Ok, for the record, I bashed Wii a LOT. That being said, I watched every conference, and Nintendo restored my faith in their brands, and I CAN'T wait for 3DS!!! That being said, their statement about glasses being a limitation of 3D gaming is a true statement imo.

I was lucky to test out 3D at a Sony exhibit back in April. To say the least, it was underwhelming, and the glasses didn't do much either. I got to try out some Killzone 2 stuff as well as watch a few National Geographics shows.

Anyone agree with Nintendo that 3D gaming with glasses is ridiculous. Heck, even GI's review of batman Arkham Asylum said they almost prefered the regular version.

It's true. I think Sony are way off base thinking any significant number of people are going to buy 3D TVs and sit at home wearing special glasses.

The glasses are a bit of an odd touch, a touch that limits the uses of a tv as well as only the people with glasses on can enjoy the game, those without acutally just see a more blurry picture..

eh, considering how popular 3D movies have been, I don't think that would be a huge stretch

I think the biggest problem is the glasses cost so much as well... I am not paying $150+ dollars for a single pair of those hideous looking glasses.

Different cost of entry. Do you like 3D movies enough to put down a couple grand for them, or just enough to put down a few extra dollars for specific features.

Wow that expensive for you? It's something like £10 with glasses that you can keep and use for other films here in the UK. It's less expensive that the stupid prices for drinks at the Cineworld near me

I don't really know, I'm not usually paying for them. I honestly just made up a number. :P

I do know for a fact that 3D TV's are currently running for thousands of dollars.

Its the TV's. The reason I cant see 3D gaming taking off for PS3 is the expense of the TV's, but I wont be bitter if it pays off for them... godspeed, I say.

The only problem I forsee with the 3DS (this is only rumor on my end, though), is that the "3D" aspect of the 3DS will only allow for depth. There really isn't anything "popping" out of the screen, hence the need for 3D glasses. Once again though, only rumor on my end.

And a 3.5 inch screen with faux 3D isn't "lame"? Does anyone remember the price of an HDTV in 2003? I think a 40" display that couldn't produce 2.1 million pixels on screen was around 8,000 dollars. I wonder what they cost in 1998. In 3 years the price will go down, and a lot of people will start to buy digital 3D technology for their private use.

My problem with 3D gaming on the TV, or 3D on the TV period, without glasses is that you have to keep your head level. When I'm laying on the couch my head is definately not level. I don't know how well 3D without glasses would work on a TV for me because I'm often looking at the TV with my head resting against the arm of the couch.

That said, I don't care for 3D with glasses, either. I'm waiting for the holodeck!

This is false but it seems to be spreading.

"We had a look at several demonstrations, including a selection of Nintendo characters (think Smash Bros. trophies) in different settings. The Pikmin blended into the grass, Yoshi's nose seemingly protruded from the screen and black particles surrounded Link, almost appearing to float in front of the top screen."

From Joystiq's hands-on. Other previews say much the same thing.

I'm betting it'll be only to a certain extend. Find it hard to believe those effects will make me drop the 3DS as a result of a nice pop out. :P

It's not a holodeck no.

It's all hearsay, i'm not at E3.
I just know that there is pop up, probably not much because the screen is small, but the widescreen can really enhance the amount of depth and pop up it does, so that's a really smart move from them.

$12-$15 to go see a 3D movie in the theatre is not a big deal. Dropping 3 grand on a 3D TV, wearing PROPRIETARY 3D glasses with a battery right next to your brain, having radio waves shot directly at your head, having to drop an extra $200 EACH for glasses for other people who want to watch or join in, and the reported headaches after 20 minutes? Those are kind of a big deal...

3D at home has NOT been thought through very well.

It's not lame at all. If you don't like it, don't use that feature. There are a lot of people who watch 3D Movies and don't mind wearing glasses. It might be early for Sony to add this 3D functionality to PS3s because of the fairly high cost, but it isn't like they made us pay for this. People will complain about anything in SW...

See my last post, particularly the part about proprietary glasses and headaches...

svetzenlether

And you don't think they'll come up with better tech as the years go by? 3D TVs may still require proprietary glasses, but they could make it so it isn't headache inducing as you claim. The only real problem with Sony adding 3D to games is that it's too early for most people. It's still a free feature, so who cares?

The glasses allow you to see the 3D. So if you want 3D you will have to wear glasses. Like Sunglasses allow you to see better in sunny conditions. ...Is the real concern of glasses is they don't look cool? pfft okay

I never get headaches from 3D. I believe it only happens to certain people with motion sickness issues.

And furthermore, theres nothing wrong with proprietary glasses. If I buy a Sony 3DTV, I will buy Sony glasses. Problem solved.

hmmmm, way off base? Have you seen the boxoffice for all these 3D movies? People are paying MORE to watch these movies with these so called "ridiculous glasses". I would definetly agree with you that it is way off base to expect anything if it failed in the theater but it didn't. People have a choice to see it in 2D or 3D and a significant amount of people are watching it with glasses. This is what everyone is basing their numbers on. I've also seen a demo of football games with 3D (yes wearing glasses), it was amazing. I'm telling you all you people saying this is already a failure are looking EXACTLY like those that said Blu-ray was going to be a failure.......didn't people say it was goign to be laser disc within a year or two?

I'll wait until Sharp releases a glasses free 3DTV and until the price drops under $1000, in which it may take years from now.

The problem with no-glasses 3DTVs is that the 3D effects only work if you are standing directly in front of the screen at a particular distance. This is no problem for a handheld device like the 3DS, but for a TV where several people are watching from different angles and distances? I dont see it working out well.

While i agree that 3d games with glasses are lame so is releasing the same IP for the last 15 years every year. But then again thats what people wan't, maybe some change ups. Mario is fine they have changed the games enough to say that it has evolved somewhat but Zelda needs an overhaul.

The problem with no-glasses 3DTVs is that the 3D effects only work if you are standing directly in front of the screen at a particular distance. This is no problem for a handheld device like the 3DS, but for a TV where several people are watching from different angles and distances? I dont see it working out well.

The technology will get better over time, which is why I mention for years from now on. The 3DS is only the start to what we will expect from the future of gaming and watching movies. I'm sure Sharp is trying to find ways to view glasses free 3DTV in different angles.

the home 3d tv experience feedback has been fairly underwhelming from what i've read, with both darkened pictured and noticible flickering from the lcd shutters on the glasses... the ridiculous price tag and complete lack of content i presume for while, considering most are only just upgrading to hd, means it's a promising technology that isn't quite consumer ready. this is how all technologies go, but personally i'll wait out until glases-less 3d tv's comeout, or the tech gets cheaper and better.

I'll wait until Sharp releases a glasses free 3DTV and until the price drops under $1000, in which it may take years from now.

Maybe you are correct. It may take several years for that to be true, but for now, 3D gaming still needs alot of work and research before it becomes mainstream :)

microsoft (you read that right) has developed a 3dtv that works for 2 people, as it calculates were you are positioned and adjust the image. so it's only a matter of time until we see this getting better, and eventually 8+ will be able to watch it. it depends which gets better quicker.

When I can afford it. I am looking forward to 3D gaming myself. HarlockJC
I'm looking forward to 3d gaming as well but i'll probably wait till they can do it without the glasses. I know there's around tech to do that but right now you can only experience it at a small angle range. but just like with the first flat panels i think this will change.

exactly. i think that's when 3d will really take off. and these current 3dtv will be like laserdisc players became.
