Just a question. In another current topic we're discussing a "rumor" that has been going around for years.

I've heard so many times before, from so many people, that Nintendo actually pulled more profit from the Gamecube than Sony did from the PS2. I know it sounds strange, but I've just heard it so much and nobody ever seems to argue against it.

So is it true? Really, just curious. I'd just like to know either way.

I don't know about GCN and PS2 specifics, but I believe it's true, Nintendo made more money overall than Sony in the Gamecube era which of course also includes GBA.

Impossible to tell but GBA+GCN > PS2 in terms of profit.

Well counting handhelds of course they beat everyone. Thats their real cashcow that is a much bigger money generator than their consoles ever were. :P

I just want to know if the GC did well on its own in comparison to the PS2.

Without the GBA Nintendo would have been in certain trouble.

I actually thought about that as well but was wondering on the GC alone. That also includes how most ppl forgot entirely about the DS when it comes to this.

Console wars are the major things to talk about here, but the handhelds were way more effective on the market.

Nintendo made more profit in the Gamecube ERA than Sony with the PS2, but do remember Nintendo had the Gameboy Advance and Pokemon as well.

I knew I was on the losing side of the argument for GC passing the PS2 on its own, but I thought it was an interesting side to go on. :P

This does make a lot of sense, and is pretty much a given.

I believe Sony was pulling profit from the PS2 Slim, which likely sold more units than the entire run of the GC. Hard to say if neither company coughs up their numbers.

the only reason that Nintendo was able to go through last gen alive was because of the Gameboy. The reason the Wii was so underpowered was because they had no money. But now that they know that they can get away with it they came with another underpowered console, the Wii U, even though they have a crap ton of money now.

I think the Gamecube hardware was super profitable, compared to the PS2, which was sold at a loss for a very long time, and the Gamecube hardware had some mad attach rates (among the highest of all time, I think, every system had like 18 games attached with it), so Nintendo was pulling incredible numbers even back then. But considering just the sheer numbers backing the PS2, I would not even for a second argue that it was more successful than that, it can't have been. Nintendo, though, was, so yeah, that's all we'll ever know :P

or maybe they went with another underpowered console because it sold more and gave them a crapton of money?

I couldn't find a link but if I can remember correctly then Nintendo made profit off the GameCube. However, they were not making a profit until they stopped production on the console long before the Sixth Generation of Consoles passed.

At least, that's what I remember hearing. I could be very wrong.

With the exception of the small period of time when Nintendo cut the price to $99, Nintendo sold the Gamecube with profit on every unit. Sony did not do the same with the PS2.

Couple the profit from the Gamecube with the success of the GBA, Nintendo pretty much got all of the profit to be made from that generation:

I don't think there has ever been a time when Nintendo was not the most successful game company.

The truth is, a lot of the time, Nintendos main profits have been coming from handhelds (up until the Wii) and since they display combined profits, it looks much more impressive than others.

I highly doubt the GC on it's own pulled more profit. It sold maybe 1/4 the amount of the PS2 and had a fraction of the amount of games the PS2 had.
