Im looking to get a hand held system, i figured it was time to update from my original GBA. I cant decide whether to go with the DS or PSP. Help please.
I love platformers, FPS, WRPG, and good games in general.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
umm i personally like DS is there any wrpg on handhelds?funsohng
Idk. There are seemingly hundreds of JRPGs on the DS and PSP though. which im fine with. Im somewhat interested in The World Ends With You, and The monsterhunter that just came out for the psp. But i like WRPGs better. Im also tempted to get a DS because of Scribblenauts, but then again, the PSP will have little big planet so....... I need more input. haha..
If you must get one of those, let it be a DS, because atleast it has backwards compatibility.NBSRDanHe has a GBA so it dosen't matter. Get a psp dude. Movies, music, photos, its graphics almost good as ps2. I have both, and its sorta hard but monster hunter just pwns. Psp dude.

OH yeah i forgot. Little big planet psp yeah! You need to get psp, or both. You should know the drill:
Make a listof games you want for each system and the one with most of them wins.
Personally, I'd go for the PSP... not the Go! though, I hate DD.
well look at how many good games are coming out for each.
DS has 23 A, AA, AAA games on gamespot this year, PSP has only 9 A, AA. and no AAA
on metacritic DS has 39 A, AA, AAA games this year and PSP has 11 A, AA
additionally DSi Ware has 3AAe, and 5Ae on metacritc, only 3 less A, AA, or AAA games this year than PSP.
Seriously. I'm not kidding. DSiware, which has been around for 90 days has nearly as many good games this year as the whole PSP.
But the fact that the DS is beating the PSP like a rag doll in terms of quality software doesn't matter if you want to buy PSP-centric titles like Syphon Filter, Loco Roco, Patapon, Socom. Those are some very good games. Definetly check out Loco Roco if you get a PSP.
Just don't get a PSP go. get a 2000 or 3000 PSP for $170 and buy a 16GB mem stick for $35 online.
After playing the Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, and finally the DS I really didn't see much improvements graphical to them, so when I bought the PSP my eyes literial burnt out of their sockets.
Go get the PSP, you won't regret it. I mean, what handheld can you get all of the good Spyro Games, FF7/Crisis Core, God of War, Resistance, and more in steller graphics?
Sounds like PSP, there are some more action based RPGs on the platform (like Crisis Core), and shooters are pretty abundant, like Resistance Retribution, and MGS (sorta of like a shooter), and platformers are better on DS, but there some on PSP like Ratchet and Clank. The DS is probably superior, but considering your tastes, PSP sounds like your best bet.enterawesome
Yea there are a lot better shooters on PSP but there are so many RPGs on DS, so much more than PSP, and so many more quality ones.
Crisic Core was cool, but DS has RPGs, and SRPGs on lock down as far as quality and quantity (damn you Jagged Alliance for sucking!)
If you (the TC) get a DS check out platformers like NSMB, Kirby, or Yoshi's Island, but if you get PSP check out Loco Roco 1 & 2, Ratchet: SM, and Secret Agent Clank.

I agree, the DS DOES have the best RPG's in the form of FF4, The World Ends With You, and Chrono Trigger.
It's a shame the PSP doesn't have more.
Easy choice.
If you want lots of great games and variety you choose the DS.
If you don't then you go with the PSP.

Call me whatever you want, but to me Crisis Core alone grants you a really nice experience with the PSP, such an awesome game and I'm not one of those FFVII freaks. The game is made out of pure win and even if you know what happens in the end, you can't help to be touched by the ending.
IMO of course.
Also, I don't know if you've tried Patapon... excellent twist for a rythm game.

I haven't EVER even played FF7, I just picked up Crisis Core because I heard it was a good RPG. And MAN was it good :D
I'm in a pretty interesting position, to have played Crisis Core then FF7, in chronological :P

They have the Rayman games on the PS Clas sics for the PSP :P
The Playstation versions are inferior to the other versions. That's what makes me sad because I actually saw them while scrolling through the ****cs on my PSP, and almost bought them, and decide I'd rather just play my Dreamcast version.

Ah well, that sucks man :( Sorry to hear that. I never played them, are they worth getting just to experience them? Or are they pretty dated and don't stand up?

