I tried to buy a Nintendo Wii today, i called so many stores in and out of town. I have to keep calling out waiting for them to finally know they are getting a shipment then go there in the morning just to get one.

My question is are Wiis really selling that much or are they just not making very many? Some stores said they have not had a shipment in a month or more. Why is Nintendo not making enough Wiis to meet demand?

How many units over 4 million have they sold?

So I guess Nintendo is winning this race? Has any console ever sold this many units after launch? Has any other system ever been sold out after 4 months after launch?

They sold over 400,000 in January and 350,000 in February. They're not purposely creating shortages (at this point in the game, it would only hurt them, not help them). However, Nintendo has limited production capacity and they have to produce the wildly popular DSLite as well.

Well, I'm open to thoughts on why they would institute a false shortage. It just doesn't make sense to me. Demand is already through the roof. They're not building any more hype by having a shortage 4 months after the launch. If anything, I would say it would be squandering the initial launch hype which we already know was huge.

Yeah it is just wierd that 4 months later and you still have to get to the store with in hours after shipment. I mean no stores have them. All the stores I called said, we get them in the morning they are gone before noon. That is insane.

I am happy for Nintendo, kudos to them, but dang it I want my Wii NOW! My son is only here for a week so I will have to wait until summer now to play with him. Oh well, I will still enjoy the Wii either way, but I wanted him to share in the experience this week.

When the Wii passes the 360 in sales, which I'm certain it will, then it will be winning.

It's mostly because Nintendo is terrible at manufacturing hardware.

Yes, Nintendo is terrible at manufacturing hardware...they've only been doing it the longest... Also, you gotta recall that the Wii will eventually be coming out in numerous colors. I would hope that they have started making them by now, so that is going to cut into the maximum number of standard colored Wiis they can produce.

And you know this because you work for them on their production lines, correct? What? You don't? Then I think you should take a back seat.

It sells out because of word of mouth. That is the best advertising any product can have and I bet they are on it's way to ramping up production so we should see the results of that in a month or two.

You fail at logic. Why would Nintendo make a false shortage when demand is clearly very high? Oh.. you're a cow.. I see.

The 360 has sold about 10 million in about a year and a half. The Wii has sold about 5 million in about 5 months. Holiday season 2007 is when the Wii will officially be winning the console race.

If Nintendo was even somewhat competent at manufacturing, there would be enough. The Wii isn't a difficult machine to make. Any big name company would have already dumped out atleast double the amount of Wii's.

So Mcdonalds could have made at least twice as many Wiis as Nintendo?

How is the Wii that much easier to make than the PS3 or 360? You do realize that none of the complicated parts are produced by Sony/MS/Nintendo, correct? They merely collect the parts from IBM, NVidia, ATI, etc, assemble the pieces in a case, and off you go. The Wii's process is very similar to the other two. It's a matter of capacity, not complexity. Nintendo is a smaller company than Sony and MS and they likely have fewer assembly plants, assembly workers, etc.

They're putting out a million per month, along with probably several million DSes, as the demand for that is huge aswell. That's 33,000 a day, Wii-Mote included. You haven't a clue about how any of the production lines of any of these big companies run or work, so really you're not in a position to say how much they "should" be putting out or how much other companies would put out.

I also feel inclined to mention that Nintendo machines perpetually have the highest reliability. I could easily say that if MS and Sony weren't incompetent they could release a more reliable machine. However, saying that would be narrow minded of me because I don't know all the insight that was acquired during those machines' 5 year development cycle.

Well I wanted my Wii today lol. Oh well I should have anticipated this and started looking a couple weeks ago that way I coudl have had it by time my son got here. But I thought because it has been 4 months it should not be so hard to get one.
