The article stated that the Wii U approach to 3D would be similar to the 360's approach, which I assume means the 3D will be inferior to the current PS3 method in terms of resolution. I may be wrong, but I have that sinking feeling that Sony and only Sony are going to really treat 3D with any respect in the years to come. But hey, maybe the next Xbox will support HDMI 1.4.

Didn't know the 360 was a brand new system where they are releasing updates that force Pseudo 3d on you...Where as the Wii u is a brand new system that will likely follow the current fad of catering to Pseudo 3d...

Oh, I think the article was referring to Nintendo's approach to 3D for the Wii U being similar to how Microsoft approached 3D for the Xbox 360, as opposed to the tech behind it all. I'm pretty sure that the Wii U, which is after all more powerful than the HD twins (even if it isn't so by much) will be able to pull 3D off in 720p.

[QUOTE="charizard1605"] Really? It appears just fine for me, in fact I think Ocarina of Time makes the best case for 3D gaming yet. You might want to turn the 3D down to ~45%.charizard1605

I set it up to 100% :P before that I tried a lot of different settings and I still see ghosting, and get headaches.

Something that all Vita fanboys seem to be forgetting is true for all systems ;) (this was a not so subtle jab at the most recent thread on this subject :P)

there's about 8 games that will be day 1 buys for me, Paper mario alone was enough for me to buy it :o

and you're going to start a vita vs 3ds war :P

[QUOTE="WilliamRLBaker"][QUOTE="charizard1605"][QUOTE="WilliamRLBaker"]

another reason not to get a Wii u.

Huh? They specifically stated tat though the system can output 3D, they won't be pushing it at all. Like the Xbox 360, would you sell that too, since it also does 3D?

Didn't know the 360 was a brand new system where they are releasing updates that force Pseudo 3d on you...Where as the Wii u is a brand new system that will likely follow the current fad of catering to Pseudo 3d...

They said that the Wii U will NOT make a push for 3D, but that it has the capability. But sure, you need a reason to hate on every system that isn't the Xbox 360, so go ahead.

[QUOTE="charizard1605"] I'm unfamiliar with the tech, so I must ask: how do you deduce that?charizard1605

Because Sony has locked down the technology to poop out 3D in 720p. It renders two normal resolution frames for every one you percieve. I don't really know how they pulled it off, but they did it, and they did it using HDMI 1.3 which has lower bandwidth than the usual 1.4 standard. The Xbox 360, on the other hand, has to halve the resolution in order to produce 3D via HDMI 1.3, resulting in 360p images. As a 3D enthusiast, I hope you are right. But I am very, very skeptical. Nintendo loves to make their consoles on the cheap.

Yep, there's quite a few games I want day one too. Mario, Mario Kart, Star Fox, Metal Gear Solid, Kid Icarus and Paper Mario to name a few. The library is incredible indeed. And I didn't start the war, I just fired the latest round of volleys :P

Well, yes, Nintendo *does* like to gimp out on some features. Like no media playback in 2011? :? Anyway, let's wait on details for this. Hopefully, the 3D on this will be top of the line, even if it remains a largely underutilized feature. Btw, as a 3D enthusiast, what's your take on the 3DS?

So..much...3D.

Heil68

Really? Spending so much just to see what it's like? Wow that's a big move, i won't be touching 3D until i experience it myself, i much prefer the type with glasses that uses technical trickery rather than optical trickery(the headache one).