Did you see my list, The full version of Final Fantasy 7, is better than ff4, and FF anthology and origins will probably be on psn soon anyway due to the success of ff7... FF crissi core, FF tactcis war of the lion, FF disidia , FF13 agito, Parasite eve 3, Kingdom hearts, Suikoden 1 and 2, Legend of heoros 1,2,3, Crimson Gem Saga, Phantasy star portable, Dungeon siege, Dungeon maker 1 and 2, dungeon explorer, D and D tactics, tales of the world , vahalla knights 1 and 2, jeanne d'arc, valkerie profile, wild arms, wild arms 2, star ocean , star ocean 2.... enough rpgs for you? and that's not all of them.... look at my lsit for other genres.... I am replaying crisis core again right now!! I am on the part right after Zak becomes first class, and I get access to materia fusion....I love this game so addictive and all the missions there are tons of them to do outside of the main story is great...perfect for loot grabs as you get some of the best materia and items from those missions. Love this game!!!![QUOTE="Mr_Nordquist"]

Rayman 2 on the N64, DC, PS2, or PC = Good
Not on the Playstation.
I still play it. It's one of the best games ever made. I personally think the Dreamcast version is the best.

I have rayman 2 on the psn as I got most of them on psn and playing it on the psp isn't bad at all as it makes the graphics so much better than on my hd tv...The game is fun, first time I've played it, as I didn't even know it existed back in my ps1 days. The DS has far better games than the PSP. It is the superior gaming handheld. The PSP comes with a bunch of extra features, but hey: if you want to watch movies, listen to music, and store photos that badly, go get an iPod.
I guess it all depends on what you want. The PSP's MO seems to be to offer a true console experience on the go, which is why most of the most popular games are practically identical to their console counterparts and not a whole lot of games that actually identifyit as a true stand-alone system.
The DS, on the other hand, has a very strong library of games that are specifically designed with the system's strengths and weaknesses in mind. There are a lot of games that technically could be done on other systems, but probably wouldn't come off as well. The DS doesn't have the identity crisis that the PSP has. It also has a stronger focus towards RPGs and strategy games . . . not so much action (although there are some great titles in this genre, as well).
Personally, I have both, and I'm a happier man for it. But I only have 11 PSP games (of which only three are truly original - the others are either direct ports, remakes, or spin-offs from existing console games) whereas I have 40 DS games (most of which offer a genuinely unique experience).
If you want a better variety of games, get the DS.
If you want an ok selection of games along with multimedia features, get the psp.
As an owner of both, I enjoy both of them equally. I got the DS first, so I'm a bit biased (there is an unbelievable amount of good games for it), 36 DS games v. my 9 psp games. But I've been surprised by the psp - over 300 hours in monster hunter, hundreds of hours in FFT: WotL and Dissidia. and of course the graphics are 3x better, but the DS has a vastly superior online system (ironic, huh?)
If you didn't have a ps2, then you'd probably like the psp; no good fps (blame the nub), great rpgs, Monster Hunter, Dissidia for fighters...as you can see my list is a bit low
If you like variety, get a DS; Metroid Prime Hunters for a godly fps, Jump Ultimate Stars for the best fighter, Zelda: PH for the best adventure, Ouendan/EBA for rhythm, any of the 3 castlevanias for action, and countless great rpgs
The jump from GBA to DS is like the jump from SNES to N64. (Suppose to be actually it is suppose to be the jump from PS1 to N64) GBA was 32 Bit because they had RE2 running on the GBA. DS is 64 Bit like the N64. But for some reason they made GBA games ports of 16 Bit games or games with 16 Bit graphics. On the DS alot of people use 2D Graphics but their are some games that look like N64 games Graphically. After playing the Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, and finally the DS I really didn't see much improvements graphical to them, so when I bought the PSP my eyes literial burnt out of their sockets.

Also on topic it depends on what games you like I'm tempted myself to buy a PSP I played some games on it and I liked it. I also have a DS and like the games on it.
Edit* Here's a link to RE2 running on the GBA

What some how 6 final fantasy games (not crystal chronical kiddie games) are "Nerd" games? The guy said there weren't many rpgs for the psp , I resopned with a list of a few... and you call these Nerd games? Final Fantasy 7 is a classic, but the ds rpgs aren't "nerd" games? how old are you son. Didn't geralizations and stereotypes for videogames disapear in the 90's? I am 30 years old and enjoy the rpgs from both..... But to call psp rpgs "nerd" games but not the ds is fanboyish and immature. Obviously you didn't take a look at my other list that included other genres... but than again you probably consider MEtal Gear and Syphon filter, 3 full featured GTA games , God of war, Killzone liberation, Patapon, etc etc... "Nerd" games too.... quetsion what games aren't "nerd" games to you? Pokemon? mario sunshine lets be friends edition? Baby Partyz? Nintendogiez? Come on , these games are childish rubbish.....both the ds and the psp have tons of rpgs.....i get sick and tired of people bashing the psp of its' library when it is filled with classics and original masterpieces.[QUOTE="Midnightshade29"][QUOTE="millwrought"]

I'd buy the DS first (as I've done) and get the PSP second (which I'll do after I fix my car). I can't decide on what model though...
