Nintendo DS all set to become highest selling system of all time

The Nintendo DS's total sales are 144 million units sold worldwide. This literally puts it within kissing distance of the Playstation 2,which stands at 147 million units sold worldwide.

My question is, the DS will obviously take the crown from the PS2. How long do you think it'll take to do so, however?

depends. if they decide to discontinue it once 3ds is released, its chances are very slim, but if they dont for a good few months then it might get there.

Yeah, I could imagine the 3DS outselling it one day. Nothing else at this stage (that is announced) will outsell the DS.

My hats off to the DS. It's been a great generation. I still remember the day I got my launch DS :)

The PS2 had one version?

And didn't the PS2 break often? Meaning people had to go through more than one last generation?

I know I had to fix mine MANY times.

there were actually multiple PS2 versions. I predict the DS to overtake it sometime this year. Their only a few million behind and sales are still good, Nintendo wont discontinue the DS when it's still selling well. I bet between 10 and 15 million DS's will sell this year.

Clearly, it will outsell the PS2 sometime this year. I don't see a system going from selling 22.5 million one year to 3 million the following year, even if its replaced by a new model in the middle of said year and as I don't see the PS1 hitting more than a million in sales this year, I'd say its in the bag. It might even outsell it by the time of the 3DS launch, though we won't know if it did for awhile.

The PS1 and Saturn were released in 1994. I think I remember reading somewhere the best selling console of 1995 was the Super Nintendo.Also, the Super Nintendo received a hardware redesign in 1997, a year AFTER the N64 had launched. Nintendo won't abandon a successful existing platform, that's a lesson everyone learned when Sega killed the Genesis to focus on the Saturn. Game Boy Micro was released within two months of the DS and the DSi LL was released within weeks of the 3DS announcement. They cut the Gamecube off because it wasn't as successful and the Wii was backward compatible anyways.

How in the world does that matter? They all play the same games. I doubt there is one person who isn't a collector that bought all four, maybe a DS and DS Lite, or a DS and DSi, but I no no-one who bought a DS, DS lite, DSi, and DSi XL.

The PS3 is up to 11 SKUs at this point. Does that mean instead of selling 50 million the PS3 has only sold 4.5 million?Wow Sony, you really failed hard this generation.

This thread is about hardware sold. And there is no 'best' platform. It's all a matter of opinion.

Not really. There are numerous operating systems for the PC that currently have no method of playing most PC games.

Only when certain hardware combines with certain software can everything be played on a PC. Even then I doubt you could get EVERY PC game to play on any one setup. That's why games have those stickers on the side listing everything you should have in order to play them. Occasionally you can get around some of that with unpredicted software solutions like Linux + Wine, but even that most common of solutions to get around the Windows requirement is far from perfect.

and yea nintendo wont drop support immidiatelly , look at gb and gba ,

heck gba had 2 new models right before dslite came -gbmicro 2006 dslite 2006 gbasp mach 2 2006

also driv3r=2005 release ds came in 2004 so i dont think nintendo and 3rd party will drop support to it , what if 3ds doesnt take off which i think it will but still , nintendo would have to scrap 3ds and put a better unit out if that happens not sayin it will cause i know it wont ,

the ds is a successful platform

as a result it will have 2 more years even after 3ds , of support cause not every one will have the money right off the bat to get a 3ds,

same for psp i dont think sony will cut its cord , until enough have transfered over to psp 2

even though psp failed to outsell nin tendo its still a success all this stuff about fighting for more systems sold means nothing as long as they make profit and what not

and i think sonys done that other wise sony would have pulled out

so ya both current handhelds will not drop immediatelly ,
